Animals have been used, and sometimes abused(虐待), in movie-making since the early days of the industry. However, the American Humane Association has worked for many years to protect animals in films. And, the digital age might make animal actors unnecessary.

The new film “Dolphin Tale” tells about a dolphin that loses her tail because of an injury from a crab-trap. A doctor provides her with an artificial tail that saves her life. The film is based on a real event. And the star of the film, Winter, is a real dolphin that lost her tail. The American Humane Society worked with the movie’s makers to make sure Winter stayed safe and healthy during filming. The animal protection group does this for all animal actors in America.

A thick book of rules and guidelines tells Hollywood moviemakers how to treat animals. Karen Rosa leads the American Humane Society’s film and television group. He said, “Everything from the smallest insect to the largest mammal shall be protected. We believe that for the sake of entertainment, everybody should go home alive.

This was not always the policy in the early days of film. In 1939, a horse was forced off a mountain, falling to his death, in the movie “Jesse James.” The next year, guidelines were established to guarantee safe and healthy conditions for animals in movies.

A new film “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” tells about the creation of super intelligent apes through science. However, no real animals were among the performers. Computer generated imagery provided the chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans that movie goers see. Clare Richardson is the president of the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund. She says computer generated imagery should decrease the use of animals in the film industry. She praises movie makers for the use of computer-made animals.

One of my neighbors used to have a beautiful tree in her front yard. Her dad had planted it for her when it was nothing more than a twig and several years later it started to shoot towards the sky with amazing speed. Soon it blessed her with cooling shade in the summer and glorious, golden leaves in the fall.

When the two-day snowstorm struck our town, heavy snow fell on the tree’s branches that were still full of leaves. The weight split that lovely tree down the middle. It was so sad seeing half of it laying on the ground after the storm. When I talked to my neighbor later, she said that the damage had been too much and that the entire tree would have to be cut down. Thankfully she had saved a few saplings(树苗) from it that she hoped to replant in the future.

Still, it was a shock to drive by her house the other day and see nothing but a stump in her front yard. I missed that tree. I missed its beauty, its leaves shinning in the afternoon sun. I missed seeing its limbs reach towards the heavens. I thought that the stump would be a sad reminder of its loss for a long time to come. My wonderful neighbor, though, had another plan. When I drove by her home today I saw a tiny bird feeder sitting on that stump and a colorful songbird having its dinner. It was such an affirmation of life. It was such a joy to see. I could feel my heart smile.

Life by its very nature is a mixed bag. It hands us both beauty and tragedy, love and loss, pleasure and pain. What we do with it, however, is up to us. We can let it split us in two, or we can use even its hardest times to make our souls stronger and our hearts more loving. We can spend it complaining or we can use it to help others.

In a strange example of “art inspires life”,the self?drying jacket that Marty McFly wore in the movie,Back to the Future Ⅱ,has actually become a reality. A model has already been created and a Kickstarter campaign plans to raise funds for mass production.

The jackets, named SDJ?01,are classified as wearable tech, because of the inner air circulation(环流;循环) system that speeds the drying process from the inside out. Under normal circumstances, you can expect the jacket to dry in about 1-2 minutes after being exposed to rain or a spilled drink. If you jump into a pond to escape danger,it will probably take longer.

“Think of how quickly your clothes dry when you turn a standard fan on them. Now imagine how quickly breathable(透气的),water resistant(抗……的) material dries when exposed to concentrated, high?pressure air. In lab tests, our jacket consistently experienced noticeable drying effects after just 30 seconds, with the average time of about a minute to achieve a 90% drying effect,” explained Aaron Coleman, lead designer at Falyon Wearable Tech, which is producing the jacket.

“This is something that has been on my mind for years,” he said. He didn’t want it to be just a movie prop, but an actual usable jacket. “We wanted to follow the basic design of the jacket from the movie Back to the Future Ⅱ but update it a bit, adding more pockets for all the things people carry around these days.”

Eventually,Coleman and his team hit upon the perfect combination of water resistant material and high?pressure air circulation to achieve complete drying in just one minute. The outer layer is made of water resistant nylon, with insulation(绝缘材料) made of polyester fibre on the inside. It dries itself through a couple of so?called “air amplifiers(放大器)” attached to the sides, which force more air through the jacket.

According to the makers, the SDJ?01 is ideal for rainy days and spills, and the fans are perfect to cool off on days “when you’re just a little too warm, but it’s too cold to take off your jacket”.

1.How long does the SDJ?01 take to achieve a 90% drying effect,on average?

A. About 30 seconds.

B. About a minute.

C. About 1-2 minutes.

D. Longer than 2 minutes.

2.According to Aaron Coleman,in what way is the design different, compared with the jacket in Back to the Future Ⅱ?

A. The number of pockets.

B. The function of pockets.

C. The colour of pockets.

D. The shape of pockets.

3.What is the main achievement by Coleman and his team in developing the SDJ?01?

A. The noticeable drying effects of high pressure air on wet clothes.

B. The inner air circulation system can speed the drying process from the outside.

C. The perfect combination of water resistant material and high?pressure air circulation.

D. The various functions of water resistant materials during rainy days and spills.

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The ideal design of a self?drying jacket.

B. Marketing strategies for a self?drying jacket.

C. The development of a self?drying jacket.

D. A basic introduction to a self?drying jacket.
