Broken rubber bands and flat tires requiring replacement could soon be a thing of the past.

French researchers have developed a new kind of rubber that can repair itself when broken. The new rubber is made from widely available materials including vegetable oil and a common industrial chemical. All the materials are considered safe to the environment and can be easily reused.

The best part is that the new rubber can be repaired and used again and again without losing its strength or ability or stretch. When cut, the rubber can be made new again, simply by pressing the two broken ends back together.

The product can be repaired at room temperature, around twenty degrees Centigrade;other self-healing materials require higher temperatures for repair.

Traditionally, rubber substances are made from huge molecules(分子)connected by strong chemical links, or bonds. The new rubber is made of smaller molecules. The molecules are linked together using hydrogen bonds. When connected in this way, the molecules act like one long molecule, forming what is called supramolecular networks(超分子网).When the rubber is cut, the molecules attempt to connect with whatever molecule is near them. When pressed together, the molecules are able to repair themselves at the molecular level, making the repaired rubber like new.

However, time is an important element in the process. If the broken ends are not brought together quickly, a repair is not possible. This is because molecules will form bonds with molecules on their own side. The inventors say the surfaces of the rubber can be repaired within a week of being separated.

The rubber is the creation of scientists at the Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher Education Institution in Paris. The organization is part of France's National Center for Scientific Research. The new material is described in greater detail in the research publication Nature

Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes (结合)for the recycling of waste. The word "rubbish"  could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and un??pleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rub??ber.

Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers break up everything that can be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the fi??nal stage.

The first full-scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transpor??ting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

1. The main purpose of the passage is ________.

A. to show us a future way of recycling wastes  B. to tell the importance of recycling wastes

C. to warn people the danger of some wastes    D. to introduce a new recycling plant

2. How many stages are there in the recycling process?

A. 3.                 B. 4.                C. 5.                           D. 6.

3. What is the main reason for big cities to build their own re??cycling plants?

A. To deal with wastes in a better way.  B. It’s a good way to gain profits.

C. It’s more economical than to dump wastes in some dis??tant places.

D. Energy can be got at a lower price.

4. The first full-scale huge recycling plants ________.

A. have been in existence for 15 years    B. takes 15 years to build

C. can’t be built until 15 years later        D. will remain functioning for 15 years

Greeks play a special game at Easter and it’s good fun! The rules of the game are as follows: 1.Everyone picks out a hard-boiled Waster Egg.2.Each player finds a partner. One person will be a “holder”, and the other will be a “tapper”.Holders should hold the egg with either the pointy end or the round end facing up.Tappers should hold the egg with that same end facing down.Tapping must be done pointy-end-to-pointy-end or round-end-to-round-end.3.With one good tap, the tapper tries to crack the holder’s egg.One player will end up with a cracked egg.4.Each player finds another partner and repeats steps 2 and 3.(After one end of the egg is cracked, players may continue to play using the uncracked end).5.A player loses when both ends of his egg have been cracked. The winner is the person who still has an uncracked egg.6.Enjoy eating the eggs!

Dye your Easter eggs. With an adult’s help, dye hard-boiled eggs red using food coloring or egg dye.For a nice sheen, use a paper towel to rub some oil on each egg.But don’t use too much oil---you wouldn’t want your egg to slide out of your hand when you play the egg-cracking game!

Why dye eggs red? Eggs represent new life and the red dye symbolizes the pain and suffering in the past.

Why crack eggs? Some say that the cracking of the eggs symbolizes a wish to break away from human misery and enter the new life.

Did you know that a bowl of rice could save your iPod if you drop it in a swimming pool by accident? Or that the camera on your phone could tell you what's wrong with your TV remote control? The experts at Geek Squad (geelsquad.co.uk) have made a gadget(小机件) rescue guide. So, let’s take a look at some of their useful advice.
● How to get more juice out of your phone battery(电池)
If your battery goes dead but you need to get a number or send one last text, try warming it up. That may give you a tiny bit of power. Take the battery from the phone and rub it between your hands. Or warm it under your arm for a few minutes. Then try to start the phone – but use it quickly.
● What to do if your gadget gets wet
First, try drying it out with a vacuum cleaner. If a vacuum cleaner isn’t at hand, fill a pot or bowl with uncooked rice and put your we gadget inside. The dry, uncooked rice will absorb all the water and, after a few hours, you should be able to use the gadget. Don’t forget to remove the battery and SIM card before you dry it.
● What to do if your TV remote control stops working
If replacing the batteries doesn’t work, get the camera function up on your phone and point the remote at the lens(镜头). When you press a button on the remote, if it's working then the glass bobble(小球) at the front of the remote will light up when you look at it on the screen of your phone. This is because the screen on a phone or digital camera picks up infrared rays (红外线), even though your eyes don't. If the glass bobble doesn’t light up, the remote is broken. If it does, the receiving device is broken.
43.If your cell phone falls into a sink, you can         .
A.warm it up under your arm.       B.put it into the uncooked rice.
C.press it with both of your hands.    D.remove the battery after you dry it.
44.Why can a phone be used to prove the TV remote control works well?
A.Because it can receive infrared ray.
B.Because it can reflect infrared ray.
C.Because it can improve the TV remote control.
D.Because it can picture the TV remote control.
45.In which section of a newspaper can we possibly read this text?
A.Entertainment     B.Finance        C.Culture       D.Life
46.The purpose of the passage is to give people        .
A.professional guides     B.necessary warnings
C.practical tips              D.personal opinions
