Section One

The city is an accumulation of human civilization. Just as the American social philosopher (哲学家) Lewis Mumford put it, it is a special system which, fine and compact, has been designed to preserve the fruits of human civilization. Many Western languages have developed their versions of the term “civilization” from the same Latin (拉丁语的) word “civitas”(meaning “city” ), and it is by no means a coincidence. The city has played a significant role in the perfection of order in human society.

The basic structure of the Chinese character “人” in which each stroke supports each other also shows the concept that the beautiful life should depends on mutual-help. If the human are willing to support one another, the harmony among human, nature, and society will be available. Such an urban life will be nice.

The tea gardens in Sri Lanka are actually large estates(种植园). The best tea usually comes from plants grown on high grounds, the cool hilltops with rows and rows of tea plants. The plants are about one metre apart. The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimetres high. Pruning is important because it encourages the growth of tender shoots, or young leaves. It is from these shoots that the best tea is got.

Practically all the tea pickers are women. The estates prefer to employ women pickers because they are more careful. Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves and new shoots from the plant, which are the parts used for processing(加工) tea. The pickers carry large baskets into which they throw their pickings. A skilled worker can harvest between 9 to 14 kilogrammes of tea leaves a day. Usually new shoots can be picked from the plants about every ten or fifteen days.

Processing tea shoots into the familiar dry tea leaves requires great care and skill .There are various methods of processing depending on the type of tea required .For black tea ,the young green leaves are first spread out o shelves to dry. This process removes much of its water and the leaves become soft. After this ,the leaves are passed through heavy rollers .This operation will press the leaves for juices which give the tea both its colour and taste .Then the leaves are spread out on floors and left to ferment (发酵)under wet conditions. Fermentation develops the rich taste of black tea .The fermented leaves are then dried with a hot-air blower until they become rolled-up black leaves .The final step is to sort and grade them before the black tea is ready for sale to countries all over the world.

After so much discussion — featured by intense media attention and China's repeated warnings — US President Barack Obama finally met the Dalai Lama at the White House on Thursday. With this latest move to test China's limit of tolerance, Obama has hit a home run to complete his months-long season of a game called "antagonizing (敌对的) China". At least we hope so. After all the recent tensions in Sino-US relations, a half-time break is what both sides desperately need. But it is still too early to have a sigh of relief.

Thanks to his vow to "get much tougher" with China, Obama has struck nearly every note to create the cacophony (嘈杂的声音) against a country that he once promised not to contain. From the US$6.4 billion arms sales to Taiwan to issues related to currency rates and Internet freedom, Obama has criticized China in every possible front. So much that no one can say for sure whether China-US relationship is strong enough to survive all the damages done. It is up to Washington to show its sincerity to begin again the work of repairing the damaged relations.

It usually takes some time for US leaders to learn the rules of their China policy.

Bill Clinton had argued that Washington "should not reward China with improved trade status when it has ... failed to make sufficient progress on human rights". George W. Bush had pledged to do "whatever it took" to defend Taiwan. But it did not take them long to come to terms with reality. China, with a quarter of the world's population and a fast growing economy, means a lot to the US and the world. It does both sides absolutely no good if the two countries collide rather than cooperate. It would have been foolish not to understand this at an early date. In a speech Obama made during his visit to Shanghai in November last year, Obama quoted a Chinese proverb "consider the past, and you shall know the future". Hopefully he really knows what he quoted.

56. What is the most appropriate title according to the passage?

A. US should spare no efforts to defeat antagonizing China

B. President Obama finally met the Dalai Lama

C. All the previous US Presidents didn’t have good terms with China

D. US should move to repair China ties after Dalai meeting

57. What does the underlined word “collide” in the last paragraph probably mean?

A. work together     B. help each other     C. contradict        D. blame

58. From Paragraph 2 we can see Obama’s attitude towards China is getting tougher. Of all the things he did, which of the following is NOT included?

A. Personal donation to Taiwan                B. Arms sales to Taiwan

C. Issues related to currency rates              D. Internet freedom

59. According to the passage, why did the US leaders come to terms with reality?

A. Because China has the largest population in the world and is the largest market.

B. Because China’s economy develops so fast that it gives US more and more help.

C. Because China’s amazing growth makes US Presidents adjust their policies.

D. Because US Presidents are more clever than leaders in any other countries.

60. What does Obama’s quotation during his visit to Shanghai last year “consider the past, and you shall know the future” mean?

