The physical education office of Peking University announced on Aug 27 that the university would build a golf course near Weiming Lake. Golf would thus become an elective course for Peking University's students in the near future.

Peking University's eastern sports ground will be rebuilt into two soccer fields and one golf course. The latter will be designed as 90 meters long and 40 meters wide, occupying only a quarter of the whole sports ground.

The director of the physical education office revealed that a student would make only one stroke on the ground, and one class session would hold no more than 30 students.

Some teachers suspect such an activity will be a waste of university's limited land resources, but the director thinks otherwise, for the place can also be used for such sports as javelin or discus throw.

Jeri Solomon is a morning person but Jim, her husband of 11 years, is not. Early in their life, it caused a problem. “When we were planning our wedding, I wanted to have these big discussions at 8 a. m.,when I had been up for two hours and was fresh, but Jim would just be getting out of bed,” says the 46-year-old designer from Melrose, Mass. “We ended up getting into many arguments because I thought he had no interest, when really he was just still half-asleep.”

The couple learned to work around their differences over the years, but their situation isn’t uncommon, says Katherine Sharkey, professor at BrownUniversity. “More women tend to be larks, while men are like night owls(猫头鹰),” she says.

The question is:Why? The answer lies in each person’s body clock. “The body clock is about 24 hours, thanks to Earth’s 24-hour light-dark cycle,” Sharkey says. “But some people have a longer natural cycle, and some are shorter.” If yours is on the long side, you’re more likely to be a night owl. If it runs short, you’re probably an early riser. But your body clock can change over your lifetime. There’s a developmental piece-school-age children are generally early birds, while teenagers tend to be night owls, and then as they age, adults gradually turn back into morning people,” Sharkey says.

Besides the clear problems with being a night owl if you have fl day job, “night owls tend to be more low-spirited, and have a higher dependence on coffee,” Sharkey says. But the news isn’t all bad. A recent study in Belgium found that night owls can stay more focused as the day goes on, compared with early risers.

Morning people, however, also have advantages. “Larks generally sleep better, have more regular sleep, and have more flexible characters,” Sharkey says. They also tend to be happier and feel healthier than night owls, according to a recent study from the University of Toronto.

Decision-thinking is not unlike poker—it often matters not only what you think, but also what others think you think what you think they think you think. The mental process(过程) is similar. Naturally, this card game has often been of considerable interest to people who are, by any standards, good thinkers.

The great mathematician John von Neumann was one of the founders of game theory. In particular, he showed that all games fall into two classes; there are what he called games of 'perfect information', games like chess where the players can't hide anything or play tricks; they don't win by chance, but by means of logic and skills. Then there are games of 'imperfect information', like poker, in which it is impossible to know in advance that one course of action is better than another.

One mistaken idea about business is that it can be treated as a game of perfect information. Quite the reverse Business, life itself are games which we must normally play with very imperfect information. Business decisions are often made with many unknown and unknowable factors(因素), best poker players. But few business people find it comfortable to admit that they are taking a chance, and many still prefer to believe that they are playing chess, not poker.

1.The subject discussed in this text is _________.

A.the process of reaching decisions

B.the difference between poker and chess.

C.the secret of making good business plans

D.the value of information in winning games

2.An important factor in a game of imperfect information is ___________.

A.rules B.luck

C.time D.ideas

3.Which of the following can be used in place of "Quite the reverse" in paragraph 3?

A.Quite right. B.True enough.

C.Most unlikely. D.Just the opposite.

4.In the writer's opinion, when making business decisions one should ___________ .

A.put perfect information before imperfect information

B.accept the existence of unknown factors

C.regard business as a game of chess

D.mix known and unknown factors

The Loss of Innocence

Innocence is such a precious gift. It’s explained as freedom from guilt or wrong doing.Just imagine never having to worry about anything and having a guilt free mind. Some people wish to save this kind of innocence from being lost from childhood to adulthood.

What would the world be like if innocence were never lost? One way it would benefit humanity is the lack of hatred (仇恨)among the world.During youth, there may be an occasional argument, even a little physical fight, but nothing like firing a handgun at a fellow human being. And children are blind towards the racial differences of others.A kid will hang out with any other kid.It is the lack of innocence and the ignorance we learn from adults that influence children otherwise.Another benefit is the constant desire for fun and adventure. With very little if any time at all for fun,the adventurous mind is lost in time with the responsibilities placed upon adults. If innocence were kept alive, these ambitions would never depart from our lives.

However, other people actually hate the idea of innocence lasting forever. They feel that the lack of organization and mental power of those with innocence would cause extremely destructive consequences to society in general.A large number of individuals would never have the urge to learn, work, and act upon the necessary needs for humanity to survive.Without a proper education which is usually provided by those who no longer live in a world of innocence, people would not have the desire to succeed, get a good job in life,or provide income for their families, which would hurt the lives of children.

The lack of a good education and career would also harm the economy. As long as innocence is kept alive,no one would be terribly angered at the lack of effort people put out in the workplace, resulting in a strong decline in production and quality of needed goods.

Maybe it is wrong in wanting to save innocence. It sure is a nice thought, though.Perhaps innocence was meant to be lost.It was god’s will to make things the way they are,and there is a good purpose for everything. All that remains to be said about innocence is to enjoy it while it lasts.

1.The author believes that the loss of innocence in adulthood should be _______.

A.avoided

B.condemned

C.accepted

D.inspired

2.Lifelong innocence would be beneficial to society in that _______.

A.proper education would be provided

B.there would be no racial discrimination

C.more happy families would be guaranteed

D.people would realize their childhood dreams

3.According to the author, people with innocence can hurt the economy with their lack of _____.

A.motivational will

B.mental ability

C.adventurous ambitions

D.needed goods
