Two students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have managed to develop a banana piano. Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum were looking for a way of turning everyday things into keyboards. They have developed a piece of equipment called MakeyMakey that can turn fruit, animals and even humans into keyboards. Mr. Rosenbaum said the idea behind the equipment was to get people to see the world around them as a collection of kits(原件).
When asked about safety matters, Mr. Rosenbaum said the electric current used in the equipment was very small and harmless to the human bodies and animals. He said fuses(保险丝)had been included into board as well as the USB port(接口)to make sure it was safe.
Mr. Silver said many things in our daily life can be used in their experiment. Even his cat became part of the experiment. According to Mr. Rosenbaum they have managed to turn two of his friends into sound machines, a beach ball into a game controller and have used a cup of milk to make music.
Around 150 kits have been experienced by test-users. AnnMarie Thomas, lived in Minneapolis, was among the first ones to try it. She said even her four-year-old daughter had managed to use the equipment without any help. “My kids love it. My daughter was able to set it up. She has tried many other toys and has even managed to turn herself into the keyboard.” Ms. Thomas, a former scientist of engineering, whose job is to train future engineering teachers, thought the equipment could be quite useful to teachers and students. “It is a great way to encourage kids to love science and technology,” she said. “It helped my daughter understand how science and technology may change the world.
