I got a cancer when I was 18. This was a big deal for someone to 31. I chose to fight. After treatments, I 32 from my illness. Life couldn’t have been any 33. When I became fit years later, I met a wonderful man and got married. 34, I still felt something missing and eager to find my 35.
As my 20-year anniversary (周年纪念) of being a cancer 36 approached, I wanted to do something special and 37. I organized a fundraiser, calling it “A Mission (使命) of Love” and thanks to my 38 family and friends, raised﹩4,000 for St. Jude’s, planning to 39 it myself. Three quarters of the money would be given as a (n) 40 to the hospital, and what was left would go toward buying 41 for the children. I also organized a T-shirt 42 activity for any child who felt well enough.
Thanksgiving Day seemed the most 43 day of the year for the mission, and so it was all arranged. We went to a store and 44 three shopping carts with toys. It was 45 we were celebrities (名人) when the employees and other shoppers knew what we were doing.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we got to St. Jude’s, I became 46 emotional, as my eyes were filled with tears of 47. After dropping the toys off, we arrived where six children were waiting anxiously to begin painting. To me, it was as though they weren’t sick, and to see them smile was the greatest gift I could have ever 48.
Leaving there that day, I knew I had finally found my purpose. All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t 49 why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you 50 in life. It’s what you do for others.

I was tired and hungry after a long day of work. When I walked into the living room, my 12-year-old son looked __26__ at me and said, “I love you.” I didn’t know what to say. __27__ several seconds all I could do was to stand there and __28__ down at him. My first thought was that he must need __29__ with his homework or he was trying to __30__ me for some news. Finally I asked, “What was that all about?”
“Nothing.” He said, “My teacher said we should __31__ our parents that we love them and see what they say. It’s a(n) __32__.”
The next day I called his teacher to __33__ more about this “experiment” and how the other parents had __34__.
“Basically, most of the fathers had the __35__ reaction as you did.” The teacher said, “When I first __36__ we try this, I asked the children what they thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble.” “The __37__ is,” the teacher explained, “feeling loved is an important part of __38__. It’s something all human beings __39__. What I’m trying to tell the children is that it’s too __40__ that we don’t all express those feelings. A boy should be __41__ to tell his dad that he loves him.”
The teacher, a middle-aged man, understands how __42__ it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.
When my son came to me that evening, I held on to him for __43__ second. And just __44__ he pulled away, I said in my deepest, most manly voice, “Hey, I love you, too.”
I don’t know if saying that made either of us healthier, but it did feel pretty good. Maybe next time if my child says “I love you”, it would not take me a whole day to think of the right __45__.

Hallmark arrived in my hometown of Calcutta, India when I was 16. On Valentine’s Day(情人节), I waited in line with many other teenagers just for a chance to get into the store. I remember wishing two things. One of them is that the good-looking boy whom I could see through the store window was picking out a gift for me. Unfortunately, Valentine’s Day passed and I received nothing but a lecture from my father on how Western capitalism(资本主义) was ruining your culture.
The next Valentine’s Day, I still didn’t have a boyfriend, but I did receive a greeting card from a secret admirer. I can’t remember what it exactly said inside the card, but it hardly mattered. I know I’m not the only one who’s had the blues because of being single on Valentine’s Day.
It’s not just on Valentine’s Day that I’m reminded of these feelings. One night, my friend and I were at the subway station in New York City waiting for the local to arrive. The station was mostly full of college students, and later an older couple walked in. Just at that moment, a street musician started playing She’s Only a Woman to Me. The couple began dancing around the station and lost in their own world. On the train, I found myself recalling the time when I was with a date at the subway station, and there he picked me up in his arms like I was a ballerina(芭蕾舞女演员).
My view of romance has changed from when I was 16 in Calcutta to now, 23, and living in Manhattan. This year, I won’t focus all my romantic expectations on one particular day. I’ll spend Valentine’s Day with friends in New York City. But I won’t try to hide somewhere or turn off my cellphone. Instead, I’ll help my coupled-up friends pack for their weekend trips to Rome.

