Rate(%):________

On July 1, 1859, four men, abundantly supplied with provisions, started on a trip by balloon from St.Louis to New York.At 7∶30, in the presence of thousands of spectators, the cords that kept the balloon earthbound were cut, and with considerable velocity it ascended to the height of two miles.Taking an easterly direction, it passed, in the course of the night and much of the next day, over Lake Erie and Niagara Falls. As it neared Lake Ontario the balloon encountered a hurricane, lost its ascending power, and rapidly sank toward the water. The provisions and some of the passengers’ clothing were tossed overboard. The balloon finally reached the shore, having traveled for 50 miles, just above the surface of the water. Here they were dragged over trees, hills and rocks, with their lives endangered every moment. Not one of them ever expected to reach the ground alive.

The whole distance traveled was 1200 miles, and the time taken to accomplish the journey was 19 hours, averaging a mile a minute.

One of the passengers, Mr.Wise, is perfectly satisfied with the success of the experiment, and believes that the Atlantic Ocean can be crossed by balloon. It is his intention to attempt such a voyage to England in the near future.Should he do so, there are few persons optimistic enough to believe he will succeed in his venture.

Time(minutes):________

Words:300

Speed(per minute)________

Rate(%):________

Why do people in all countries ride in buses to school, to work and to far places?Buses can go where trains and airplanes cannot. They do not cost as much to travel on.Even though they may not move as fast as airplanes and trains, they sometimes take people between two places faster. This is because they may travel a more direct way, or may leave more often, or at better times.

City and town buses carry people for short distances. The seats of these are close together, and there is standing room as well. Most city buses have two doors so that people can get on and off quickly.

Long distance buses go from state to state or country to country. They give people the chance to travel across huge stretches of land. These buses have comfortable seats that can be moved to different positions. They have places to store suitcases. Many have washrooms. All these things are important on a long trip.

I had always planned to take a tour of Yosemite, and I finally fulfilled my dream last December.I cannot help but express how much I enjoyed my tour of Yosemite.

As the best-known scenic spot, Yosemite National Park is actually a natural wonder. The park is located in the middle of the Nevada mountain range. It has huge rocks, great waterfalls and fantastic valleys.

I really need to thank my tour guide, Tony.He was very helpful and he told me a lot of interesting facts about the scenic spots we saw.As I couldn't drive, the tour guide was also my driver. He picked me up at 8 o'clock in the morning. He was a professional and experienced tour guide, so he tried everything to make sure that I had an interesting and relaxing tour.As he was driving, he kept on telling me about the wildlife and the unique scenery in this surprising land.

Bridalveil Fall was our first stop. The best time to see it is in summer, but I didn't go there in the hot season, so the waterfall was not as good as it could have been.I still took a photo of myself standing in front of this terrific waterfall before leaving for my next stop. When I first saw El Capitan, the largest standing sandstone structure in the world, I knew why it was called “El Capitan”.The huge structure dwarfed(使矮小)everything around it.Though I was used to seeing skyscrapers, nothing had prepared me for this.

I felt so happy and excited after I came back from Yosemite.I haven't had this feeling for a very long time.Happiness usually comes when we do activities that accomplish something, which is a deep feeling of joy that often lasts a long time.So I decided to go out for a trip constantly to make myself happy and relaxed.

A couple of years ago, before a trip to China,Nicole Davis and her US women’s volleyball teammates were warned about the prominence (显著、突出) of coach “Jenny” Lang Ping in her native country.

“I was pushed over by Chinese journalists while I was just trying to put my luggage on the bus,”said Davis.

Lang’s victory.”

Lang said she just tried to stay professional when the two teams meet.“It doesn’t matter if we play China or any other team. It’s the same.” Lang said.

Davis said she and her teammates could not have imagined the passion for volleyball among Chinese because the sport was lack of popularity in the US. The reception from Chinese fans has touched the US players, said US volleyball player Lindsey Berg.
