A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the was that he found himself unable to ask for help---his mobile phone went out of as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but to in cold wilderness. It was eight hours later that day broke, and then of the rescue.

It is almost that he could stand(忍受) the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his : “First of all, I up my physical, checked up my conditions and found myself not in mortal danger. As there was no to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to stop the wound(伤) from . In this way I dozed off(打瞌睡).”

His story put an end to my regret for the of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men to explore a mountain cave and got lost. to find a way out in the dark cave, they were frightened and ran anxiously(焦虑地) without a sense of . Finally they died in fear and exhaustion. According to the people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to themselves, they would probably sense a faint light glimmering(发出微弱的光) not far away.

Don’t you think you can compare(对比) it with itself? When you meet with in life and work, you are lost in darkness. Sometimes it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle(抗争) . It seems to be a negative(消极) attitude, a person who can afford to do so must have foresight(远见) as well as a great courage in the first place.

1. A. hopeful 有希望的 B. worst 最糟糕的 C. more更多的 D. best最好的 。

2.A. call 打电话 B. way 方法;方向 C. control 控制 D. work工作。因为电池用尽,手机不能用了,go out of work意为“不工作”。out of service当“停止服务”讲,out of order当“混乱”讲。选D。

3. A. cry 哭泣 B. lie 说谎 C. wait 等待 D. sleep 睡觉。 此处是固定句型nothing can be done but do, 相当于have no choice but to do,从作者叙述的朋友在深夜受伤但非常镇静这一事实可知其他动词不合题意。选C。

4. A. delay 耽误 B. success 成功 C. team 小组 D. arrival到来。

6. A. plan 计划 B. decision 决定 C. explanation 解释 D. excuse借口。

7. A. checked检查 B. looked 看;查阅 C. worked 工作 D. live生活。 选A。

8. A. energy精力 B. way 方法;方向 C. tools 工具 D. strength力量。

9. A. killing杀死 B. spreading 扩散 C. hurting 受伤 D. bleeding流血。

10. A. success成功 B. failure失败 C. disappointment 失望D. sadness悲伤。

11. A. had B. managed 设法做 C. tried努力尝试 D. meant意味着。 manage to do sth.

13. A. hearing 听力 B. sight 视力 C. feeling 感觉D. direction方向。

14. A. rescue 营救 B. village村庄 C. local 当地的 D. brave。 选A。

15. A. end 结束 B. top最顶端 C. opening 开始 ;开门处 D. side一边。

16. A. save 挽救 B. help帮助 C. stop 停止 D. calm镇静。

17. A. adventure 冒险B. work 工作C. life 生活 D. mankind人类。

18. A. difficulty 困难B. happiness 快乐 C. sadness悲伤 D. excitement兴奋。 选A。

19. A. at last 最后 B. at once立刻 C. at times有时 D. at an end结束。

20.A. and 和 B. so 因此 C. but 但是 D. while当;然而;尽管。

Reducing the amount of sleep affects students’ performance at school. An American study asked schoolteachers to look at the effects of sleep restriction(限制) on children between six and twelve years of age. The teachers found that children who stayed up late had trouble thinking clearly and had more learning problems.

1. Doctor Fallone now works at the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. He presented the results last month at a science reporter conference in Washington, D. C.. The publication Sleep also reported the findings.

The teachers were asked to complete weekly performance reports on seventy-four schoolchildren. The study lasted three weeks. During that period, Doctor Fallone and his team controlled the amount of sleep the children received.

2. During another week, every child was kept awake later than normal. Each night, the youngest boys and girls had less than eight hours of sleep. The older ones were limited to six and a half hours. During the final week of the study, each child received no less than ten hours of sleep a night.

The teachers were not told about how much sleep the students received. The study found that students who received eight hours or less had the most difficult remembering old information. 3.

Coffee has become a popular drink in our culture. Most people have a coffee maker at home for guests who come to visit. It naturally contains caffeine (咖啡因), which people in today’s society have somewhat come to rely on (依靠) to provide them with energy.

In the workplace many people start their day with a cup of coffee, and then continue to drink it until it’s time to go home. Many meetings also begin with a cup of coffee --- which is why so many workplaces now have a steady flow of office coffee.

Coffee is unsurprisingly one of the most traded agricultural products in the world, supporting the economy in many countries. Coffee is made from the roasted(烤,烘,焙) seeds of coffee cherries, which grow on trees in over 70 countries. The seeds are roasted to different degrees depending on the flavors wanted, and then are brewed (泡,煮) to create the coffee drink. Coffee usually sold is already roasted, so that all you have to do is add hot water.

Coffee is classified according to its appearance--light, medium light, medium, medium dark, dark, or very dark.

People argue a lot about whether the effect of drinking coffee is positive or negative. Some people think that drinking too much coffee is bad for our health. But you can buy decaffeinated (脱去咖啡因的) coffee, which has a lot less caffeine. Most people, however, would not care about the negative effects of drinking coffee.
