Helping Students Find Their Writing Voices
One of the most frustrating things for writing teachers is reading papers that simply lack style. When all of the research has been completed and all of the sentences are structured well, but the paper still lacks some pizzazz(活力),it can be boring to grade. If you are searching for ways to help your students find their voices, why not try making students themselves the topic of the writing?    【小题1】
Who are you?
One of the most difficult questions for students to answer is: “Who are you?” _  【小题2】__ In doing this, through writing, students will start to see their personalities differently and, hopefully, be able to add a feature to their writing.
Dear John
【小题3】     Encourage them to write to a famous person they’ve always admired, and then the one they absolutely hate. Explore how their language changes between the two letters. When students know their audiences, it is much easier for them to add the kind of personality their audience wants to see.
【小题4】     When students write about what matters most to them, they will often give you the best writing you’ve ever seen. You’ll get those when you ask questions that hit home. When students have something to say about a given topic, it can be easier for them to get their ideas down and then work on their writing style.
Get the words on paper, and then edit them
The most valuable lesson students can learn is to write first, and edit later. Have students write for five minutes about their topics. If they can get their ideas down on paper, that’s 90% of the battle.  【小题5】  This can help them realize that, once they have the ideas down, the rest is just fine tuning(微调). Once they have this skill mastered, it’s easy for them to start adding their own personal voices to their papers.

A.What matters to you?
B.What style is taught in class?
C.When they write about themselves, students’ voices often shine through.
D.Writing letters is a great way for students to explore their writing style.
E. Have your students explore who they are and what makes them unique.
F. Voice is that magical quality which is able to make a creative writing idea sing!
G. After that, have them edit these ideas into a really strong introductory paragraph.

Electrical devices(仪器) could soon use power made by human energy. Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking. British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device.

The device connects to a person’s knee. As the person walks, the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To do this, the device helps with the slowing down movement of the leg. The movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six minutes.

There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people who work in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also be used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers(起搏器). It could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs.

The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy. But the researchers hope to make a lighter, less costly version. An improved version shou1d be ready in one year.

The developers hope the device will one day help developing countries. Near1y twenty five percent of people around the world live without electric power.

A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of the University of Pennsylvania. He created a bag carried on a person’s back that also produces power from wa1king.

The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag. But the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.

1.The second paragraph mainly talks about .

A. who developed the device

B. how the device works

C. several possible uses for the devices

D. how much electricity the device can produce

2.Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new device .

A. produces power without adding more loads to the walker

B. can produce more power in a much shorter time

C. needs to be equipped with a battery

D. can help the walker wa1k faster

3.From the passage, we can learn that the electrical device can .

A. help housewives operate the washing machine

B. make it much easier for us to go online

C. produce more electricity than that invented by Larry Rome

D. be applied in medicine to operate heart pacemakers

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. First device powered by walking wi1l soon be on the market

B. Advanced technology brings in a new way to operate heart pacemakers

C. Device gives new meaning to the idea of power walking

D. Human energy will become a main source of electricity

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.

When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, an attitude which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.

Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.

So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.

Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.

I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.

1.With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often______.

A. kept watering them every morning

B. talked to them to get their attention

C. paid little attention to them

D. beat them to make them grow deep roots

2. What does the underlined word "Adversity" mean in the sixth paragraph?

A. Difficult living conditions. B. Lack of moisture.

C. Enough care or attention. D. Bad weather.

3.Which prayer does the author wish for his sons?

A. Have an easy life, without too much to worry about.

B. Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives.

C. Have good luck, encountering less hardship in their life.

D. Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future.

Last week, I bought an alarm system for about $ 450. It consisted of a control unit with three small units. I put the control unit in the sitting-room and fastened the other units by the front door, back door and living-room windows. The instructions told us to choose three numbers, so we chose 491, the last three numbers of our telephone number.

Now I will explain how the alarm works:

1. There is a power siren in the control unit. It makes a very loud noise.

2. Each of the small units sends out beams or rays in different directions. If anything moves, it breaks a beam. This sends signal to the control unit. The siren makes a noise which you can hear 50 meters away.

3. When we go to bed, I press the three buttons numbered 4, 9 and 1. Then we have 30 seconds to get out of the room before the alarm starts to work. That night I slept soundly because I was sure that no burglar could get into our house. However, at about 2:10 a. m. , I woke up and heard the siren.

"There must be a burglar in the house?" Mary said, "What shall we do?"

"I'll go and see who's there," I said, "Stay here. Don't make a noise. "

I went down stairs quietly. When I reached the living-room, I switched on my torch and looked round the room. Then I turned the light on. I switched the siren off and searched the rooms downstairs. There was nothing wrong except that the back door was unlocked. I locked it, re-set the alarm and went back to bed.

About an hour later, the alarm started again. I jumped out of bed, fell over a chair in the dark and bumped into the bedroom door. Mary woke up and started hitting me with a torch. "Hey! Wait a minute!" I whispered, "It's only me. I'm going downstairs to see what's wrong."

I went down into the living-room and listened for a moment. The only sound I could hear was the siren. I tamed on the light and switched the siren off. As I did so, I glanced across at the curtains in front of the windows. I saw a house lizard (a kind of small animals)(壁虎) disappear behind the curtains.

"Oh!" I said to myself. "That's our burglar.”

When the lizard moved, it started the siren. I guessed the alarm had been made in Europe, where there are no house lizards.

Well, I won't finish this story but if you want an alarm system free of charge, let me know. I'll send you ours. We bought a dog this morning. It knows the difference between a lizard and a burglar(强盗).
