I grew up in an unhappy home． I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible． Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved．

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs．

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me． But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like． They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever．

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes— it makes the place feel comfortable and warm— but this is my home, not a party house． I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy?

Dear Joan,

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now．

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere, you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with— or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy． You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time．

Be clear about the message you want to send． For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy． So please call before you come over．”

Many of us like cooking but never have much time for it. Helen Fry’s new book Quick Cooking has been specially written for busy people. It has over 1,000 recipes, from the famous Spanish gazpacho to Swedish smorgasbord. The book is well written and the photographs and drawings are clear. (They are like those in the excellent little Quick Dressmaking and Quick Gardening.) The book has a strong plastic cover. It is easy to find your way around it too. And busy people, notice this! Mrs. Fry tells you how much time you need in order to get each dish ready.

Quick Cooking has 4 parts, one for each season. This helps you to use fresh fruit and vegetables when they are cheaper—and, of course, better. There are a lot of exciting ideas from foreign countries, and most of the recipes are easy to follow. You take something simple like a chicken or some cheese, and make and unusual dish out of it. For example, there are no fewer than 40 recipes for eggs! Mrs. Fry does not plan complete meals for the “quick book”. The beginners will have to find out a lot of things for himself—or herself. But this ought not to be difficult with such a good book. I wanted to try many of the recipes as soon as I read them. For people with little spare time Helen Fry’s Quick Cooking is excellent value.

I have enjoyed my stay on your interesting unusual planet. I think I understand the life on earth now and I would like to give you my impressions.

First of all you live in boxes. Every morning you leave your big boxes and get into smaller boxes on wheels. All these small boxes race around and around, and finally stop to rest. You then leave these boxes on wheels and go to very large tall boxes.

After testing all days you get back in your little boxes and return to your big boxes. There you sit and stare at tiny glowing boxes with moving pictures on the front.

Only one thing puzzles me. One day, I went to a football game. A bunch of angry boys fought over a little round ball. Everyone yelled for them to stop but they kept on fighting. They were angry, I suppose, about being cooped up（被关起来）in boxes all day.
