Solar energy for your home is coming. It can help you as a single home owner. It can help the whole country as well.Whether or not solar energy can save your money depends on many things.Where you live is one factor. The type of home you have is another.Things like insulation(绝缘)present energy costs and the type of system you buy are added factors.
Using solar energy can help save our precious fuel.As you know, our supplies of oil and gas are very limited. There is just not enough on hand to meet all our future energy needs. And when Mother Nature says that's all, the only way we can delay hearing those words is by starting to save energy now and by using other sources, like the sun.
We won't have to worry about the sun's running out of energy for another several billion years or so.Besides begin an endless source of energy, the use of the sun has other advantages as well. The sun doesn't offer as many problems as other energy sources. For example, fossil fuel plants add to already high pollution levels. With sola energy, we will still need sources of energy, but we won't need as much. That means we can cut down on our pollution problems.
With all these good points, why don't we use more solar power? There are many reasons for this. The biggest reason is money.Until now, it was just not practical for a home owner to put in a solar unit. There were cheaper sources of energy. All this is changing now.Solar costs are starting to equal the costs of oil and electricity.Experts say that gas, oil and electricity prices will continue to rise. The demand for electricity is increasing rapidly. But new power plants will use more gas, oil or coal.Already in some places the supply of electricity is being rationed.Solar energy is now in its infancy. It could soon grow to become a major part of our nation's energy supply.

“When one of the doctors criticizes me, I get defensive.I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I’m not wrong.”says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.
When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself.“I had put everything I had into making that sale,”Sol says,“and I felt that I had failed as a person.I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure.
Rather than reacting immediately to criticism, take some time to think over what was said.Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person’s position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.
After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be“nothing”.“I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there,”says Sheila.“His criticism didn’t really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them.”In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job. However, that’s an extreme reaction. You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in-depth discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn’t worth fighting this time. The key, in any case, is to have a reasonable plan.

When Sol was criticized by his employer, he ________.
[ ]
A.
argued bitterly with his employer
B.
was angry and gave up his job.
C.

(2)
According to the writer, you should take time to think about criticism because ________.
[ ]
A.
people may have a mistaken idea of what you did
B.
you should welcome other people’s opinions
C.
people may discuss it with you in depth
D.
you need time to understand yourself
(3)
When the writer says that“the best answer may be ‘nothing’, he means you may decide ________.
[ ]
A.
to take no notice of the criticism
B.
to argue with your boss
C.
you need to change your job.
D.
you’ve done nothing wrong
(4)
The writer thinks Sheila can decide to leave her job because her boss ________.
[ ]
A.
didn’t like her appearance
B.
refused to change his opinion
C.
made an unreasonable criticism
D.
refused to talk to her about the criticism
(5)
What’s the best subtitle of the last paragraph?
[ ]
A.

B.
React criticism quickly.
C.
Take action quickly.

It’s not the flashiest car in the world. Not even close. But the 1971 Volkswagen named Helios can do something most cars can’t:run on solar energy-energy from the sun’s light and heat!
Joshua Bechtold, 14, and the other students at the Riverside School in Lyndonville, Vermont, worked many months to get Helios ready for the 1999 American Tour de Sol(“Sol”is the Latin word for“sun”).They named their car after Helios, the sun god in Greek mythology(
神话).
The 4-year-old Tour de Sol encourages the use of“green”, or environmentally friendly, cars to help reduce pollution and save energy. It’s not a race.Cars are judged on fuel efficiency(
耗油量) rather than speed. In the week-long event, 44 cars took the 350-mile tour from Waterbury, Connecticut, to Lake George, New York.Of the 23 student cars, Helios was the only one built by middle school students.
A teacher drove Helios, but the children talked with people wherever they stopped along the road.“That was my favorite part,”says Anna Browne, 15.“We explained how the car runs.”
Due in part to old, inefficient batteries(
电池), Helios finished fourth-out of four-in its kind, the sun-powered class.“We were there for the fun of it,”Anna says.“We’re proud of Helios,”says Ariel Gleicher, 14.“It’s a car that’s good for the environment.”
