Here are some comments on L1 Hua from his classmates.
Lily said, "Li Hua is the smartest student in our class and usually scores the highest marks in the English and mathematics exams. His homework and assignments are always done to a very high standard so our teachers ask us to follow his example. We all admire his intelligence."
Kate said, "Li Hua is really a hard-working student. He spends at least four hours everyday reviewing his lessons and his homework is never late. As the exams get closer he becomes even more diligent and works into the early hours of the morning, making sure he has gone over all of the information covered in our classes."
John said, "Li Hua is the kind of person who is easy to co-operate with. Although he's very clever he is still willing to listen to others' opinions and take their suggestions. When we do group work in class we all want to be in his group because he always does his share of the work and is easy to get along with."
Tim said, "Li Hua is the class monitor and the most helpful student in our class. He always makes sure the classroom is kept clean and assists the teacher in handing out and collecting the students' books and homework. When a student is absent from school he will call and tell them what they have missed."

Dear Principal,
I am writing this letter to support my good friend Li Hua's application to study at your university. In my classmates' eyes, he has always been an intelligent and hard-working student, who is helpful and co-operative with others. For these reasons, he is very popular with everyone. (29字)
I agree with my classmates and I have personally benefited greatly from his help. I still remember at the beginning of this school year I was in a traffic accident and that required me to be in hospital for over two months. This situation caused me great concern as I feared I would fall far behind my classmates in this very important year of study. But thanks to Li Hua by the time I was well enough to leave hospital and return to work I was up-to-date in all areas of my study. Not only did he come to visit me every day, bringing with him all the lessons and materials our class had gone through each day, but he patiently sat with me and explained to me all those issues that I didn't understand. Only after staying with me for at least 2 hours every day would he go home and begin his own studies. (156字)
For the reasons above, I urge you to consider his application favorably.
Yours truly,
Li Ping

A. The most common problem is a “wandering” mind B. Selective listening is also a mental barrier C. Listening isn’t an easy skill to master D. Attitude can also influence good listening E. Noise and background music makes listening more difficult F. Listening is also related to the level of the listener’s knowledge |
1._____________
Listening is not as easy as someone thought. Even good listeners may recall only fifty percent of what they hear. Retention, the ability to remember and recall information, decreases about twenty to twenty-five percent after a few days. So no matter how well you listen in class, you’re always going to have to refresh your memory before a test! Unfortunately, many people have poor listening habits, and little listening training. To improve your listening skills, it’s important to understand what causes poor listening.
2.___________
If you find it difficult to concentrate solely on what a speaker is saying, there’s a good reason. The mind processes information much faster than a speaker can speak. The brain can process over 500 words per minute, while the average speaker talks at a rate of 124 to 250 words per minute. That means the mind can hear what’s being said and can think about something else at the same time.
3.____________
If you have a negative idea about the speaker or the topic, you’ll find it difficult to listen attentively. Hostile or captive audiences often have more difficultly listening than do favorable or voluntary ones.
4.____________
If a speaker speaks “above the heads” of an audience, people find it difficult to concentrate. Speakers who use unfamiliar words or who use incomplete explanations make it more difficult to listen. Speakers who “speak down” to audiences, failing to acknowledge what the audience already knows, also create mental blocks.
5.___________
When people listen selectively, they simply block out what they don’t want to hear. For instance, many people have habits that are dangerous to their health, like smoking. However, they often choose to block out what a speaker says about health risks. They may listen to a speech and think that the speaker’s message applies to other people, not them. In other words, they hear what they want to hear and ignore what they don’t want to hear.
