     Finally, there is the evolution of Yao's mind. He has become a wise man who has devoted time and
money into life after the NBA.
     Yao said he did not only see his investment in the current CBA system in purely financial terms, but
also as a way to support the development of basketball in China and return the favour to Shanghai for
looking after him in his early days.
     A few days before our most recent interview, Yao was asked to attend an award ceremony for top
athletes in China. He realised his superstar friends and fellow athletes were often forced to take lowpaying jobs because they had little formal education.
     As boss of the Shanghai Sharks, Yao has invited both teachers and mentors to help his players better
manage their financial futures.
     Another of Yao's problems has been balancing the knowledge he has gained in the NBA with the
traditions of home.
     As head of the Sharks he has to consider what's best for his team, even if it means hurting some of his
closest friends. Like his first coach, Li Qiuping, who was in hospital when Yao told him he was going to
have to replace him with an American coach.
     Navigating traditional Chinese society, he said, can be tricky at times. He sometimes wistfully thinks
back to his early days, when he just played basketball. Even so, he never shies away from the challenge.
     When I think about these aspects of Yao's life, I admire him as an example of someone who is
downtoearth and has not let fame go to his head.
      As Yao will enter a new phase in his life, his 30s, fatherhood, returning to the NBA, and the next step
in his career as manager, he shows the courage to make a difference in the world.

　　By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder (蝰蛇). In Scotland, in fact, there are no other kinds of poisonous snakes. It can be found almost anywhere, but it prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all.

　　Most people regard snakebites as deadly, but not an bites are serious, and very few are deadly. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with someone heroically, but mistakenly, trying do - it - yourself surgery and other unnecessary measure.

　　All shakes have small teeth, so it follows that all shakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them .The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the way as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close.

　　The effect of a bite varies considerable. It depends upon several things, One of which is the body - weight of person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison.

　　Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many eases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness.

Jupiter's Moons and How They Travel

　　The many moons of Jupiter travel around the planet in different directions.

　　Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Over the years, scientists have found that Jupiter has its own small solar sys tem. Earth has one moon. Jupiter has at least sixteen and probably more.

　　Since there were so many moons, scientists began to number them. The numerals ( numbers ) tell the sequence, or order, in which the moons were found. They were slower to name the moons. All of Jupiter's moons raw have a name as well as a number.

　　The first five moons to be discovered are known as the “inner moons”. But they are not the closest to the planet. The closest is only 127600 kilometers away from Jupiter. All the inner moos circle the planet in courtier-clockwise direction, that is, opposite of the hands of a clock.

     Within a few short years, girls in Europe have be－come heavier smokers than boys according to a
British study presented (递交) last week to an international conference on smoking.
     Antismoking activists (积极分子) at the second Tobacco or Health conference in the Canary Islands
pointed out that while adults were giving up smoking in ever growing numbers, more and more young
people were taking up the habit, particularly girls.
     One in four 15-year-olds is a regular smoker, according to a study made in 27 countries in Europe
and the United States, Canada and Israel-by Edinburgh University together with the World Health
Organization.
     In Western Europe, girls were more likely than boys to smoke. In Germany or in England, one third of
the girls were smokers compared to one in four boys. In Eastern Europe, the girls "still fall behind" those in the Western Europe, but were "catching up" quickly, said the study.
     The study dealt with the behavior of 15-year-olds in seven European countries over four-year period
between 1986 and 1998.
     The percentage of young women smoking went from 17 percent to 36 percent in Austria, from 17
percent to 28 percent in Norway, from 21 percent to 28 percent in Hungary.
     In the seven countries and regions-Austria, Fin－land, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and
Wales-more girls smoked than boys in 1998, with the exception of Hungary.

     Many kids turn up their noses at the thought of eating fish because, well, it can smell "fishy". While it
is usually a healthy source of protein in the diet, there may be several reasons to avoid biting into a forkful
of fish. Before you break out the tartar sauce, learn some facts about fish to keep yourself and the
environment healthy.
     Some fish may contain harmful chemicals, which can be the result of both natural causes and water
pollution. Mercury is a poisonous chemical, which occurs naturally in oceans and the Earth's crust, but
also comes from manmade sources, such as pesticides, burning garbage, and the releasing of fossil fuels.
     Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a group of chemicals, can also be found in some fish. These
dangerous manmade chemicals were used in many industries until 1977, when they were banned. PCBs
were released or leaked into the air and water and have been transported around the globe.
    How do mercury and PCBs end up in fish and the food supply? When they are released into the air,
they attach themselves to particles. These particles settle on the ground and in the water and are
eventually eaten by microscopic organisms. Small fish eat the microorganisms, and large fish eat the small
fish and on up the food chain.
     Because they can negatively affect your health, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency advises
that kids younger than 15 years old avoid fish that contain high levels of mercury and PCBs. These
include shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish.
     There are also many types of fish that are good for you, but because of overfishing are in danger of
being wiped out. Some are being fished in the wild so much that they cannot reproduce fast enough to
survive. Others are being farmed in ways that are not environmentally friendly. These fish include red
snapper, Atlantic salmon, blue fin tuna, and king crab.
     Despite these problems, there are several fish that are both healthy and sustainable, such as Alaskan
salmon, American catfish, Pacific cod, and several farmraised fish and shellfish.
