When people discuss education, they insist that preparation for cxanuii^ tions is not the main purpose. They are right in theory, but in practice,v.. i!realize how important examinations are. What do you know about the examinn tious taken at English secondary schools? Here are a few facts about some of them.

Pupils who remain at school until they are sixteen normally take what is called the General Certificate (合格证) of Education at Ordinary Level. The ex?amination is a subject examination. This means you can take a number of sub?jects. Some pupils take as many as ten. The more subjects, the better chance a pupil has of getting a job on leaving school. For short, this examination is called G.C. E. "O" Level. This certificate in five or six subjects is,if you like, the required starting point for types of work and also for many types of profes?sional training.

Pupils who remain at school until they are eighteen generally take the General Certificate of Education at Advanced Level, popularly known as G. V. E. "A" Level. This examination is usually taken in two?three or four special?ized subjects. And because it is for the specialist, you have to study each sub?ject intensively. A pupil who has passed two or three "A” levels can apply for admission to a university.

These two examinations are written ones. Many English children take one or the other or both. Not all of them pass.

I began learning the violin when I was nine, and the next year I began studying under Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.

Once,Mrs Ghent held a concert for her students. I played near the end of it. After I played a while,I forgot the music. No matter how I tried,I couldn't think of it. So I had to stop and looked at the pianist's music. When the whole concert was over,I cried hiding in my overcoat.

Mrs Ghent came to comfort me. Then she told us about a coming concert, and she hoped I would go there with her. I remember that the concert was on my birthday in March. It was great,as Mischa Elman was going to perform at Carnegie Hall. My teacher decided to buy the best tickets as my birthday pres?ent.

Carnegie Hall is quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in such a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. I don't re?member what Elman played. I only remember that his playing was beautiful. I have seen films of him in recent years, and have been struck by his perform?ance, but I don't remember the music he played that night. What I remember most is Mrs Ghent whispering to me from time to time that he had forgotten something or played a wrong note,or made some other kind of mistake.

When I teach students to play the violin now,I tell my students who are in dread of making mistakes that if they aren't going to make a mistake, they will never play beautiful music.
