题目内容

While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold
medal, or a world record broken, but a show of courage.
The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another,
two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to complete. It would have been
difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important.
I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was worng. I'm not an
expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality.
When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold-his arms were waving in an
attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitior.
I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he
made his turn to start back.It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes and you could tell he was
worn out.
But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed.
No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout "Come
on, you can do it!" and he did.
A clear minute past the average swimmer, this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went
wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded
one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors.
Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to
Sydney.
In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been cheated
out of gold, or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors, it_is_nice_to_watch_an_underdog.
1. From the passage we can learn that the young man ______.
A. made his turn to start back pitifully
B. was skillful in freestyle in the game
C. swam faster than the average swimmer
D. was not capable enough to win the medal
2. The crowd changed their attitudes because ________.
A. they felt sorry for the young man
B. they were moved by the young man
C. they wanted to show their sympathy
D. they meant to please the young man
3. According to the passage, "it_is_nice_to_watch_an_underdog" probably means ________.
A. it's amusing to watch a man with awful swimming skills
B. it's amazing to watch an ordinary man challenging himself
C. it's cheerful for athletes to act proudly before their competitors
D. it's brave enough for some athletes to remove the silver medals
4. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Compete for Gold!
B. Try again!
C. Break a Record!
D. Go for it!

I used to be the messiest person alive.Over  the  years, through  watching  others  and  by
trial and error,I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through
with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen.Make a
list of all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thorougy and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental
solutions of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn't work, you have way two and
way three to lean back on.Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It's just a matter of
being organized.Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances
are that if one of those ways doesn't work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary.
It will show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the
results obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out,
and be sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time frame you set for
yourself.
Don't try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you
and make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve
this by sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid?project. It will only annoy everyone
around you including yourself.Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and,in some cases, even
money.
So,don't be afraid of organization. The older we get,the more necessary it becomes to have the
skills necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized
and manageable way.It pays to be organized, after all.
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.
Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
An apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training that combines workplace experience and classroom
learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends
the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman-
someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice's time is spent in a classroom
environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a full-time undertaking.
One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that
hire them pay for school. What's more, it offers apprentices an "earn while you learn" opportunity. They usually
start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job
and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would
receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a pool of well-trained workers to
draw from.
Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night,
which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off (下岗) if business for the employers
is slow.
Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recognized
and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the
companies they apprenticed with; others go onto different companies or become self-employed contractors.

We're all connected. You can send an e-mail message to a friend, and your friend can pass it on to
one of his or her friends, and that friend can do the same, continuing the chain. Eventually, your message
could reach just about anyone in the world, and it might take only five to seven e-mails for the message
to get there.
Scientists recently tested that idea in a study involving 24,000 people. Participants had to try to get
a message forwarded to one of 18 randomly chosen people. Each participant started by sending one
e-mail to someone they knew. Recipients could then forward the e-mail once to someone they knew,
and so on.
Targets, who were randomly assigned by researchers from Columbia University in New York, lived
in 13 countries. They included an Australian police officer, a Norwegian veterinarian, and a college
professor.
Out of 24,000 chains, only 384 reached their goal. The rest petered out, usually because one of the
recipients was either too busy to forward the message or thought it was junk mail.
The links that reached their goal made it in an average of 4.05 e-mails. Based on the lengths of the
failed chains, the researchers estimated that two strangers could generally make contact in five to seven
e-mails.
The most successful chains relied on casual acquaintances rather than close friends. That's because
your close friends know each other whereas your acquaintances tend to know people you don't know.
The phenomenon, known as the strength of weak ties, explains why people tend to get jobs through
people they know casually but aren't that close to.
So, start networking and instant messaging now. As they say in show business: It's all about who
you know.
1. If you want to get into touch with a stranger in the world, how many e-mails might it take for the
message to reach him/her?
A. 5 to 7
B. 18
C. 13
D. 384
2. Which of the following is Not true about the test?
A. 24,000 people took part in the study and sent e-mails to people they knew.
B. The 18 targets were chosen by chance.
C. About 98.4% of the mails didn't reach their goal because some people were too busy or they mistook
the message for junk mail.
D. The targets come from 13 countries, such as Australia, Norway and New York.
3. What does the word "estimate" mean in the passage?
A. make sure
B. suppose
C. think over
D. imagine
4. Why do people tend to get jobs more easily through casual acquaintances than close friends?
A. Because close friends don't talk with each other so much.
B. Because casual acquaintances can help you know more people and make more friends.
C. Because close friends don't spend so much time gathering together.
D. Because casual acquaintances are kinder and more willing to help others.
5. In which part of a newspaper will readers read this passage?
A. Culture
B. Entertainment
C. Information and Technology
D. Health

