Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.

While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions(伙伴) than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.

The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.

Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.

Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.

The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees. “We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.

1.How are social robots different from household robots?

A. They can control their emotions.

B. A tour guide.

C. A shop assistant.

D. A private nurse.

In life, we should try to combine both money and happiness together. To do this I suggest the following steps:

Consider the Importance of Simplicity(简朴)

The aim of life should not be to control as many belongings and as much wealth as possible. If you feel happiness is directly related to material belongings, you are making a mistake. We should learn to be pleased with what we have and appreciate the advantages of simplicity.

Do Not Take Money Too Seriously

Does it pain you to spend your own money—even if it is for something useful? The problem with this, however, is that if we are always unwilling to spend money, we miss the whole point of making it. We should look at money in this way: spending money enables more to come into our lives. It is no good saving a large amount of water unless we use it to produce power; similarly, it is no use accumulating savings if we feel unwilling to spend them.

Reduce Financial(财政的) Worries to the Lowest Degree

We will be happy if we can make money a small part of our lives. To be able to do this, we need to prevent creating situations of debt(负债) as getting out of debt can be difficult and stressful. If you do need to go into debt, plan ahead and find a loan(贷款) which is clear and manageable to repay. Try not to make risky investment plans, as these give you the possibility to gain more as well as to lose a lot more.

Do Not Live to Work

If you spend all your time working, you will have no opportunity to spend your money. Don't feel guilty about turning extra work down; it is also important to have a rest. It is good if we can feel pleased with work, but if we only spend time working then our lives will be short of a proper balance.

8. your work and rest

●Give yourself 9. to enjoy your life as much as possible

Animals have been used, and sometimes abused(虐待), in movie-making since the early days of the industry. However, the American Humane Association has worked for many years to protect animals in films. And, the digital age might make animal actors unnecessary.

The new film “Dolphin Tale” tells about a dolphin that loses her tail because of an injury from a crab-trap. A doctor provides her with an artificial tail that saves her life. The film is based on a real event. And the star of the film, Winter, is a real dolphin that lost her tail. The American Humane Society worked with the movie’s makers to make sure Winter stayed safe and healthy during filming. The animal protection group does this for all animal actors in America.

A thick book of rules and guidelines tells Hollywood moviemakers how to treat animals. Karen Rosa leads the American Humane Society’s film and television group. He said, “Everything from the smallest insect to the largest mammal shall be protected. We believe that for the sake of entertainment, everybody should go home alive.

This was not always the policy in the early days of film. In 1939, a horse was forced off a mountain, falling to his death, in the movie “Jesse James.” The next year, guidelines were established to guarantee safe and healthy conditions for animals in movies.

A new film “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” tells about the creation of super intelligent apes through science. However, no real animals were among the performers. Computer generated imagery provided the chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans that movie goers see. Clare Richardson is the president of the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund. She says computer generated imagery should decrease the use of animals in the film industry. She praises movie makers for the use of computer-made animals.

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins(维生素) to water without vitamins even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor was added to the vitamins-enriched water, the rats did seem to develop it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.

In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement, with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but over a period of time they managed to select well-balanced diet.

So, in choosing food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long-formed habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.

1.In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rats’ drinking water to _________.

A. test whether rats know which drink is good for them

B. encourage rats to drink vitamins-enriched water

C. find out rats’ preference in flavor

D. demonstrate the vitamins are tasteless

2.According to the passage, adults eating habits differ from those of babies because _________.

A. adults know better than babies what kind of food are good for their health

B. adults’ eating habits are closely related to the social and cultural customs

C. adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns

D. adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious foods

3.As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that ________.

A. both prefer flavored food and drink

B. both have the same eating patterns

C. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet

D. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors

One of my neighbors used to have a beautiful tree in her front yard. Her dad had planted it for her when it was nothing more than a twig and several years later it started to shoot towards the sky with amazing speed. Soon it blessed her with cooling shade in the summer and glorious, golden leaves in the fall.

When the two-day snowstorm struck our town, heavy snow fell on the tree’s branches that were still full of leaves. The weight split that lovely tree down the middle. It was so sad seeing half of it laying on the ground after the storm. When I talked to my neighbor later, she said that the damage had been too much and that the entire tree would have to be cut down. Thankfully she had saved a few saplings(树苗) from it that she hoped to replant in the future.

Still, it was a shock to drive by her house the other day and see nothing but a stump in her front yard. I missed that tree. I missed its beauty, its leaves shinning in the afternoon sun. I missed seeing its limbs reach towards the heavens. I thought that the stump would be a sad reminder of its loss for a long time to come. My wonderful neighbor, though, had another plan. When I drove by her home today I saw a tiny bird feeder sitting on that stump and a colorful songbird having its dinner. It was such an affirmation of life. It was such a joy to see. I could feel my heart smile.

Life by its very nature is a mixed bag. It hands us both beauty and tragedy, love and loss, pleasure and pain. What we do with it, however, is up to us. We can let it split us in two, or we can use even its hardest times to make our souls stronger and our hearts more loving. We can spend it complaining or we can use it to help others.

1.We know from the first paragraph that _____.

A. the tree grew very slowly.

B. the tree showed its beauty and benefits.

C. the author’s neighbor was good at planting trees.

D. the tree was so strong that it could bear any weight.

2.The author’s neighbor left a stump in her front yard to use it as_____.

A. a good reminder.

B. a seat after dinner.

C. a place to feed birds.

D. a beautiful sculpture.

3.What does the author mainly want to show in the passage?

A. Life has beauty and tragedy.

B. Life consists of pain and suffering.

C. Life should be pleasant rather than painful.

D. Life is determined by our attitude towards it.