Earlier this morning I e-mailed an old friend, Mark. We have been out of touch for 12 years, but the   36  is a wonderful thing. Finding his e-mail address   37  less than a minute. He is working on his doctoral paper in western America.
Mark and I met at a summer   38  that we both attended. I went every year from the time I was 8 or 9 until I was 15. I don’t   39  exactly, but I think Mark was there for as many years as I was.
We lived close to each other and   40  saw each other around the campsite, but not often. Mostly we stayed together for a week or two in the   41  and wrote letters back and forth during the rest of the first few years. I still have all of his letters in a box somewhere. I come across them occasionally and   42  to sit down and read through them, but I never have. He was a   43  and precious friend to me, and I am deeply   44  that we have drifted so far apart.
Mark was a very kind and incredibly bright and funny   45  . He loved Monty Python — I mean he was a fanatic(狂热者), and could   46  entire movies from memory. He was one of those kids who   47  such a unique and powerful mind   48   they never quite fit into the main stream of life.   49  Mark, who I believe realized that, never seemed to care about it. When I knew that Mark was working on his   50  (on a highly intellectual and fairly mysterious and difficult topic), I thought, “Well yes, of course.” He is just where I would
  51  him to be.
I wonder if he will write me back. I wonder if he will be   52  by where I am. I wonder whether he and I can be   53  again, or whether these years have left us with   54
in common. I wonder whether he can ever be the man I   55 , or only remain the boy I knew.

The clock struck eleven at night. The whole house was quiet. Everyone was in bed except me. Under the strong light,I looked sadly before me at a huge pile of that troublesome stuff(东西) they call “books”.
I was going to have my examination the next day.  “When can I go to bed?” I asked myself. I didn’t answer,in fact, I dared not.
The clock struck twelve. “ Oh,dear!” I cried. “Ten more books to read before I can go to bed!” We pupils are the most wretched creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy.
The clock struck one. I was quite desperate(绝望的)now. I forgot all I had learned. I was too tired to go on. I did the only thing I could. I prayed,“Oh,God,please help me pass the exam tomorrow. I do promise to work hard afterwards,Amen.” My eyes were so heavy that I could hardly open them. A few minutes later, with my head on the desk,I fell asleep.

I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? It’s a beautiful day.”
“No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning.
My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and when I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”.
When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨)might have pierced(穿透)a lung...”
My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. I didn’t hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled those words at him earlier in the day?
It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him.
“Daddy… I am so sorry…”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll be okay. ”
“No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?”
My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said. “Sweetheart, I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. I remember kissing you goodnight the night before, though. ”He managed a weak smile.
My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on.

A man and his wife were very poor. They kept hoping for new clothes and good food. The man enjoyed eating, and he especially liked cakes. One night an old woman came to their house and told them she would let them have three wishes. They could wish for anything they wanted.
The man had just finished eating a piece of bread for his dinner, but he was still hungry. He said, “I wish I had a big cake!”
Suddenly a cake appeared on his plate.
“You fool!” His wife cried. “You could have wished for a house full of wonderful food, but you wished for a cake. I wish that cake was on the end of your foolish nose! ”
Immediately the cake stuck to the end of his nose.
Then the man and his wife started blaming each other. “It’s your fault!” she man cried. “No, it’s your fault!” she answered. What could they do? The cake was still stuck to the husband’s nose.

Back in 2003 I had a pet rabbit named Alaska.Due to the rules the landlord had set,he had to be kept in the basement(地下室).One night I went downstairs to feed him.Keep in mind I’ve always thought the basement was frightening. As I was facing his cage and putting the bowl of water inside,a big shadow appeared behind me,as if a big, tall man were standing behind me.I turned around and nobody was there, but I got the distinct(清晰的)feeling that I was being watched.I basically dropped the water bowl and ran upstairs shouting for my mom.Ever since then I can’t go down there alone.
Once I was trying to get to sleep, and I slept with the lights off.All of sudden I wanted to leave the room eagerly, but I couldn’t get out of my bed,I was too scared. The feeling of someone looking closely at me was so upset,I was physically afraid to move or breathe.I opened my curtains to let the street light in,thinking the light would help me feel better to move. That did nothing.I must have sat there on my bed for about fifteen minutes before I got up.I didn’t sleep in there that night.I’ve never felt anything so upset!
Then there are all the little things, like seeing things in the comer of my eye, hearing doors open or close when I’m home alone, and the feeling of being watched.Once when my sister wasn’t home(we share a room)I heard someone breathing from her bed and heard the sheets rustle(沙沙声).Last week,I felt someone patting me in the shoulder when I was alone in my room.Sometimes I’ll be looking something and I’ll see one or more contorted(扭曲的),angry faces.
I realize that when one is looking for something to happen they can make things happen or imagine it.These are the moments in which I know nothing was imagined,so I wanted to share them and get your opinions. Thanks so much.
