Shopping carts are such a ubiquitous presence in stores today that it is hard to imagine a time without them. And yet it wasn’t until the year 1937 when the first shopping cart was introduced.

The shopping cart was the brainchild of Sylvan Goldman, the owner of a grocery food chain in 0klahoma.Goldman noticed that his customers struggled to carry their food in heavy hand-held baskets. He decided there must be an easier way for his costomers to carry the food around in his supermarkets.Observing a folding chair, Goldman decided to use that as the prototype for his new shopping cart.

With the aid of a mechanic, Fred Young ,Goldman designed the first shopping cart based on the folding chair.Wheels were placed where the bottoms of the chair legs were. In place of the chair seat, Young and Goldman , placed two metal baskets on top of each other. This cart could be stored by folding it up like a folding chair.

At first there was a bit of difficulty getting the public to accept shopping carts.Men thought using them was effeminate(女人气的)while younger women considered the use of the shopping carts to carry products around to be somewhat unstylish.Goldman solved this problem by hiring men and women models to use shopping carts in his stores. In addition, store     greeters instructed customers in how to use the shopping carts. In short order, the shopping carts became incredibly popular because it made shopping much easier for customers.By 1940 the popularity of shopping carts had grown to such an extent that there was a 7 year waiting list in store orders for new shopping carts.

From hitting the mall with your girl friends on a Saturday afternoon, to holiday spending on gifts that go under the tree, shopping could be called one of America’s favorite pastimes. For most people, it means some new clothes for work or a small trinket for a friend. For others, however, shopping is much more than an enjoyable pastime, and in some cases, it is a real and destructive addiction that can turn into a financial disaster. Compulsive shopping and spending are defined as inappropriate, excessive过度的, and out of control. Like other addictions, it basically has something to do with impulsiveness and lack of control over one’s impulses冲动. In America, shopping is embedded in our culture; so often, the impulsiveness comes out as excessive shopping. Sometimes this is referred to as “shopholism”. Shopping addiction can damage a person’s life, family, and finances. “No one knows what causes addictive behaviors, like shopping, alcoholism, drug abuse, and gambling”, says a professor of applied health science. Some of the new evidence suggests that some people, maybe 10%-15%, may have a genetic predisposition to an addictive behavior, coupled with an environment in which the particular behavior is triggered引发, but no one really knows why.” Individuals will get some kind of high from an addictive behavior like shopping.

What are the telltale signs that shopping has crossed the line and become and addiction? What should a concerned family member or friend look out for when they think shopping has become a problem? The behaviors can signal a serious problem:

·Shopping or spending money as a result of feeling angry, depressed, anxious, or lonely

·Having arguments with others about one’s shopping habits

·Feeling lost without credit cards — actually going into withdrawal without them

·Buying items on credit, rather than with cash

·Describing a rush or a feeling of euphoria with spending

·Feeling guilty, ashamed, or embarrassed after a spending spree(大买特买)

·Thinking obsessively about money

·Spending a lot time juggling accounts or bills to accommodate spending

“If someone identifies four or more of any of these behaviors, there may be a problem”, experts say. Treating a shopping addiction requires a multifaceted approach. There are no standard treatments for shopping addiction. Medications have been used, but with mixed results. Therapists also focus on cognitive-behavioral treatment programs. There is no quick and easy answer that will immediately cure a shopping addiction, and while treatment is a necessary part of solving the problem, so is behavior change on the part of the addict.

Some basic changes in behavior that will have a big impact on breaking a shopping addiction are recommended:

·Admit that you are a compulsive spender, which is half the battle.

·Get rid of checkbooks and credit cards, which fuel the problem.

·Don’t shop by yourself because most compulsive shoppers shop alone and if you are with someone you are much less likely to append more.

·Find other meaningful ways to spend time.

And keep in mind that while behavior change is clearly important to recovery, so is reaching out for professional help.(509)

Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important in your life?”, maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet.”

The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today.”

The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends.

Many students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their real names, ages, and even sex (性别). They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their heart into study. Many of them can’t catch up with others on many subjects because of that.

We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.

       C. It is not good for students.      D. It is helpful, but we can’t do everything on it.

Retail therapy(购物疗法)has long been considered as a good way to let off stress. Now, US scientists have discovered not only does retail therapy exist, but that it could be caused by an individual's fear of sudden death.

Researchers found materialistic people thought terrorism and war more stressful than others.

Psychologists believe the rise of materialism around the world and its treatment effect on extreme stress might be a response to fear of death caused by acts of terrorism, disease and natural disasters.

The scientists from Michigan State University said people with possession obsessions(妄想)often have lower self-esteem than others so are more likely to shop as the result of severe psychological suffering.

Ayalla Ruvio,a business professor studying people's shopping habits while rockets fell in Israel, said, "When the going gets tough, the materialistic people go shopping. This stress spending is likely to produce even greater stress and lower well-being. Essentially, materialism appears to make bad events even worse.

Dr Ruvio led a two-part study of Israeli citizens living in a town that came under extreme rocket attacks for about six months in 2007. She compared 139 residents of the southern town with 170 from another town that was not under attack to see how their symptoms of post-traumatic stress and shopping habits varied. Dr Ruvio found that, when faced with a deadly threat, those who are highly materialistic suffered much higher levels of stress, while their tendency to shop was increased.

Dr Ruvio said, "The relationship between materialism and stress may be more harmful than commonly thought.”

The second stage of their research surveyed 855 Americans about their materialistic nature and fear of death. They found shopping was used to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety about death but this was in response to fear of a variety of life-threatening events like car accidents, criminal attacks and natural disasters.

A. They enjoy the special shopping culture.

B. The stresses they face are usually deadly.

C. They are in different situation in terms of war.

D. They are usually active participants for researchers.

3.What's the result about Dr Ruvio's research?

A. Impulsive spending does good to people's health.

B. Shopping can't lower one's stress as it is expected.

C. Faced with great stress, people feel hopeless for life.

D. Faced with threat, people's wish to shop will decrease.

4.Which of the following events threaten people's life?

①Greater stress; ②Car accidents; ③Criminal attacks;. ④Natural disasters;

A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④
