In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism-the differences among the people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work on their own and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.

In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history and culture. Perhape for this reason, the educational system in these Asian countries reflects society's belief in group goals and purpose rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignment(作业).

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more maths and science than American students do by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven't memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

1.Why do American teachers stress the importance of individualism?

[ ]

A.Because they are required to do so by the government of the United States.

B.Because the students in the United States are too lazy to memorize any information.

C.Because the United States is a country of many different cultures, religions.

D.Because the students in the United States works individually.

2.Which of the following is most likely to be a description of Asian methods of education?

[ ]

A.Each student in the classroom draws a different picture.

B.Students have to find information and the answers to the questions by themselves.

C.Students are prepared for a society that values discipline.

D.Teacher serve as a guide in discussion.

3.We can learn from the passage that the author might believe ________.

[ ]

A.different educational systems are based on the development level of different countries

B.students from Western countries are creative but selfish

C.Asian students are merely interested in maths and science

D.the two different educational systems could be combined together

4.In this passage the author mainly discusses ________.

[ ]

A.how Western school systems mirror the value of individualism

B.the advantages and disadvantages of the two educational system

C.what Asian schools should do to make students more creative

D.the differences in culture, religion, etc, between the east and west

答案:C;C;D;B
解析:

  1.C 根据文中第一句可以断定人们在这样的国家是非常注重个性的发展的。

2.C 从第二段对周围国家的描述如“The educational system in these Asian countries reflects society's belief in group goals and purpose rather than individualism.”可知亚洲的教育注重群体目标,协同完成作业,因此,只有C项与其描述一致。

  3.D 此题需要考生进行深层次的推理。在短文的最后两段中分别阐述了亚洲及北美国家教育体制的advantage和disadvantage,尤其在最后介绍了北美国家教育制度后的一句话“There is,however,a disadvantage,when students…as students in other countries have.”更加明确地表明作者的写作意图。

  4.B 此题是考查考生判断主旨大意题。在作者介绍了在亚洲和北美国家的教育制度的不同后,作者用了大量的笔墨来阐述各自教育制度的利弊。

CBC is a famous air company which has over twenty planes carrying passengers and goods, flying
along 12 fixed lines all over the world. Its service is very good but some passengers are still not satisfied
with it and that is why in 1998 and 1999 the company received letters of complaints(投诉) from consumers
or passengers who pointed out over a dozen kinds of problems which are divided in groups in the following
table. This division is called Category. Problems that appear when the plane is flying are Flight problems.
Those about passengers' things carried by the plane are Baggage problems. Customer service refers to
service work which passengers are not satisfied with. Over sales of seats are about the fact that more seats
are sold and as a result the plane is too crowded to be safe. Refund problems appear when passengers fail
to receive the money paid to them because of what they have lost. Fares are problems about the price of
tickets. Reservations are problems that appear when passengers could not get the tickets they have already
booked. Tours are problems about the passengers'traveling by air or hotel problems. Advertising is what the
passengers think about advertisement on the plane. Credit problems are about the use of credit cards.
