Since Shanghai's average altitude is only 3 meters above sea level, Sheshan Hill, with its highest point at only 97 meters, is often jokingly termed a "mountain". If some people in the city say that they are going to climb a mountain in Shanghai, the destination will definitely be Sheshan Hill. As one of the earliest forest parks in Shanghai, Sheshan is a good place to free you from the hustle and bustle(熙熙攘攘) of the concrete forest.

Shanghai Sheshan National Holiday Resort is located at the northwest of Songjiang District, 30 kilometers away from downtown Shanghai. The East Sheshan Hill is 74 meters high and is famous for its bamboo shoots. In spring, there is a bamboo shoot festival. The park will provide tourists with tools to dig out the bamboo shoots, and if you like, you can take them home to cook the typical Shanghai dish --- bamboo shoot stewed(炖) with pork.

According to the records, Emperor Kangxi arrived in Songjiang and he was full of praise for the bamboo shoot for its tenderness, crispy and freshness, especially for its exclusive orchid fragrance, so he baptized Sheshan Hill "Orchid Bamboo Shoot Hill". Thereafter, the bamboo shoot was known all over the country.

Between the East and West Sheshan Hills a mid-air cable is constructed, which enable the tourists to have a hearty appreciation of the sceneries of the hills. Occupying an area of one hectare with a height of 20 meters, Sheshan Catholic Church (officially named China Holy Virgin Cathedral) was built in 1863 and rebuilt in 1935. It is famed as the second grandest church in East Asia. On Holy Virgin's Day every May, pilgrims swarm here from all places in the country to line up in long queues in entering the church for mass(弥撒). It is really a spectacular occasion.

Astronomical observatory(天文台) is the other famous architecture on the hill. It serves as one of the major observatories in the observatory network in the country. The building of observatory library now also serves as an observatory museum.

Today, I’m going to talk about the invention of the camera and photography. The camera is often thought to be a modern invention. But as early as 1727, a German physicist discovered that light darkened silver salt, a chemical compound. Using as a camera, a big box with a small hole to let the light in, he made temporary images on the salt. Silver salt is still the base of film today.

Then a French scientist made the first permanent picture by using a special piece of metal sensitized(使…具感光力)with silver salt. A photograph he made in 1826 still exists. The painter Daguerre improved on the process by placing common salt, the kind we eat, on the metal. This was in 1839, the official date of the beginning of photography.

But the problem was the printing of the photographs. And it was not until other scientists developed the kind of paper we now use that good printing was possible and photography became truly common. In the 1860s, Mathew Brady was able to take his famous pictures of the American Civil War, thus making portrait poses very popular.

In the 20th century, George Eastmen of the United States simplified film-developing film, and Dr. Edwin Land invented the so-called instant camera with self-developing film. If we say that the photography came into existence in 1839, it follows that it has taken more than one hundred years for the camera to reach the present condition of technical refinement(密度).

I just mailed the chicken and the egg, each in its own separate packaging, and kept careful track of when each shipment was sent from a post office in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and when it later arrived at its intended destination in New York City.
In mailing the chicken, I was careful to stick to the restrictions described in the American Postal Service’s Domestic Mail Manual 57. This version of the Manual states that:
“Adult chickens must be sent by Express Mail. The containers used must pass the standards in International Safe Transit Association Test Procedure 1A; be strong enough to endure normal handling; and the number of birds must not be more than the container’s limit.”
I mailed the chicken in a wooden box got from a colleague who does research with birds, and mailed the egg in standard packaging obtained through an industrial supplier.
I posted both the chicken and the egg at 9:40 am, on a Monday morning, from the Harvard Square post office, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The staff there told me that this was the first chicken anyone had mailed from there in recent memory, and perhaps ever.
The intended destination for both packages was the James A. Farley General Post Office, which is located in Manhattan right next to Penn Station.
I took the subway from Harvard Square to the Boston train station, and from there boarded a train to New York City, a distance of about 320 kilometres, arriving that afternoon at Penn Station. I immediately went to the post office, to await the arrivals of the chicken and the egg.
The James A. Farley General Post Office is open 24 hours a day, so I was able to wait there until both items arrived.
That day, Monday, neither the chicken nor the egg arrived. The next day, Tuesday, neither the chicken nor the egg arrived.
The chicken arrived at 10:31 am, Wednesday. The staff at the post office told me that this was the first chicken anyone had mailed to the post office in recent memory, and perhaps ever. The egg arrived that same day, at 9:37 pm, 11 hours after the chicken.
So, it’s now quite clear that the chicken came first, the egg second.
