题目内容

I was tired and hungry after a long day of work.
When I walked into the living room, my 12-year-old son 36 up at me and said,“I love you.”I didn't know what to say. For several   37 all I could do was to  38 there and looked down at him.My first thought was that he must need   39 with his homework or he was trying to  40 me for some news.
Finally I asked,“What was that all about?”
“Nothing,”he said.“My teacher said we should   41 our parents that we love them and see what they say.It is  42 .”
The next day I called his teacher to find out more about this “experiment”and how the other parents had  43
“Most of the fathers had the   44 reacting(反应)as you did ,”the teacher said.“When I first  45we try this , I asked the children what they thought their parents would say . Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble.“The 46 is,”the teacher explained, “feeling loved is an important part of  47.It is something all people 48 .What I'm trying to tell the children is that it's too  49 we don't all express those feelings.A boy should be  50 to tell his dad he loves him.”
The teacher, a middle-aged man , understands how  51 it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.
When my son came to me that evening ,I held on to(抱着)him for  52 second. And just before he  53 away, I said in my deepest, most manly(男子气慨)voice,“Hey, I love you ,too.”
I don't know if saying that made either of us healthier, but it did feel pretty good(感觉很好),Maybe next time one of my children said“I love you”,it wouldn't take me a whole  54 to think of the right 55 .

Perhaps the most interesting person I have ever met is an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the University of Pisa.    21    I last met this man eight years ago, I have not forgotten his    22    qualities. First of all, I respected his   23    to teaching. Because his lectures were always well-prepared and clearly delivered, students crowded into his classroom. His followers liked the fact that he    24   what he taught. Furthermore, he could be counted on(依赖) to explain his ideas in an     25    way, introducing such aids to   26   as oil paintings, music, and guest lecturers. Once he    27    sang a song in class in order to make a point clear.    28   , 1 admired the fact that he would talk to students outside the classroom or talk with them    29   the telephone. Drinking coffee in the cafe, he would easily make friends with students. Sometimes he would    30   a student to a game of chess.    31 , he would join student groups to discuss a variety of     32  :agriculture, diving and mathematics. Many young people visited him in his office for    33    on their studies; others came to his home for social evenings. Finally, I was    34   by his lively sense of humor. He believed that no lesson is a success    35    , during it, the students and the professor    36   at least one loud    37  . Through his sense of humor, he made learning more    38     and more lasting. If it is    39     that life makes a wise man smile and a foolish man cry,    40    my friend is indeed a wise man.

There was a time in my life when beauty meant something special to me. I guess that would have been when I was about six or seven years old, just several weeks or maybe a month before the orphanage(孤儿院)turned me into an old man.
I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like the little soldier that I had become and then I would get into one of the two straight lines and march to breakfast with the other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.
After breakfast one Saturday morning I returned to the dormitory and saw the house parent chasing the beautiful monarch butterflies who lived by the hundreds in the bushes scattered around the orphanage.
I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful creatures, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins through their head and wings, pinning them onto a heavy cardboard sheet.
How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. I had walked many times out into the bushes, all by myself, just so the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands so I could look at them up close.
When the telephone rang the house parent laid the large cardboard paper down on the back cement(水泥)step and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the cardboard and looked at the one butterfly who he had just pinned to the large paper. It was still moving about so I reached down and touched it on the wing causing one of the pins to fall out.It started flying around and around trying to get away but it was still pinned by the one wing with the other straight pin. Finally its wing broke off and the butterfly fell to the ground and just trembled.
I picked up the torn wing and the butterfly and I spat on its wing and tried to get it to stick back on so it could fly away and be free before the house parent came back. But it would not stay on him.

My husband Ollie had retired from teaching and we were making plans to travel together to Florida. Then he was terribly ill and became very weak, hardly able to speak. Weeks passed and it became clear that Ollie was near death, but I prayed day and night that he could get better.
One of us was always in Ollie’s hospital room—either me, or our grown children, Bruce and Karen. One day, in his broken and weak speech, Ollie told Bruce, “Go home. You should be with Gwen.” Gwen was Bruce’s wife. They had been married for six years and lived hundreds of miles away. Gwen was about to have a baby. We felt an extra sadness, knowing Ollie would never see his first grandchild.
“I don’t want to leave you, Dad,” Bruce said. Ollie repeated, “You should be with Gwen.” Reluctantly, Bruce left. “When the baby comes,” he promised Ollie, “you will be the first to know.” A few days later, around 2 p.m., Ollie awoke from a sleep. He turned and looked at me. I sat close to hear his weak words. “The baby is coming now. It’s a boy,” he said. For a moment his eyes were filled with tears. Then he went back to sleep again. Not long after that, Karen ran into the room. “Bruce called,” she said, a smile lighting her face. “Gwen gave birth to a healthy baby boy around two o’ clock.”
Ollie smiled; he had been the first to know. That night, Ollie died in his sleep.

EVERYONE NEEDS FRIENDS
Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with.Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are just the same.Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will make up and go on being friends.
Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad.We miss them very much. But we call them and write to them.It could be that we would neven see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.
Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many people are named after men or women who have been friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way.So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.
There is more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don’t.Why?It could be that they are happier.Being happy helps you stay well.Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you,you take better care of yourself.

I was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in a toy store. A nicely dressed little girl was  36  the teddy bears beside her father  37 she saw a little boy walk in and stop in front of the Pokémon toys. His jacket was obviously too small. He had money in his hand.   38 , it looked no more than five dollars at most. He was with his father as well, and  39 picking up the Pokémon video games. Each time he showed one to his father, his father  40  his head, “No”.
Rather  41 , the boy gave up the video games and chose a book of stickers  42 . After they walked away, the little girl ran over to the Pokémon video games.
