The health dangers of smoking have been well reported. For years, doctors have warned that
smoking can cause lung cancer. Studies also have linked smoking to several other kinds of cancer,
heart attacks and other diseases, lung diseases, and a number of other medical problems. The
repeated health warnings have had an effect. Thousands of people have stopped smoking. But as
many people have learned, stopping smoking can be very difficult.
A major problem apparently is the nicotine, a poisonous substance found in tobacco. Small
amounts of nicotine are released as tobacco is burned. And over many years of smoking, a person's
body becomes dependent on the substance. A try to stop smoking brings the problems of nicotine
withdrawal(脱瘾过程).
American medical researchers have found that nicotine withdrawal causes people to become angry
very easily, aggressive, worried and unable to think sharply. Many people who have tried to stop
smoking would confirm those findings.
To help people give up smoking, some tobacco companies have proposed chewing tobacco,
or using snuff as safe substitutes(替代物). Snuff is a tobacco powder that usually is breathed in.
But many people put it between their gum and cheek.
A group of British scientists said recently that many lives could be saved by a major program to
get cigarette smokers to change to snuff. An American scientist, Allan Blum, disagreed. Dr. Blum
argued that snuff, put in the mouth, can cause gum disease, teeth problems and throat problems that
lead to cancer. Dr. Blum also warned against chewing tobacco as a substitute for smoking. He said
chewing tobacco can lead to cancer of the mouth, throat or digestive system.
Medical researchers say another possible substitute for smoking is a special nicotine chewing gum.
The gum is already sold in Europe and Canada. A report says research shows that the chewing gum
will increase the amount of nicotine in a person's blood. This helps satisfy some people's desire for a
cigarette. However, the report says, the chewing gum also leads to some unpleasant side effects. And
it may be dangerous for people with heart problems.
Two other American scientists say they have found that the most effective way to stop smoking is
to do it completely, suddenly, all at once. The report by Saul Shirtman and Dr. Murray Jogbett says
that by stopping all at once, the worst problems of nicotine withdrawal are over in just a few days. But,
they say, by continuing to smoke, even a little less each day, the problems of withdrawal never end
completely.

“Happy New Year!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other on New Year’s Day. But it wasn’t always January 1 that marked the New Year.

At least 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields. This happened at the end of September.

The Babylonians held a festival in the spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.

The date January 1 was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January originates from the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.

In Vietnam, the New Year holiday happens in February. They buy fresh flowers and a peach blossom to put in their house, following the Vietnamese custom.

Thailand has its specific New Year’s date; it’s different from the normal calendar. The Thai New Year is celebrated on April 13. On this day, Thai people play with water, throwing it on each other. It is intended to bring good luck during the New Year ahead.

In China, the more favorable New Year is usually celebrated in February according to lunar calendar (阴历). On New Year’s Eve, all family members sit together at table, enjoying lots of auspicious foods such as dumplings, chicken to bring good luck.

Television, the most popular and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth – is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies.

The world “television”, derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (vision: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulse, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.

Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication.

The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad – based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is no broadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques.

Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBD, who have been the major purveyors(供应商)of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.

Waste to Energy—JUST BURN IT!

WHY BURN WASTE?

Waste-to-energy plants generate (产生) enough electricity to supply 2.4 million households in the US. But, providing electricity is not the major advantage of waste-to-energy plants. In fact, it costs more to generate electricity at a waste-to-energy plant than it does at a coal, nuclear, or hydropower plant.

The major advantage of burning waste is that it considerably reduces the amount of trash going to landfills. The average American produces more than 1,600 pounds of waste a year. If all this waste were landfilled, it would take more than two cubic yards of landfill space. That’s the volume of a box three feet long, three feet wide, and six feet high. If that waste were burned, the ashes would fit into a box three feet long, three feet wide, but only nine inches high!

Some communities in the Northeast may be running out of land for new landfills. And, since most people don’t want landfills in their backyards, it has become more difficult to obtain permits to build new landfills. Taking the country as a whole, the United States has plenty of open space, of course, but it is expensive to transport garbage a long distance to put it into a landfill.

TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN?

Some people are concerned that burning garbage may harm the environment. Like coal plants, waste-to-energy plants produce air pollution when the fuel is burned to produce steam or electricity. Burning garbage releases the chemicals and substances found in the waste. Some chemicals can be a threat to people, the environment, or both, if they are not properly controlled.

Some critics of waste-to-energy plants are afraid that burning waste will hamper (妨碍,阻碍) recycling programs. If everyone sends their trash to a waste-to-energy plant, they say, there will be little motive to recycle. Several states have considered or are considering banning waste-to-energy plants unless recycling programs are in place. Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York City have delayed new waste-to-energy plants, hoping to increase the level of recycling first.

So, what’s the real story? Can recycling and burning waste coexist? At first glance, recycling and waste-to-energy seem to be at odds (不一致), but they can actually complement (弥补) each other. That’s because it makes good sense to recycle some materials, and better sense to burn others.

Let’s look at aluminum, for example. Aluminum mineral is so expensive to mine that recycling aluminum more than pays for itself. Burning it produces no energy. So clearly, aluminum is valuable to recycle and not useful to burn.

Paper, on the other hand, can either be burned or recycled—it all depends on the price the used paper will bring.

Plastics are another matter. Because plastics are made from petroleum and natural gas, they are excellent sources of energy for waste-to-energy plants. This is especially true since plastics are not as easy to recycle as steel, aluminum, or paper. Plastics almost always have to be hand sorted and making a product from recycled plastics may cost more than making it from new materials.

To burn or not to burn is not really the question. We should use both recycling and waste-to-energy as alternatives to landfilling.

When young children are learning to ride a bicycle, they require that their parents hold on to the back
of the bike so that they gain confidence and won't fall off.
However, when children leave to go to college, or get married, parents must accept that their children
are riding off into their own future. At this time, parents shouldn't stand back and with the children gone,
they are left with an empty nest. How can parents get through this period of life?
The first thing you should do is nothing at all. You should actually take some time to rest since your
child was born. Just relax and reward yourself for the work you put into your child.
Taking some time for yourself will allow you to adjust to the change and figure out how you really feel
about your child's departure (离开). You shouldn't compare how you feel with how other people feel, as
everyone's experience of an empty nest is different.
Exercise is a great mood lifter. A physical fitness program may have been one of the first sacrifices (牺
牲) you made when your child came along; now, with fewer duties, you'll have time to hit the gym regularly.
If you have a friend who also has become an empty nester recently, you may have found a new companion.
Not only will you get the chance to share dealing with tips, you'll also create social opportunities for yourself,
which will get you out of that empty house if you need to. We all have those things that we say we'll do or
learn"someday".
If you're an empty nester, the "someday" might just be now. If you're not sure exactly what to do in all
your spare time, take your time and think about it. It will, however, probably be easier to figure out your
dream when you're out. Try exploring a nearby museum or attraction you've never visited.
Many parents may fear an empty nest because they worry that their little birds have flown away forever.
Try setting up a regular phone date with your child. A once-a-week call may make you feel satisfied while
giving your child a reasonable degree of freedom.