There are 70,000 pubs in England and Wales have several thousand more in Scotland.
Every country has its drinking shop, but none has an institution quite like the British pub.
The most important feature of a good pub (which modern buildings hardly ever achieve) is
a feeling of something private. It must have nooks and crannies, corners and snugs, where
conversations and assignations can take place without the whole world listening in.
Most pubs have at least two separate bars. The "public bar" which is for ordinary and
women is the basic drinking shop. The "lounge bar" (or saloon bar) which is for traveling
salesmen and "ladies" probably has a carpet on the floor and rather more comfortable
decoration. There may be a difference of a few pence in the drink prices, although all pubs
are required by law to put their price lists easily seen on display.
Pubs have been changing over the past few decades. More and more of them sell good,
inexpensive food and are competing strongly with restaurants. Tea and coffee are often on
offer and children are being made more welcome. The law says that no one under 14 may
enter a pub, and between 14 and 18 they must be accompanied by an adult and may not
buy or consume alcoholic drink. In reality some pubs, especially in country districts, welcome
whole families. Some set aside special rooms for children and where there are gardens they
are almost always welcome.
The most basic change, however, came about in the 1938 licensing laws which allowed
pubs in England and Wales to open not just at lunch time and in the evening, but all day, from
11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Scottish laws already permitted all day opening.)
1. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Pubs' history
B. Pubs in Britain
C. Changes of pubs
D. Features of a good pub
2. According to the British people, what kind of pub is a good one?
A. The one with all day opening time.
B. The one with good and inexpensive food.
C. The one with all kinds of people enjoying themselves.
D. The one with different parts where people can have a private conversation.

3. In paragraph 4, we can learn that .

A. pubs allow people above 14 to enter alone
B. pubs never allow people under 18 to enter
C. pubs don't sell more expensive food than restaurants
D. pubs often sell alcoholic drinks as well as tea and coffee
4. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. The law requires all the pubs have slightly different prices of drinks.
B. Ordinary people and women are often having fun in the "public pub".
C. In some country pubs, children accompanied by their parents are always welcome.
D. Scottish laws allow pubs to open not just at lunch time and in the evening, but all day.

The US is one of the biggest countries in the world. It is well-known because its population comes
from all over the world. The immigrants(移民) can learn English to keep the United States united, but it
is unfair to have to drop their culture for an American way of life.
I believe that recent immigrants should learn English in order to live in this country. If they don’t learn
English, they won’t be- able to communicate and do what they want. Anita, one of my mother’s friends,
came here from Ecuador(厄瓜多尔) three years ago. She does not speak English. One day her
daughter got a serious fever. She didn’t know what was going on, so she tried to call an ambulance(救
护车). However, when she called the hospital, she couldn’t talk. The operator(接线员) couldn’t
understand what Anita was saying. Thankfully, her sister arrived and called the ambulance. The doctor
told Anita that if she hadn’t arrived at the hospital in time, her daughter would have died.
Immigrants should learn English to speak with the public, but they should also keep their language at
home. If we learn English only and forget our own language, we won’t be able to communicate with our
parents. Florence, my co-worker, speaks English only. Her mother didn’t teach her Spanish, her mother
language. She has lost her mother language, tradition and culture, so she can’t pass them down to her
future generations.
In conclusion, immigrants should learn English in order to communicate with the public and to keep the
country united, but they shouldn’t drop their culture for an American way of life.

1. When Anita’s daughter was ill, Anita___________.

A. couldn’t speak
B. tried to call an ambulance
C. called her sister for help at once
D. sent her to the hospital immediately

2. The author mentions Anita’s experience mainly to show us __________.

A. English is a difficult language for immigrants to learn
B. immigrants should help each other in a strange country
C. it is necessary for immigrants to learn the common language
D. immigrants should keep their own language and culture

3. Florence is a woman who _______________.

A. can speak both English and Spanish
B. was born in Spain but grew up in the US
C. has given up her native culture
D. is one of the author’s classmates

4. Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?

           A                               B                               C                             D

5. What’s the author’s attitude towards immigrants?

A. immigrants should learn English well
B. immigrants should speak their own language
C. immigrants have to drop their own culture for American way of life
D. immigrants should learn English as well as keep their own language
