With CRI, I was impressed by China¡¯s rapid development in all spheres. But I felt so sorry to get to know about the snowstorms in China and Wenchuan earthquake. CRI and CCTV play a great role in introducing China to the world! Kudos! My friends and I wish CRI all the best!

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿There are many traditions around the holidays. ¡°Holiday traditions¡± are things that people do every year during a holiday such as Christmas or Thanksgiving. At Christmas, for example, many people put up a Christmas tree or Christmas lights. These are Christmas traditions that have been going on for many years. But there is a ¡°new¡± Christmas tradition that has become very popular: the TV firelog, a TV channel that shows nothing but a large log fire, blazing in a fireplace.

People put it on their TV and it makes them feel like they are watching and listening to a crackling fire. It makes them feel calm and comfortable. The origin(ÆðÔ´) dates back to 1986 in Canada. At that time, not very many people knew about it or watched the channel. Today, more than three million people watch the firelog channel during the winter holiday season. That year, the firelog channel was created(´´Ôì) to give the workers in the company that is now called Shaw Cable, a break at Christmas. By running the firelog during the holidays, everyone could go home for a few days and enjoy a bit of time off.

At that time, it was only broadcast to people in Edmonton but today it reaches people across Canada and beyond. This year, the Shaw firelog was updated. It is pretty high tech. Although it¡¯s still really just a fire log that has been filmed, it has its own Twitter account (@ShawFireLog), its own Facebook page and it even has a computer App so you can see the burning log on a smartphone or a tablet. The Shaw firelog will burn until Jan. 5 on Shaw Cable, channel 222.

C. What makes the TV firelog so popular.

D. The TV firelog today.

¡¾2¡¿What does the underlined words ¡°the TV firelog¡± mean in Paragraph 1?

B. It is a TV channel that shows nothing but a fireplace.

C. It is a TV channel with all kinds of Christmas traditional programs.

D. It is a TV channel where people can watch a large log fire.

¡¾3¡¿For what purpose was the TV firelog created?

A. To attract more people to watch their programs.

B. To make people feel calm and comfortable by watching a crackling fire.

C. To give the people working at the company a few days off at Christmas.

D. To create more new traditions for people to celebrate Christmas.

¡¾4¡¿What can we learn about the TV firelog from the passage?

A. More than three million people watched the channel in 1986.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Some people may say a hero is someone older than you, someone you personally know, someone who has done something everyone knows about, etc. I don¡¯t think a hero necessarily has to be an older person or a close friend or a family member. My hero is younger than me, but we are related. His name is Marcus. He is my cousin. He isn¡¯t necessarily a wise person or someone who does something great every day, but he has taught me to appreciate some of the simple things in life.

I am now in 11th grade. When I was in 8th grade, Marcus had a brain tumor (ÄÔÁö) which had to be removed. Thankfully the tumor was benign (Á¼ÐÔµÄ). When the doctors removed it Marcus lost his sight. He felt down only once. Ever since then, he has been an extremely happy second-grader. He is very typical of a nine-year-old. He likes to tell jokes, play new games, and he likes to play tricks on people, just like children at his age. I love spending time with him. We go to movies whenever there is a good one and look after him every chance I get.

I say that Marcus helps to appreciate the simple thing in life. He doesn¡¯t have his sight and that causes me to realize how lucky I am to be able to see, to walk, and to talk. I can do everything I need to. If everyone could see how happy and satisfied Marcus is and how much he makes everyone around him happy, then they might just be able to better appreciate the simple things in life.

¡¾1¡¿It can be inferred that the author has_________.

A. the same idea about heroes as others

B. a different idea about heroes from others

C. the idea that a hero must be older

D. the idea that a hero must be a close friend

¡¾2¡¿Why does the author consider his cousin as a hero?

A. Because his cousin is a very wise person..

B. Because his cousin does great things every day.

C. Because his cousin teaches him how to enjoy a simple life.

D. Because his cousin teaches him to live a rich life.

¡¾3¡¿What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Marcus looks older than his age.

B. Marcus isn¡¯t nine years old at all.

C. Marcus is different from the other students.

D. Marcus is the same as the other children at his age.

¡¾4¡¿What makes the author think himself lucky?

A. Marcus¡¯ simple life. B. Marcus¡¯ serious illness.

C. Marcus¡¯ blindness. D. Marcus¡¯ recovery.
