14.A group of students in Japan have created an eerily (怪异的) realistic robot baby to motivate young people to start planning a family and boost the country's birth rate.The automated doll developed at the University of Tsukuba,called Yotara,giggles (咯咯地笑) and"wakes up"when a rattle(拨浪鼓) is shaken.
He can become angry and doze off (打瞌睡)like a real baby and smiles when his stomach is rubbed.The robot can also sneeze and have a runny nose,thanks to a heated water pump system.The students of the Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences created the robot with touch sensors.A projector beams ( 照射) the facial features onto a warm silicon balloon which makes up Yotara's face.The robot's facial expressions and body movements change according to pressure applied to different parts of its body.
The information collected through touch sensors under the silicon skin is processed by a special programme.It then changes the baby's expression projected onto the balloon-face from behind.Its head with a bonnet(童帽),a colourful blanket covers the robot's limbs which stimulate wiggling with the help of a geared motor."We wanted to create a new type of robot that is soft,cuddly and cute,"said project leader Hiroki Kunimura.
"We'd like people to experience the innocent,joyful expressions typical of small babies.Through this experience,it would be great if some people started feeling that they wanted to have their own baby,if they started feeling that working is not everything."
Japan's birth rate is among the lowest in the developed world at 1.37%,compared to 2.12% in the United States and l.84% in Britain.According to a ministry of labor and welfare report,Japan is facing serious economic consequences with over a quarter of its citizens expected to be aged over 65by 2015.The population is expected to shrink by a third within 50years if the birth rate does not increase.

The question swept the world last week when a Google-developed program called AlphaGo defeated the world top player,South Korean Lee Se-del,4-1.
So,what comes next?
Some people have been arguing that artificial intelligence,or AI in short,will be a bad thing for humans.In an interview with the BBC in 2014,UK scientist Stephen Hawking warned that"the development of full artificial intelligence could mean the end of the human race."
So are we really about to live in the world shown in the Terminator movies?
"Not quite,"answered The Economist.After all,it's not hard to get a computer program to remember and produce facts.What is hard is getting computers to use their knowledge in everyday situations.
"We think that,for the human being,things like sight and balance(视觉平衡),are natural and ordinary in our life."Thomas Edison,founder of Motion Figures,a company that is bringing AI to boys,told the newspaper."But for a robot,to walk up and down just like human beings requires various decisions to be made every second,and it's really difficult to do."
As The Economist put it,"We have a long way to go before AI can truly begin to be similar to the human brain, even though the technology can be great."
Meanwhile,John Markoff of The New York Times said that researchers should build artificial intelligence to make people more effective.
"Our fate is in our own hands,"he wrote."Since technology depends on the values of its creators,we can make human choices that use technology to improve the world."

9.Children pushed in buggies which face away from their parents may suffer longterm emotional(情感的)and language problems,according to a study published on Friday.
The research, believed to be the first of its kind, found that children who were not facing the person pushing them were less likely to talk, laugh and communicate with their parents.
The findings were based on a study of 2,722parents and babies and an experiment where 20babies were wheeled in buggies for a mile,facing their parents for half the journey and facing away for the other half.Parents using facetoface buggies were twice as likely to talk to their children while the babies'heart rates fell and they were twice as likely to fall asleep,showing that they were feeling relaxed and safe.
In addition,only one baby out of the 20studied laughed while sitting in an awayfacing buggy.
"Our data(数据) suggests that for many babies today,life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful.Stressed babies grow into anxious adults,"said Dr Suzanne Zeedyk,Developmental Psychologist at Scotland's Dundee University who carried out the research.
The study,which was published by National Literacy Trust as part of its"Talk To Your Baby"campaign,found that 62percent of all children observed travelled in awayfacing buggies.
Zeedyk said it would have a negative effect on babies'development if they spent a long time in awayfacing buggies, which would be bad to their ability to communicate with their parent at a time when their brain was developing rapidly.
Laura Barbour of the Sutton Trust,a social mobility charity which funded the research, said buggy manufacturers(制造商) should look closely at the findings.

The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea."Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group,often have lower self-respect,and regard reading as a headache."said Lisa Myton,manager of the children's department of the blibrary.
Last November the two groups started"Dog Day Afternoon"in the children's department of the main library.About 25children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes,reading for half an hour.Those who attended three of the four classes received a"pawgraphed"book at the last class.

6.Plastic bags are everywhere!Every day,we are handed countless plastic bags:when we go to grocery stores, clothing stores, book stores and restaurants.Yes,sometimes, they are  convenient, but most of the time, they are avoidable.A plastic bag is just not necessary for that apple you are about to eat or that soda you are going to drink right away.Consider these questions:
Do I need to take as many plastic bags in supermarkets?
Do I need a plastic bag for an item purchased that is already well packaged?
Could I bring my own shopping bag when making purchases?
Plastic bags are the cause of major environmental concerns. It is thought that an average person uses around 130 plastic bags per year.Using fewer plastic bags is a must in solving environmental problems.
Reasons why you should limit your use of plastic bags:
1.Plastic bags account for a major part of our waste in landfills(垃圾填埋场).Plastic
bags are light and hard to contain.Because of this, plastic bags fly easily in wind, float along in the currents of rivers and oceans, and get caught in trees and fences.
2.Plastic bags are made from a non-renewable natural resource(资源):oil. Therefore, this contributes to the disappearance of our natural resources.
3.Countless plastic bags end up in our oceans and cause harm to our sea life. Many sea animals and birds mistakenly eat and choke on plastic or become tied up in plastic bags that are floating around.
4.There are many better alternatives to plastic bags.Paper bags hold more than plastic bags. But the best alternative to using plastic bags is using cloth bags.

46.What's the main idea of the first paragraph?A
A.Plastic bags are uncontrollable
B.Plastic bags are unnecessary.
C.Plastic bags are inconvenient
D.Plastic bags are dangerous.
47.Which of the following is NOT the reason for limiting the use of plastic bags?D

D.pick up plastic bags found in rivers and oceans.
3.A few months ago as I wandered through my parents'house, the same house I grew up in,I had a sudden, scary realization. When my parents bought the house,in 1982,they were only two years older than I am now.I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I'd still be living in almost 30 years later.
It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, there's no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon.More importantly,I wouldn't want to.I'm not sure where I'll be living in two years,or what kind of job I'll have. And I don't think I'll be ready to settle down and stay in one place.
So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, they'd got their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives.
My friends and I--"Generation Y"--still aren't sure what we want to do with our lives.Whatever we end up doing,we want to make sure we're happy doing it.We'd rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. We'd rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account.
This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation"arrogant","impatient",and"overprotected".Some of these complaints have a point. As children,we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun.We grew up in a world full of technological innovation:cellphones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games.
Our parents looked to rise vertically(垂直的)--starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top,on the same track, often for the same company. That doesn't apply to my generation.
Because of that,it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction,we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents'generation did.
