When I was fifteen months old.I fell on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to blind it.And as I grew, this sightless eye , in so many ways controlled me that I walked with my face looking at the floor so people would not see the ugly me.

Yet Mama would hold me in her arms and stroke my hair and say,“If you hold your head up high,it will be OK.And people will see your beautiful soul.”She continued this message whenever I wanted to hide.

As a little child,I thought Mama meant,“Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking.”As a teenager, I found that my mama’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face,I let them recognize the intelligence and beauty behind my eyes.

In high school I was successful both academically and socially.I was even elected class president, but inside me I still felt like a freak(畸形人).When things got really bad,I would cry to my mama and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world.Let them see the beauty that is inside.”

When I met the man who became my partner for life,we looked each other straight in the eye,and he told me I was beautiful inside and out.Mama’s love and encouragement were the spark that gave me the confidence to overcome my own doubt.

“Hold your head up high” has been heard many times in my home. Each of my children has felt its invitation. The gift my mama gave me lives on in another generation.

As soon as you meet, or even see, a person, you form an impression of him based on his posture, gestures and facial expressions. This is why it is important to make a good first impression on the person who will be interviewing you. Within the first 60 seconds of meeting you, the interviewer will have formed an impression about what type of person you are and what kind of employee you would become, and 55% of this will be based only on your body language. Here are some tips to make that impression a good one.

First of all, relax. Think positive thoughts and you are more likely to come across as a positive, confident person during the interview. Dress smartly, as your appearance is one of the first things an interviewer will notice you. Stand up straight, and walk in with your shoulders back and your head up. Try to avoid slowing down as you walk into the room because this suggests fear and uncertainty. Shake hands with the interviewer firmly. You should have a positive handshake and a warm smile. Opening your coat or jacket as you sit down shows that you, too, are open.

Posture is important. You should be sitting well back in your seat. Sit up straight and lean forward slightly, but not too much. Sitting at too much of an angle (角度) expresses discomfort and distrust. Tow of the most common defensive (防卫的) signals are crossing your arms and legs, so try to avoid them.

Another important issue is eye contact. Looking someone in the eye shows confidence in yourself and trust in the other person. However, don’t overdo it, as too much eye contact or staring will make the other person uncomfortable. Use more eye contact when listening than when talking, and when you look away, look down. Looking up at the ceiling will make you seem bored or rude.

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.

Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same is in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other’s stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious. That is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.

However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time; in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to hat the former is speaking, to tell him that he is attentive.

If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually expose s himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes the false ides that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.

In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.

Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and specific situation.
