Good news: stress brought on by day-to-day events can actually help your health, and may even extend your life. Skeptical? So were we—recent studies have linked short-term stress to a reduced risk of a wide variety of diseases, including cancer.

The results seem incredible: after all, don’t we usually hear that high blood pressure and heart attacks are often brought on by stress? For people with constantly stressful jobs, or difficult family situations, that is indeed the case. But incidents of short-term stress that are quickly resolved have the opposite effect, inspiring the body to quickly repair itself.

Periodic bursts of stress won’t just help you recover more quickly from illnesses. It stands to reason that it would slow down aging.

So how can you make sure that you're enduring the right sort of stress? Here are the tips:

1. Keep track of your stress level on a 1–10 scale each day.

If it comes in at 5 or higher for two straight days, make some time to take part in relaxing activities that you enjoy.

2. Have an adventure.

New and exciting activities can stimulate short bursts of stress, which will have a positive effect on your body.

3. Create a "What-I've-done" list.

Make sure that you remind yourself of your accomplishments regularly to lighten your mood.

4. Try new sensations.

Try the spiciest dish that you can handle and it's a great way to kick-start your immune system into overdrive.

5. __________________.

You don't need to run a marathon to see the effects—any exercise that makes you sweat will give you the stress you need to fix the damage in your body.

As nanny(保姆), cook, cleaner, shopper, driver, and gardener, she has one of the most demanding jobs in Britain today. And paying someone else to do the chores(家务活) which take the average housewife 71 hours a week would cost ?349.

At over ?18,000 a year that’s more than the earnings of 70 percent of the population, including train drivers, firemen, prison officers, and social worker. Looking after a baby less than a year old takes a housewife into a even higher pay league. According to a study, she earns ?457 a week – at nearly ?24,000 a year, the same as teachers, engineers, and chemists.

Researchers put a price on each chore, then tried to find out how long the average person takes doing them. They found housewives spend an average 70.7 hours a week on housework – with looking after the children (17.9hours) and cooking and cleaning (12.9 hours each) the most time-consuming(费时).

A wife with a part-time job still works and average of 59 hours a week at home. Those in full-time employment put in longer hours at home than in the workplace. The good news is that these hours sharply decrease as children get older. While the average mother with child under one puts in 90 hours weekly, the figure drops to 80 hours from one to four and to 66 hours from five to ten.

Mother-of-four Karen Williams from London said, “Paying the housewives may not be practical, but the government should recognize the value of housework, perhaps through the tax. Running a house takes a lot of time and most husbands don’t understand this. For example, my husband only puts a shelf up now and again. He never cleans the kitchen – that’s the real test.”

Happiness is U-shaped, for we are happier at the start and end of our lives but hit a slump when we are middle-aged, British and US researchers say.

Economists from the University of Warwick, central England, and from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, looked at data on the mental health of two million people from 80 countries.

In Britain, the probability of depression for men and women peaks at around 44 years of age, Warwick University said in a press release.

In the United States, though, there was a big difference between men and women.

Among women, unhappiness peaked at around the age of 40, whereas among men, it was about 50.

But the U-shape of happiness is constant around the world, and mid-life depression takes place  regardless of marital status, changes in job or income.

The study appears in Social Science & Medicine, published by the Dutch publishing house Elsevier.

"It happens to men and women ,to single and married people, to rich and poor and to those with and without children." said co-author Andrew Oswald.

One possibility may be that people realize they  won't achieve many of their aspirations at middle age, the researchers said.

Another reason could be that after seeing their fellow middle-aged peers begin to die, people begin to value their own remaining years and embrace life once more.

But the good news is that if people make it to aged 70 and are still physically fit, they are on average as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year old.

"For the average persons in the modern world, the dip in mental health and happiness comes on slowly, not suddenly in a single year," Oswald said. "Only in their fifties do people emerge from this low period,"

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

No wonder English poses (构成) such a challenge to non-native speakers. This most global of languages has more words than any other, over 1 million according to the Global Language Monitor. Out of this number, the average American college student has mastered between 8,000-15,000.

Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up. They make out long lists of words – often in alphabetical order – and simply memorize their definitions(释义) and Chinese meanings.

The bad news is that definition memorization does them little good when it comes to college entrance tests like the SATs. For these tests, a student needs to understand, not simply parrot words studied.

The good news is that there are better ways to build an academic English vocabulary.

   Vocabulary learning system

The first thing to do is to develop an organized, but easy means of collecting and learning new words. We recommend a card system that includes the following information:

Word – Simple Definition in English – Phrase or Sentence – Related Words – Synonyms (同义词) and Antonyms (反义词) – with a Chinese translation on the reverse (背面) of the card.

The advantage of this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word but a group of related words.

Keep your cards on a detachable (可分离的) metal ring, so you can carry them around and add to your collection daily.
