If I were writing a history of my family, some of the darkest moments recorded would be those surrounding Christmas trees. One would certainly think otherwise;selecting and puRing up our trees have always been filled with risk. For example, one afternoon dangerously close to Christmas Eve my mother bought what she thought to be a bargain,a glorious tree that was so full and tall that we could hardly get it into the house.Once we did,my father immediately realized that we would have to hire a carpenter to build a stand for it.Another December perhaps the very next one,we bought a tree earlier than we ever had before. We were happy with its shape and delighted that its size was manageable. We easily placed it in a stand, decorated it from top to bottom, and then self satisfiedly sat back by the fire in its soft light. Two or three days passed and the truth could not be hidden;we had bought a tree cut so long ago that its needles were coming off. There was nothing to do but undecorate it,take it down, and begin tree shopping again. Our most recent Christmas tree offered still another difficult task. When we brought it home, once again it seemed larger than it was in the great outdoors.I persuaded two young neighbors to stop playing basketball and to help us get the tree into the house and set it correctly in the stand.Unfortunately,no one noticed the mud on our helpers’shoes,so only after removing several reddish brown spots from the carpet were we able to discuss the question of where the lights and ornaments(装饰)were stored.Perhaps those who cut their own trees have tales more painful than these.I don’t care to hear them,as my family’s experiences are enough to cause me to make the following suggestion:”Let’s forget the tree next Christmas.Let’s simply hang some flowers on the front door and over the mirror in the hall.”

A priest(牧师) had a cat that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The priest persuaded, offered warm milk, et The kitty would not come down. The tree was not strong enough to climb, so the priest decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitty. He did so, checking his progress in the car frequently, then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent enough for him to reach the kitty. But as he moved a little further forward, the rope broke.
The tree went “boing!” and the kitty at once sailed through the air —out of sight. The priest felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen his kitty. Nobody had seen a lost kitty.
So, he prayed, “God, I just give this kitty to your keeping,” and went on about his business.
Several days later he was at the grocery store, meeting one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. Now this woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?”
She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, you can keep it.” She told the priest, “I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. You won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A cat suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws spread out, and landed right in front of her.”

Redwood trees are the tallest plants on the earthreaching heights of up to 100 metersThey are also known for their longevitytypically 500 to 1000 yearsbut sometimes more than 2000 yearsA hundred million years agoin the age of dinosaursredwoods were common in the forests of a much more moist and tropical North AmericaAs the climate became drier and colderthey declined to a narrow strip along the Pacific coast of Northern Califomia

The trunk of redwood trees is very strong and usually forms a single straight columnIt is covered with a soft barkThis bark can be pretty thickwell over two feet in the more mature treesIt gives the older trees a certain kind of protection from insectsbut the main benefit is that it keeps the center of the tree harmless from moderate forest fires because of its thicknessThis fire resistant quality explains why the giant redwood grows to live that longWhile most other types of trees are destroyed by forest firesthe giant redwood actually prospers because of them

Moderate fires will clear the ground of competing plant lifeand the rising heat dries and opens the ripe fruit of the redwoodreleasing many thousands of seeds onto the ground below
