Carolyn is the mother of two boys, aged three and six. Her husband' s job requires him to be out of 1 for about three weeks out of four, and 2 she takes responsibility for the household as well as having a 3 job. She gets up at 6:30, showers, dresses, gets the children up and dresses them, and 4 breakfast. While they eat, she packs their lunch, finds their coats, and 5 the kitchen. At 7:45 they are on their way to the kindergarten, where she drops the three-year-old. By 8 am the 6 boy has joined the other children waiting for the 7 to open, and by 8:30 Carolyn is at her 8 in the downtown 9 of the Heart Association.

At 11 am, a day-care worker calls to say that Danny is 10 He wonders if 11 can pick him up. She arranges to take her 12 hour early, takes Danny home, and finds a neighbour who can stay with him 13 she gets home from work. She is 14 by 5, has the children in bed by 8, does an hour' s washing and mending and then has two 15 to herself before Danny wakes up, sick to his stomach. She 16 up with him twice during the 17 before the alarm goes off at 18 and she starts another 19 . Carolyn is typical of those 20 who feels caught between their traditional responsibility as wives and mothers and the responsibility of their newly won economic and emotional independence.

Dolphins are very clever. Its brain is even larger than a human's.Therefore, some people think a dolphin 9 smarter than a man, but 10 , brain size is not the only measure of cleverness.Besides, measuring dolphin's cleverness in other ways is not possible 11 men cannot talk with them. But we can almost 12 that dolphins can talk with each other. They make different 13 which seem to be at least a form of language.Up to now men 14 able to find out how dolphins are talking. So no one really knows what they are thinking. If we could talk with them, perhaps they could teach us to be 15 they seem to be.

Reading Comprehension

Cloze Test

Think you're good at reading people's expressions? Well, think again.New software is ten per cent better at it than the average person. There's even a device to improve your emotional intelligence.

Every time you interact with people, you 1 unconscious signals that you're following what they're saying. 2 , you might nod to show that you're following or squint(眯眼看)a bit to show that you've lost track. However, we're not very good at interpreting these signals. 3 we only get it right about half of the time.

Now social X-ray glasses can help you 4 some of these signals better by means of a built-in camera 5 to software which 6 facial expressions. The six basic 7 facial states it recognizes are:thinking, agreeing, concentrating, interested, confused and disagreeing. The device can read 24 'feature points' on a face and 8 which of these six general facial states is being 9 .You get the information via an earpiece, which tells you how the listener is responding. There's also a traffic light system displayed on the lens with a red, amber(yellowishbrown)or green light to show that the listener is interested, 10 interested or not interested. If it shows red, it's time to shut up!

The other novelty(something new)is sociometric badges. These are 11 to provide feedback on how often you're speaking, for how long and who with. Each person is represented by a dot, which is larger if you're talkative and smaller if not.If you speak in a monologue the dot will turn red, but if it's a dialogue it turns white. The interaction between speakers is represented by lines between them, so a thick line if two people speak a lot to each other and very thin if they 12 speak. The information is sent wirelessly to any device that can display it graphically. In one experiment, 13 some of the speakers started with very different dots, by the end of the experiment all the dots were more or less the same size and color, 14 that people had changed their behavior and made the interaction more even.

Think how differently our interactions with people could be if we could read their 15 to what we're saying with x-ray specs and track how well we work as a group with a sociometric badge! It's early days, but these devices may well transform how we interact with each other in the future.

Different systems of ballet training have developed, named after countries(Russia, France)or teachers(Italian dancer Enrico Cecchetti, Danish choreographer(舞蹈指导)August Bournonville). These systems, 1 , differ more in style and emphasis than in the actual 2 taught.

The best 3 to begin a serious study of ballet is eight to ten for girls; boys may begin somewhat later.Younger children may be harmed by the strenuous 4 demands of a ballet class, and older children gradually lose the 5 required to attain good results.Girls usually begin pointe(足尖舞)work after three years of training. 6 training is begun after the late teens, it is probably unrealistic to hope for a professional career.

7 dancers, no matter how experienced or proficient, take daily class to keep their bodies easy to bent and strong. Most ballet classes begin with exercises at the barre, a round horizontal bar that the dancer holds onto for support. These exercises 8 and stretch the muscles, work the tendons(腱,筋)to make them easily bent, and loosen the 9 .The second part of the class is done without the support of the barre and is called center practice. It usually begins with slow, sustained exercises that develop the dancer's sense of 10 and fluidity of movement.Slow exercises are followed by quick movements, beginning with small jumps and beats and progressing to large traveling steps, turns, and leaps.Class generally lasts an hour and a half.
