This was my grandmother’s first Christmas without grandfather. When we reached her house, it did seem a little 36 without grandfather.
Grandfather had always said the Christmas 37 was the most important. So we set to work assembling(组装)the beautiful 38 tree that was stored in grandfather’s closet(储藏室). After we finished, we stepped back to 39 our work. It looked wonderful. But something was 40 .

“Let’s 44 in the closet where the tree was,” my sister Donna said. We 45 under beds and over shelves, inside and outside 46 we had exhausted every possibility. We could see Grandmother was 47 , although she tried not to show it. By now, it was 48 outside, and time for bed, as Santa would soon be here.
The next morning, my sisters and I 49 early to see what Santa had left under the tree. After breakfast, the family sat together to 50 presents. “The last gift is to Grandmother from Grandfather.” Father said, in a puzzled voice.
“From who?” There was 51 in my grandmother’s voice.
“I found that 52 in the closet when we got the tree down,” Mother explained.
My grandmother opened it. Her face lit up when she pulled out a(n) 53 golden star. There was a note attached. Her voice trembled(颤抖)as she read it:
Don’t be 54 with me, dear. I broke your star while putting away the tree. Thought it was time for a new one, I hope it brings you as much 55 as the first one. Merry Christmas.

It was a cold winter’s night when I stopped for gas on my way home from work. I was tired and had a slight 36 .
I worked in a 37 doctor’s office and this was one of those days when the unexpected happened, making the schedule run 38 than usual. It seemed I was going to be late 39 home and my husband, being the 40 person, would be ready to pronounce me late once again. Maybe 41 I hurried, I could still make it home.
I was heading inside to 42 for my gas when I noticed an older couple at the counter. I heard them asking for 43 to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that I had just 44 a few minutes ago.
The young man at the counter was trying to be 45 in explaining how to get there, with two other people making 46 . One of them was 47 trying to give them a whole different route back. It was then that I walked over to the couple and said, “Would you like to follow me to the 48 ?”
A look of 49 crossed the woman’s face.
“I’m going right by there,” I said, which wasn’t a(an) 50 since I had just made up my mind to do 51 that.
I got in my car and began the journey back. I was trying to watch to be sure they were right 52 me. It took only fifteen minutes to get there as rush hour traffic was beginning to 53 . I felt better than I had all day and my headache was nearly gone.
Later, as I arrived home, my husband 54 , “So you aren’t ever late any more.”
I said, “Sometimes it’s 55 to be late.”

It was her giggling (咯咯笑) that drew my attention. Note taking really wasn’t all that funny.
Walking over to the offender (肇事者), I asked for the 36 . Frozen, she refused to give it to me. I waited, all attention in the classroom on the quiet 37 between a teacher and a student. When she finally 38 it over she whispered, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it.” It was a hand-drawn 39 of me, teeth blackened and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth.
I managed to fold it up calmly. My mind, 40 , was working angrily as I struggled not to 41 . I figured I knew the two most likely students who drew the picture. It would do them some 42 to teach them a lesson, and maybe it was high time that I did it.
Thankfully, I was able to keep myself 43 .
When there were about six minutes remaining, I showed the class the picture. They were all silent as I told them how 44 this was for me. I told them there must be a reason 45 and now was their chance to write down anything they needed to tell me. Then I let them write silently while I was seated in the back of the classroom, with tears in my eyes.
As I 46 the notes later, many of them said something like, “I’ve got nothing 47 you.” or “I’m sorry you were hurt.” Some kids said, “We’re afraid of you.” But two notes, from the girls who I 48 drew the picture, had a list of issues. I was too 49 , too strict…
Reading those notes, I realized that over the course of this year, instead of 50 my students, I had begun commanding them to 51 . Where I thought I was driving them to success I was 52 driving them away. I had some apology to make. But the next day in the classroom, one boy and one girl each handed me a card. The one 53 by all the boys expressed sincere regret for the ugly joke. The one from the girls asked for 54 .
This was a lesson for both the kids and me. Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the 55 .
