When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Be?fore they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation(住所).I suggested that they should stay at " bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my ad?vice, but they came back with some funny stories.

"We didn't stay at ' bed and breakfast' houses," they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday.”

I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought " VACANCIES" meant "holidays" , because the Spanish word for "holidays" is "vacaciones". So they did not go to house where the sign outside said " VACAN?CIES",which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said " NO VACANCIES" ,because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!

We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Span?ish, the word "DIVERSION" means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DIVERSION" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hold.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said "Thank you" in French. I meant that I would like some more, however,to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away!Later I found out that "Thank you" in French means "No,thank you."

Some desert animals can survive the summer heat and dryness because they are very unusual. The camel, for example, can experience and bear an increase in the temperature of its body and its blood of 9t without anything bad happening to it. In addition, it can drink a lot of water at one time;then store enough water in parts of its body to supply its needs for two weeks or more. The kangaroo rat,on the other hand, gets all the water it needs from water that it pro?duces when it breathes. However, most animals need to maintain a fairly constant body temper?ature, and will die if it rises more than 5^. Therefore, they need to find some way to stay away from the heat of the summer sun. Nor can many animals either store or produce water in their bodies, as the camel and kangaroo rat can. So they must find ways to keep their bodies from losing water because of the heat.

Because very few desert animals can survive the high temperature of a typical summer day, most of them are active only in the night. Only after the sun has set does the desert come fully to life. The night is relatively cool, and the darkness provides protection, not only from the sun,but also from other animals and from the birds. So the coming of darkness is the signal for the large majority of animals and insects to start again their search for water and food. When morn?ing comes, most of them seek shelter again:many go underground;nearly all find some dark and cool place where they can keep away from the sun's heat.

For many species of insects, living in the desert is easier than for animals. Like many des?ert plants, they have a waterproof skin which prevents water loss because of the high tempera?ture. In addition, some species spend all or most of their life below ground. Here, for most of the year at least, there is some moisture, and it is generally cooler than on the surface. In the case of ants, only adults leave the underground nests, and they do so only to gather food or to defend the nest against attack.

A.     it can produce water through breathing

B.     it can store water in parts of its body

C.     it can maintain different body temperatures

D.     it can drink a lot of water at a time

(   ) 3. Why is it easy for many species of insects to live in the desert?

A.     Because it is not difficult for them to survive there.

B.     Because they are not afraid of the heat.

C.     Because it is not difficult for them to find food there.

D.     Because they have a waterproof skin.

(   ) 4. Why is the desert full of activity in summer nights?

A.     Because it is cooler and safer for most animals.

B.     Because animals can find food in the dark.

C.     Because it is easy to find water at night.

D.     Because animals cannot sleep at night.

Every time you visit Disney World, there's something new to see. Each time the park ex?pands ,so do your chances to spend money. How can you save? As a family guide to Disney World, I've been to the park more than 25 times with my kids, and I've developed a few money-saving tips.

Buy the five-day All-in-One Pass even if you're visiting for fewer days,it's a deal (the pass costs $299 for visitors ages 10 and up, $183 for kids ages three to nine and is free for kids under age three). Without the pass, you'll have to pay separately for Pleasure Island and the water parks. A single trip to Blizzard Beach, for example, would cost a family of four $100.

Dine out at lunch. The prices at some of the nicer restaurants, especially those in Epcot's World Showcase, are much lower at noontime than at dinner. It's wise to make reservations(预定)before you leave home.

Become a Gold Card Member. For $65 ,you can get a Magic Kingdom Club Gold Card (call 1 -800-56-DISNEY). Cardholders get up to 20 percent off Disney hotel rooms, plus price breaks on character breakfasts, theme park tickets and goods from Disney stores.

Don't pay extra to see a character. Character theme dinner shows are expensive, costing a family of four about $140, and even a character breakfast, where Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck joins you for cakes, can set you back $50. If your budget(预算)is tight, try to meet the characters inside the theme parks and at free in-park shows. You can watch the Diamond Horse?shoe show, for example, in the Magic Kingdom for no additional cost, while the similarly themed Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue needs expensive tickets.

Wait until the end of your trip to buy souvenirs(纪念品).By then, the kids will really know what they want, and you won't waste money on expensive things.

A.     How to save money when visiting Disney World.

B.     How to find good restaurants in Disney World.

(   ) 2. Which of the following can be used in place of "set you back"?

A. Offer you much. B. Save you much.

C. Cost you much. D. Pay you much.

(   ) 3. You should pay more money

A.     if you have a five-day All-in-One Pass while you're visiting for four days

B.     if you do not make a reservation for hotel rooms in advance

C.     if you are not a Magic Kingdom Club Gold Card holder

D.     if you watch the Diamond Horseshoe Show in the Magic Kingdom.

No one can believe that the over 6,300 kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not,the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger.

The Great Wall can be called "great" mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall,it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2 , 000 years. It began in the rule of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC―206 BC) ,and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.

Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind man-made destroy. The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people's names are put away as remembrances. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor-load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base.

It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all,the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation's great civilization and learn to love it.

(   ) 1. Why does the writer say the Great Wall might disappear?

A.     All parts of it are in danger now.

B.     Too many tourists have been there, leaving too much rubbish.

C.     Some parts of it are being destroyed.

D.     It is too old to be used again.

(   ) 2. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A.     The Great Wall was completed in the Ming Dynasty.

B.     Not all the foreign tourists like the Great Wall.

C.     The first part of the Great Wall was built in 221 BC.

D.     The Qin Great Wall was protected well.

(   ) 3. The underlined part "those sections far away from the public eyes" (in Paragraph 2)
refers to the parts of the Great Wall

A.     that are too difficult to find

B.     that nobody can watch

C.     that are too far to be seen

D.     that are not well-known to the public

(   ) 4. What's the main reason of the Great Wall's being destroyed?

A.     The local people are short of culture knowledge.

B.     The local people need bricks and stones to build houses.

C.     The local people think that the Great Wall is not important.

D.     The local people sell the bricks for a living.
