Hundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.

One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill. “We will rest here tonight,my men,” he said. “Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die.”

They were all very tired,so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they, too, were very tired, and one by one, also fell asleep.

The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟). He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country.

The thistle is not a beautiful plant. It has sharp needles all over it. Few people like it. But the people of Scotland liked it so much that they made it their national flower.

On June 5,1981 the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, U.S.announced the presence of a rare, infectious disease in five American homosexuals(同性恋).Soon doctors were finding similar cases all over the country and the world. The AIDS epidemic(流行病)had officially begun.By 1983 it was clear that AIDS had spread around the world.More than twenty years later, AIDS has left twenty-six million dead and another forty million infected.AIDS has become the worst medical disaster ever experienced by mankind.

Hundreds of young people between the ages of 20 and 45 died each week during the early years of the U.S.AIDS.More than 600 000 cases of AIDS have been reported since 1981 in the United States, and it is estimated that there may be as many as 900 000 Americans infected with HIV.

Though the rate of HIV infections continues to increase in the United States, the number of AIDS cases has fallen sharply since 1996, when antiretroviral drugs came into the market.Unfortunately, the AIDS epidemic continues today in Africa and much of Asia, where antiretroviral treatment is not available and health care is far from enough.AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, and the No.1 cause of death due to infectious disease.

HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was first separated in 1983 by a team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. That discovery made it possible to develop a test for AIDS and trace back to victims who may have died before doctors were aware of the disease.

However, scientists still don’t know exactly how and where AIDS started.Finding the source of AIDS could be important in developing a vaccine(疫苗)and be important in mapping the future course of the epidemic.

antiretroviral drugs will be obtained easily all over the world

B.

the best way to stop AIDS is to develop a vaccine

C.

scientists will soon find a way to cure AIDS

D.

there will be fewer AIDS cases in the world in the future

(2)

The number of AIDS cases has greatly decreased in the United States due to the fact ________.

[ ]

A.

a team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris succeeded in separating HIV

B.

some effective medicine has been invented

C.

scientists understand AIDS better and better

D.

the rate of HIV infections continues to rise in the United States

(3)

What’s the importance of the discovery of the source of AIDS?

[ ]

A.

It can be used to develop a test for AIDS.

B.

It can stop HIV forming AIDS.

C.

It can reduce the rate of death caused by AIDS.

D.

It can help develop a drug to prevent AIDS.

(4)

When did the name of AIDS come into being?

A.

In 1983.

B.

In 1981.

Hundreds of new drivers taken to the road and traffic accidents can be seen easily in many cities every day.According to a report from the authority, more than 80% of the traffic accidents were caused by new drivers last year.Another shocking report from some Traffic Departments in Hangzhou says: more than half of the traffic accidents and deaths in the area for the first ten months of last year involved new drivers.

So how to avoid the accident? For almost all new drivers, they would try a way of using signs in their car windows like “I’m new”, “New on the road, pay attention” or “Don’t kiss me, I’m shy” so that they could get much sympathy(同情)from other drivers. But since a new rule on driver safety took effect in Shenzhen on March 30, 2004, new drivers in Shenzhen can’t do that any longer.Although the signs are cute, they could get you a 100-yuan fine(罚款).So new drivers in Shenzhen find themselves under more pressure now for the new rules.

Why are signs not allowed to be used by new drivers? One of the reasons is that some experienced drivers think those funny or “creative” signs sometimes attract their attention. When they are out of mind, traffic accidents will happen and some think the signs can block(遮挡)the drivers’ view so they can’t see the road clearly. However, most new drivers point that driving at a high speed is the main reason for traffic accident.

Even though they have the license, the new drivers haven’t improved much and got enough experience. So I think it’s not such a bad thing to put those signs up.On the contrary, both experienced drivers and new drivers may benefit(受益).For experienced drivers they’re a warning; for new drivers they’re a kind of safety screen.

Examples that show new drivers involve more traffic accidents than experienced drivers:

Example 1.(1)________

Example 2.In Hangzhou, more than half of them for the first ten months of last year were caused by new drivers.

What do most new drivers do to avoid the accident?

(2)________

Experienced driver’s opinions about that:

First: The signs attract their attention.

Second:(3)________

Then a new rule took effect in Shenzhen.Signs are not allowed to be used by new drivers.

However, what is the author’s opinion?

(4)He thinks ________
