W: She hasn't been around this week. Text 3 M: Jane, have you met Arvid Brown? I think he is going to your school. W: Oh, that Arvid. I've heard a lot about him. We've never actually been introduced. Text 4 W: Why so early? M: Early? It's 3 o'clock now. School starts at 8:45 in the morning and ends at 3 in the afternoon. W: In my country, we go to school from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. M: Gosh! Text 5 W: What size do you wear? M: A twelve. W: Oh, you're lucky. I have just the right size in store. Here it is. Why don't you try it on? Text 6 W: Don't you have any good news? M: No. Yesterday, I had to stay after school, because I was talking during my biology teacher's class. W: You'd better keep quiet during class. M: Sometimes I do. The day before yesterday, I was very quiet during my history teacher's class and I still had to stay after class. W: I don't understand. M: Because I fell asleep during his class, but it wasn't my fault. The lesson was very dull. W: I advise you to take school more seriously. If you don't pass your exam, you'll have to go out and work as a result. M: I don't see that it makes much difference. If I have a job, I have to do dull work every day, but if I'm in school, I must listen to dull teachers every day. Text 7 W: It's seven o'clock already, dear. M: Yes, I know. I decided to work the evening rush hour. W: And so your dinner's cold. Why do you work so hard? M: I just start, and then I can't stop. W: You can stop any time. You don't need to keep on working at all. M: And then what would I do? W: We could move to Florida. M: Oh, Florida. Is it any better than New York? W: It's warm and sunny all year round. No more snow, no more ice. M: And what about the children and the grandchildren? W: They could come and visit us every winter. M: And what would we do every spring, summer, and fall? W: A lot of our friends have moved to Florida. We know a lot of people there. M: Well, I'll think about it. Text 8 W: There are so many people in your house. What are they doing? M: We are having a party. I am the host and my wife is the hostess. W: Are they your guests? M: Yes, they are. They are all my friends. W: Who is that man? M: He is Professor Zhang. He is a Chinese teacher. His wife is a teacher, too. Their daughter is a college student. W: Who is that young man? M: He is her boyfriend. He is a young doctor. His name is Karl Black. Text 9 W: Good morning. Can I help you? M: Yes, please. I would like to know about the courses at this evening school. W: Is that a summer course you're interested in? M: Yes. W: Well, we have short full-time courses during the summer. M: Mm-mm. I would like to know how long one course lasts. W: Yes. Each course lasts for three weeks. M: How many hours per week, please? W: It's about twenty-three hours a week. Usually four and a half days each week. M: You must have a lot of students in the class, haven't you? W: We have a lot of students in the school but in the classes only between twelve and fourteen students. M: Could you please give me the dates of the first and second course? W: Yes, certainly. The first course begins on July 3 and lasts until July 20 and the second course is from July 24 until August 10. M: OK. Thank you very much. W: You're welcome. Text 10 I come from a big family…three brothers and a sister…and we all work in the family business. We make cakes. We used to have a small shop that sold the bread and other things that we made, but now we just make cakes and bread and deliver them to shops here. My father started the business, but he died six years ago and as I said, my mother is taking care of it now. Even before he died, when she was looking after the children and running the house, she helped him a lot with the business. So when dad fell ill, it wasn't difficult for her to take over from him. My older brother, George, was already helping a lot then , and I used to help out at weekends too, even when I was a child. |
