A lot of people wonder why so many Chinese children are maths geniuses and musical prodigies(神童). Amy Chua explains why in her Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. 1. Born in the United States to Chinese immigrant parents, Chua married a man who she met at Harvard University, and when their two daughters were born she was determined that they would be as successful as she was.

Her system had strict rules. Her two daughters were expected to be number one in every subject. Playing with friends and TV was forbidden. Music was compulsory. 2.From a very early age her daughters Sophia and Lulu were outstanding pupils and musical prodigies. Chua chose maths and music for her daughters, but it seems that they could have excelled in anything. “There’s no musical talent in my family”, she says, “it’s just hard work.”

Eventually Chua realized that she was pushing her daughters too hard. 3.After a series of violent arguments, Chua decided to give her daughters a little more freedom, and Lulu immediately gave up violin lessons and took up tennis. Later Sophia was even allowed to go to a rap concert.

Many people have been shocked by the book. Chua spent much of her daughters’ childhood shouting at them and criticizing every mistake they made. 4.Sophia said that she herself chose to accept the system, and after the book was published she wrote an article defending her mother. Lulu says that although she no longer wants to be a violinist, she still loves playing the violin. 5.Sophia is now studying law at Harvard, and Lulu is doing well at high school and winning tennis trophies.

A. “They are a mystery to me.” Chua says.

B. The system seemed at first to be working.

C. In fact, she is glad her mother made her learn.

D. However, the girls do not seem to be upset about their mother.

E. At 13 Sophia played a piano solo at the Carnegie Hall in New York.

F. It is a book which caused controversy among parents when it was published.

G. Lulu had always rebelled the most, and when she was 13 she refused to co-operate at all.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (麦片粥), eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace (丢脸) because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout (辍学者).

She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I’m now trying to bring up my three children. I’m filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.

City people usually think they are a lot smarter than country people. They often laugh at simple country ways. But people do not laugh at country music. It is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today.

Perhaps it is so popular because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events—love, sadness, good times and bad times, it tells real life stories and sounds the way people really talk. As life becomes more and more complicated(复杂的), it is good to hear music about ordinary people.

Country music, sometimes called country western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the West. The singers usually play the guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars.

At first city people said country music was low-class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War Ⅱ, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned to like country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.

Today country music is popular everywhere in the United States and Canada, in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. People sing it in their languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor farmers is now popular all over the world.