      A. History proves US will respect its competitor in the long run.

      B. It will be some time before US gives in to China in the end.

      C. US Presidents daren’t face the reality and are not willing to either.

      D. The future of US will be disappointing in comparison with China.

For the most part, schools are designed to produce people who fit into society, not people who set out to change it. However, schools, particularly universities, may not only spread culture; they may add to the cultural heritage (遗产). Today American society places a good deal of emphasis on the development of new knowledge, especially in the physical and biological sciences, medicine, and engineering. In recent years, the nation’s leading universities have increasingly become research centres.

An emphasis on research has led universities to judge professors not by abilities as teachers, but as researchers. Promotions, salary increases, and other benefits have long been dependent on research and publication (出版物). However, the most important is no longer publishing. To be successful these days, professors have to bring in money provided by government and private industry. Critics claim that academic success is most likely to come to those who have learned to “ignore” their teaching duties to pursue research activities. Defenders say that even when students themselves are not involved in research projects they benefit from such an emphasis on research.

Major research universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have also cooperated with industrial companies to develop technology and products with commercial potential. With university-industry ties continuing to grow, debate has increased about the consequences for basic science, academic openness, the control of information, the direction of research, and the influence on students.

59. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT emphasized by today’s American society?

61. Supporters of the present emphasis on research argue that ______.

A. it involves more students in it

B. it does good to students anyway

C. it has a direct good effect on teaching

The fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us understand our feeling about color. If they sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected by color without knowing it.

Salesmen have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings(包装), that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste, and that cosmetics(化妆品) should never be packed in brown. Their discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology(心理学). Some of our preferences(偏爱) for colors are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people’s mind. People in bright red surroundings show an increase in breathing speed, heartbeat and blood pressure; red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a close study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars.

56. The passage tells us that salesmen have __________.

       A. discovered the relationship between color and psychology

       B. tried out colors on blind people

       C. found out that color affect sales

       D. developed a special subject of color psychology

57. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

       A. what color we prefer depends on our state of mind

       B. foods sell well in green or blue wrappings

       C. blind people cannot sense color difference

       D. a bright yellow has exactly the opposite effect to red

58. If people are exposed to(置身于) pure blue, _________.

       A. their blood pressure rises

       B. they want to taste blue foods

       C. they will feel like buying things

       D. they won’t easily feel nervous

59. The most effective color in the passage for warning people is _______.

       A. red            B. dark blue           C. bright yellow            D. green

60. Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage?

       A. Colors and sales                      B. Colors and feelings

       C. The blind and colors                D. Preferences for colors

The most intensive period of speech and language development for humans is during the first three years of life, a period when the brain is developing and maturing. These skills appear to develop best in a world that is rich with sounds, sights, and consistent(一致的,协调的,相容的)exposure(揭发)to the speech and language of others.

There is increasing evidence suggesting that there are "critical periods" for speech and language development in infants and young children. This means that the developing brain is best able to absorb a language, any language, during this period. The beginning signs of communication occur during the first few days of life when an infant learns that a cry will bring food, comfort, and companionship.  As they grow, infants begin to sort out the speech sounds (phonemes) or building blocks that compose the words of their language. Research has shown that by six months of age, most children recognize the basic sounds of their native language

As the speech mechanism (jaw, lips, and tongue) and voice mature, an infant is able to make controlled sound. By six months of age, an infant usually babbles or produces repetitive syllables such as "ba, ba, ba" or "da, da, da." By the end of their first year, most children have mastered the ability to say a few simple words. Children are most likely unaware of the meaning of their first words, but soon learn the power of those words as others respond to them.

By eighteen months of age, most children can say eight to ten words. By age two, most are putting words together in crude sentences such as "more milk." During this period, children rapidly learn that words symbolize or represent objects, actions, and thoughts. At this age they also engage in representational or pretend play. At ages three, four, and five, a child's vocabulary rapidly increases, and he or she begins to master the rules of language.

49.According to the passage, which of the statements is NOT true?

A.The developing brain is best able to absorb any language.

B.The beginning signs of communication occur during the first few days of life.

C.By six months of age, all children recognize the basic sounds of their native language.

D.By 2, children rapidly learn that words symbolize or represent objects, actions, and thoughts.

50.We can infer from the passage that______

A.by six months of age, an infant must babble or produce repetitive syllables

B.by their first year, most children are most likely aware of the meaning of their first words

C.by 2, children rapidly learn that words symbolize or represent objects, actions, and thoughts

D.the brain development is critical to develop children’s speech and language ability

51.That there are “critical periods” for speech and language development in infants and young children means ______.

A.that children are so young that it is easy for them to study

B.that the developing brain is best able to absorb a language, any language

C.that the children are eager to learn the language

D.that we must take care of children

52.In Paragraph 3, the underlined word “mechanism” can be replaced by ______

A.organs          B.skills            C.abilities          D.habits
