【题目】The universe has never failed to catch human’s attention. The ancient humans came up with stories to explain the presence of the suns and other planets. As time went by, humans set their sights on exploring the vastness of space. In 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon’s surface. 1

·It allows people to know more about the universe.

Undoubtedly, space exploration has answered the question of whether the earth is round or not and proved the earth does circle around the sun and not the other way around. 2 It gives people a deeper understanding about the universe and provides them with more information about the world they live in.

·It paves the way to advanced technology.

Scientists are always developing new technology for space programs, but the good news is that these new innovations(创新) aren’t just useful for astronauts and space programs. 3 In fact they have already led to the development of modern products and devices that many people use such as the GPS systems, and breast cancer test imaging, to name a few.

·4

Space exploration doesn’t just involve scientists and astronauts; it also requires the skills and labor of many engineers, research assistants, technicians, mechanics, and other professionals. If space exploration would be stopped today, these people would become jobless, and they wouldn’t have the means to support themselves and their families.

It can offer a solution to many problems.

Aside from collecting information about the outer space, many space exploration programs are used to solve some of the problems with our modern society. Some programs, for example, help scientists learn more about the earth’s atmosphere and know how to better predict weather and natural disasters. 5 This may be the solution to the earth’s growing population.

Space exploration is one of the biggest achievements of humans as a whole, and it has paved the way to greater scientific understanding and technological advancement over the years. I can see no reason why we should stop our exploration.

A. It creates many jobs.

B. But it does much more than that.

C. It was a big step in space exploration.

D. They can also be used in other industries.

E. They also help scientists know more about the earth.

F. Others focus on looking for planets that can support human life.

G. Since then, space exploration has been going on and brought many benefits.

2B根据后边It gives people a deeper understanding about the universe and provides them with more information about the world they live in.(它让人们对宇宙有了更深的了解,并为他们提供了更多关于他们生活的世界的信息。)可知,对宇宙的探索不止是前面所提到的这些,B项符合文意,故填B。

3D根据前边but the good news is that these new innovations (创新) aren’t just useful for astronauts and space programs.(但好消息是这些新的创新(创新)不只是用于宇航员和太空项目。)可知,也会应用于其他行业,D项符合文意,故填D。

4A根据后边If space exploration would be stopped today, these people would become jobless, and they wouldn’t have the means to support themselves and their families.(如果今天停止太空探索,这些人就会失业,他们也没有办法养活自己和家人。)可知,创造了很多工作机会,A项符合文意,故填A。

5F根据后边This may be the solution to the earth’s growing population.(这可能是地球不断增长的人口的解决方案。)可知,要说寻找能够支持人类生命的行星,F项符合文意,故填F。

【题目】American Country Music

Over the past twenty years, American country music has become more and more popular. Song writers are no longer writing about the modern values of the USA—money, success or expensive things to buy. Instead they are writing once more about things that are common for everyone: feeling alone in the modern world, the value of having good friends and so on.

In the 1950s, American music was about other things, for example, love—getting or losing a boyfriend or girlfriend. Money was also thought to be important.

Then in the 1960s, song writers turned to other subjects. During these years many young students were angry with society, so songs were often full of anger. Political leaders were not well thought of and those songs often made fun of them.

Today country music has returned. It has become big business and brings in between 200 and 400 million dollars a year. Once, the home of American country music was Nashville, Tennessee. Now, however, the music has reached all parts of the States, from Los Angeles in the west to New York in the east. Singers do not just come from the States but from all over the world. There are many famous singers from Britain, Canada and Australia. A lot of them appear on television too.

The first country singers sang while playing the guitar. It was easy for them to carry a guitar on their travels. Now, however, a lot of electrical equipment is needed for large theatres.

Country music today remains much the same as before. One subject to which country music often returns is “the good old days”. In “the good old days” people thought well of each other. People loved life in the open air. They believed that the best things in life were free: sunshine, laughing, walks in the beauty of the country, friends and music.

1What do we know about American country music?

A. Country singers had a great interest in politics.

B. Country music is originally written for the black.

C. More musical instruments are used by country singers.

D. Televisions lead to the growing popularity of country music.

2Which of the following does modern American country music focus on?

A. Friendship. B. Love.

C. Power. D. Money.

3Country singers return to the subject of “the good old days” to ___________.

A. record their past achievements

B. remind people of American history

C. express their appreciation of a simple life

D. call on people to stay away from social problems

【题目】Walter Cavanagh has nearly 1,500 valid credit cards to his name and holds the Guinness record for the most credit cards.

Mr. Plastic Fantastic — a title given to him by Guinness World Records — is also the proud owner of the world’s longest wallet, which can hold about 800 cards. But he uses it only to carry a few cards, while the rest are safely kept in bank safe-deposit boxes.

Cavanagh started collecting credit cards in the late 1960s. “One of my best friends and I made a silly bet(打赌); the guy who could collect the most credit cards by the end of the year would win dinner,” he said. “I got 143 cards by the end of the year, and my friend collected 138.”

After winning that bet, Cavanagh decided to simply keep going with his unusual collection. He got credit cards from gas stations, airlines, bars, and even ice cream stores — all with kinds of limits, some as low as $50.

If there’s one card missing from Cavanagh’s collection, it’s that from the Newberry Group. They refused to give him a card in the early 1970s, even though he’d collected over 100 by then. They said he had too much credit. Therefore, so far he hasn’t had a Newberry card in his collection.

Cavanagh hasn’t stopped applying for new cards — he’s held the Guinness record since 1971 and has no intention of letting go of it. He copies whole pages from a U.S. directory(名录)of businesses and keeps sending applications. If he is refused, he writes back to the company explaining his goal. But he doesn’t count useless cards in his total collection.

Thanks to all the cards to his name, Cavanagh has access to about $1.7 million at any moment. Despite this privilege(特权), he has managed to achieve an excellent credit score.

The retired financial planner and credit expert has only one piece of advice to share: “Never use a card to buy anything you can’t pay off in a couple of months. If you don’t have the discipline, you shouldn’t have the cards.”

1When did Cavanagh begin to collect credit cards?

A. When he made a bet with his friend.

B. When he wanted to create a Guinness record.

C. When he owned a very long wallet.

D. When he was treated to dinner by his friend.

2Why hasn’t Cavanagh collected a Newberry card?

A. His given card got lost.

B. He wasn’t allowed to collect one.

C. His application was refused.

D. It isn’t worth collecting anyway.

3What does Cavanagh usually do when his application is refused?

A. He visits the company himself.

B. He tells the company his goal.

C. He chooses to let go of it.

D. He sends another application at once.

4What suggestion does Cavanagh give us in the last paragraph?

A. Never apply for a credit card.

B. Have the power to control ourselves.

C. Use credit cards as often as possible.

D. Collect more credit cards to show off.
