Almost every career requires such skills as listening, speaking, reading, writing, decision making,
researching, reasoning, creativity, persuasion, leadership, interpersonal communication, and organization.
In addition, a number of characteristics that may be important for specific jobs: achievement,
aggressiveness, ambition, dependability, discipline, honesty, initiative, motivation, people orientation,
persistence, responsibility, selfconfidence, selfstarting, sensitivity, sincerity, tenacity, and toughmindedness. The way you acquire these skills and behaviors is, to a great extent, up to you. Without them, no matter
how bright and knowledgeable you may be, landing a top job is of extreme difficulty, if not impossible.
The most likely way to obtain these skills and behaviors is through courses, reading, internships, parttime
or fulltime employment, extracurricular activities, and participation in community functions.
Knowing what an employer is looking for in a potential employee can help an applicant to prepare for
an interview. An interviewer for a major corporation was asked these questions: What specific skills are
you looking for in applicants? And how do you identify these skills? He responded :
Most important for us in the way of skills is the ability to communicate-can people speak clearly?
Can they articulate the kind of person they believe themselves to be? In what kind of work situations do
they perform well? What are their strengths and weaknesses? We want to know about the personal
qualities of the individual, so I try to ask questions to draw them out and attempt to find out if they have
a sense of themselves. What I'm looking for is an ability to verbalize an idea in clear, simple,
understandable language. I'm also looking for the ability to listen attentively and then to be able to
respond to an idea or thought that has been presented to them. If they do have good communication
skills, they will be able to do this logically and succinctly.
I am looking for creativity -can they be spontaneous? I will ask some "offthewall" questions just to
see if this throws them. How do they respond in these tough situations-can they be creative with their
answers? This is very important when they are out in business situations with customers. They will have
to respond to very sudden changes and problemsolving situations that they are not necessarily familiar
with, and I want to know if they can handle them.
What we look for the most are personal qualities-assertiveness, selfmotivation, drive, ambition, and
a competitive instinct. They should be high achievers and want to work hard. I can usually tell about
these qualities from the way the person presents himself or herself and some of the activities they have
engaged in. I pick up things from the applications and resume-how they have written them and the kinds
of things they say.  How they present their experiences is often very informative. For example, an
assertive person will say, "I can do these things" and "I decided on this course of action, " whereas a
more passive person might say, "These are the experiences I have had." All of these things describe the
person in some way.

A British student writing for the Guardian's website recently attracted the criticism of
thousands of readers with his very first post.
Max Gogarty, 19, had started a blog about his trip to India and Thailand. The idea was
not paiticularly original and. in many people's view, the writing wasn't either.Within minutes,
people began to post negative comments:"l've been more entertained cleaning mould from
my fridge than I was reading your first post. "
So how did Max land his job? The Guardian's online community soon reached their own
conclusion :" Great to see nepotism ( 任人唯亲) is alive and well."said one poster.
Max's father is a travel writer who had previously published work in the Guardian.
Within minutes, one poster had provided a link to an article from 2002 , in which Max's
dad writes about a trip to Thailand with his family. Many were quick to suppose Max had
used his father's connections to get his job. By the end of the next day, the criticism was so
heavy that the blog was closed, but the damage had been done.
From Facebook to Wikipedia. social networking and gossip websites all over the
Internet were discussing Max's case.
Max's experience highlights the difference between traditional media and the Internet.
As online community specialist DanWilsonwritesinhisblog: " Inthe blogosphere respect
comes from below. Readers have power and opinions that count. You've got to be real
and attractive to the people who read you. "
Part of the reason for this is that falsehoods and half-truths canbe exposed(曝光)
immediately online. For example, the Guardian's travel editor attempted to defend publishing
the story. He said he'd called Max because of his track record and talent. But then one
reader pointed out: " Didn't you post yesterday sayingMax got in touch with us because
he writes occasionally for the TV program Skins'? Are you a liar?"
What we can learn here is to be careful when we read and write online. Always be
sure to think about why a person might be writing something, and don't necessarily believe
what we read.

Adam Smith was the first person to see the importance of the division of the labor. He gave us an
example of the process by which pins were made in England.
One man draws out the wire, another strengthens it, a third cuts it, a fourth points it, and a fifth gives
it a head. Just to make the head requires two or three different operations. The work of making pins is
divided into about eighteen different operations, which in some factories are all performed by different
people, though in others the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them.
Ten men, Smith said, in this way, turned out twelve pounds of pins a day or about 4,800 pins a
worker. But if all of them had worked separately and independently without division of labor, they
certainly could not have made twenty pins in a day and not even one.
There can be no doubt that division of labor is an efficient way of organizing work.  Fewer people
can make more pins. Adam Smith saw this, but he also took it for granted that the division of labor is
itself responsible for economic growth and development and it accounts for the difference between
expanding economies and those that stand still. In fact, the division of labor adds nothing new, and it
only enables people to produce more of what they already have.
1. According to the passage, Adam Smith was the first person to ________.
A. take advantage of the physical labor
B. introduce the division of labor into England
C. understand the effects of the division of labor
D. explain the causes of the division of labor
2. Adam Smith saw that the division of labor ________.
A. enabled each worker to design pins more quickly
B. increased the possible output of per worker
C. increased the number of people employed in factories
D. improved the quality of pins produced
3. Adam Smith mentioned the number 4,800 in order to ________.
A. show the advantages of the old labor system
B. stress how powerful the individual worker was
C. show the advantages of the division of labor
D. stress the importance of increasing production
4. According to the writer, Adam Smith's mistake was in believing that the division of labor ________.
A. was an efficient way of organizing work
B. was an important development in methods of production
C. finally led to economic development
D. increased the production of existing goods

Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life,
and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you
might ask yourself is: "How do I get a good job?"    1    .
There are people who can answer an insignificant advertisement in the local paper and land the
best job in the world; others write to all sorts of places all over the country, and never seem to get
a reply at all. Still others believe that the in person, door-to-door approach is by far the best way to
get a job; and then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the
right place at the right time.    2    . He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching
the tall ships, but never thinking that he might one day sail one of them. His father was a farmer, and
being a sailor could never be anything for the boy but an idle dream. One day, on his usual wandering,
he heard the captain of the ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew
was sick. Without stopping to think, the lad(少年)offered to take his place.     3    .
4    . If the lad had gone home to consider about his decision for a week, he may have missed his
chance. It is one thing to be offered an opportunity; it is another thing to take it and use it well.
Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land plum jobs
(美差). When you go for a job interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things
about the company to which you are applying.     5    . And within a year this person had become
general manger of the company.
A. This story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself.
B. People find jobs in an infinite number of ways.
C. it's almost impossible to find a good job by answering advertisement in newspapers
D. Take for example the young man who wanted to be a sailor.
E. But there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the company's faults.
F. He spent the rest of his life happily sailing the ships he had always loved.
G. It is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself.

Memo
To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, "Sports for life" programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our stuff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more
information about it. Here is a memo(备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1 : Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised
to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To
cover the cost of hiring a bus , each student will have to pay ﹩10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter's Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is
not very busy and crowed before 6:00pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students
must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor
aerobics一(有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on
duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3:Hiking
Hiking(远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30pm and finish 90 minutes
later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of
15 hikers. Each instructor will cost﹩75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the
pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (2:45pm-3:45pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The poor will have two
lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is﹩10 per visit.

Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for (getting) criticism.
Their critics seem to resent(对...不满) them because they have a gift for self-promotion and because
they have so much money to throw around. 'It's unjust,' they say, 'that this entirely unproductive industry
(if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit
the big companies are making. Why don't they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods?
After all, it's the consumer who pays…'
The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets
for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we
get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important
function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods comes largely from
the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence
of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely
you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.
Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted.
It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think
what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing
at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws(内部规则) while waiting for a train? Would you like to read
only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such
a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration(定量) of disasters.
We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist (survive) without this source of revenue.
The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due
entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its
full price!
Another thing we mustn't forget is the 'small ads.' which are in virtually every newspaper and
magazine.  What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything
can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house,
announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the 'hatch(giving birth), match and
dispatch' column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or 'agony' column(读者来信
专栏). No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight
into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!
1. What is main idea of this passage?
A. Advertisement.   B. The benefits of advertisement.
C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.
D. The costs of advertisement.
2. The attitude of the author toward advertisers is
A. appreciative.
B. trustworthy.
C.critical.
D. dissatisfactory.
3. Why do the critics criticize advertisers?
A. Because advertisers often brag(自夸).
B. Because critics think advertisement is a "waste of money".
C. Because customers are encouraged to buy more than necessary.
D. Because customers pay more.
4. Which of the following is Not True?
A. Advertisement makes contribution to our pockets and we may know everything.
B. We can buy what we want.
C. Good quality products don't need to be advertised.
D. Advertisement makes our life colorful.
5. The passage is           .

What has the telephone done to us or for us in the hundred years of its existence? A few effects suggest
themselves at once. It has saved lives by getting rapid word of illness, injury, or fire from distant places. By
joining with the lift to make possible the multi-story building or office building, it has made possible-for better
or worse-the modem city. By bringing about a great leap in the speed and ease with which information moves
from place to place, it has greatly sped up the rate of scientific and technological changes and growth in
industry. Beyond doubt it has seriously weakened, if not killed, the ancient art of letter writing It has made living
alone possible for persons with normal desires; by so doing, it has played a mile in one of the greatest social
changes of this century, the breakup of the multi generational house-hold. It has made the war more efficient
than before. Perhaps though not provably (可证实), it has prevented wars that might have arisen out of
international misunderstanding caused by written communication. Or perhaps-again not probably-by
magnifying and extending irrational (非理性的) personal disagreement based on voice contact, it has caused
wars. Certainly it has extended the scope (范围) of human conflicts, since it fairly spreads the useful knowledge
of scientists and the nonsense of the ignorant (无知者), the affection of the affectionate and the malice (恶意)
of the malicious.

A. The telephone has helped to save people from illness and fire.
B. The telephone has helped to prevent wars and conflicts.
C. The telephone has made the modem city neither better nor worse.
D. The telephone has had positive as well as negative effects on us.

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you'll probably be surprised when you come in someone will give you an
electronic PIN (个人身份号码) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The
house uses this information to give you what you need. When it's dark outside, the PIN turns on
the lights nearest to you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with
you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but
in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the
nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console,
a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you
want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works
for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the
console.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I've put in my house.
The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I've put in today.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one
day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself  nstead, "How will I live without them?"

1. What does the passage mainly discuss?
     A. How to develop a new system.
     B. The function of the PIN
     C. A home for the future
     D. Easy life in the future.

2. What's the purpose when the writer wrote the fourth paragraph?
     A. To let readers know why his ideas are new
     B. To explain what the functions of the PIN and the console are
     C. To explain the importance of the PIN and the console.
     D. To let readers know how special his house is.

3. The writer's new house is different from ordinary ones mainly because _______.
     A. it has your favorite music following you
     B. you can make a telephone call anywhere
