题目内容

17.A few years ago,pop poets such as Murray Lachlan Young began to set poetry to rock music with some surprising results.People thought that poetry was the new rock‘n'roll. However, despite the brief popularity of a few pop poets, poetry and pop music didn't seem t o mix.But are they really so different?
If you look back at the origins of poetry, there is a strong connection between poems and popular music. In Greek mythology, for example, the muse (女神) Erato is pictured with a lyre (里拉琴) in her hand, and looks just like the ancestor of the modern rock star with his electric guitar. In addition, the poets Shelley and Byron were as famous in the nineteenth century as the pop stars of today.
But despite their common origins, there are many differences between poetry and pop music.Pop songs are always written for a public performance, whereas poetry often isn't.And the lyrics in pop songs sometimes have less rhythm than those in poetry. This is because the music provides the rhythm rather than the words.Pop ly rics are also simpler and often keep on saying the same thing. This repetition works well in a performance and means that pop songs are easier for people to sing and learn by heart.
Both songs and poems tell a story or talk about feelings.Songs in particular deal with the different stages in a relationship, such as falling in love or breaking up.The words and ideas in songs are usually easier to understand than those in"serious"poetry. However, talented performers like Paul McCartney,or newer stars like Robbe Williams, often give simple songs more expression when they perform them. And some of the best lines from pop lyrics are as beautiful as poetry.
So although pop music and poetry have many differences, they do have one important thing in common:the power to make us think about how we feel.

8.A deaf and blind woman from Australia has become the first person to make a telephone call using a device that turns speech into Braille.Braille is a form of writing that uses raised dots on a surface that can be"read"by touching them.The technology is being tested for the first time in Australia and the United States.The test involved a simple phone call between two sisters.
Michelle Stevens is deaf and blind.Ms.Stevens says the Braille telephone will end years of feeling isolated,or feeling alone and apart from others.She is one of five Australians who are taking part in the new tests.These tests will take place in Australia at the same time in the United States,where the technology has been developed.

A similar test will also take place in the United States in a few months.Christopher Engelke is a director with the U.S.company Ultratec.He says the way that the whole system works is two deaf or hard of hearing people,who speak for themselves,will use the phone just like any other phone,except that much like getting subtitles (字幕) on TV,they get subtitles to the conversation appearing on the screen,although for Braille users they can read those subtitles in Braille bumps on a dynamic Braille display.
Developers of the device say it can change the lives of those who cannot see or hear.In Australia alone,it's estimated that there are 330,000people who are deaf-blind.Some groups say that number is likely to reach 1.2million by 2050.

5.A story from the Bible tells of old Babylon,where the men decided to build a tower that would touch the sky.But God was unhappy,and he made them speak different languages.They couldn't understand each other,so their dream never came true.
Yet the dream remains alive:if all men speak the same language,they can do anything.L.L.Zamenhof from Poland was among the men who pursue this dream.He developed Esperanto(世界语)between 1877and 1885.
As the most successful man-made world language,it is spoken by over two million people around the world.Last month,the World Esperanto Congress(大会),dealing with language rights,ended in Sweden.The 2004conference was held in Beijing.Most Esperanto speakers are in Central and Eastern Europe and in East Asia,particularly Chinese mainland.
Esperanto has two advantages.First,it's easy.Each letter has exactly one sound and there are just 16basic grammar rules.The second advantage is that it belongs to no one country.But Esperanto has only reached a small number of people compared with natural languages widely used around the world-such as English or Chinese.While these languages are deeply connected with their nations and cultures,Esperanto doesn't have this background.
Will Esperanto really become a global language? It remains a question.

12.Like most July days,it was hot.I stepped into a tiny ice-cream shop to cool off with a chocolate ice-cream.It was an old woman bent over a table near the door.Her back was so badly twisted that her face nearly touched the tabletop.I sat sown facing her couple of tables away.
"Poor woman,"I thought"What does she get out of life?Shy God let people live so long past their prime?"
As I thought,another aged lady entered the shop and sat down with her.Soon the two of them were talking about childhood days.They talked of how little the shop had changed in 70years…In minutes,the two of them were trembling with laughter.
I looked again at the first woman,then in the mirror on a nearby wall,catching a picture of myself.I was wearing a dirty shirt.She was well dressed in white,her hands sparking with gold rings.I was sad.She was laughing,smiling.I was putting the pieces of my life together.She had millions of wonderful memories to recall.I sat alone.She was sharing the day with a good friend.I was secretly worried about getting old.She was old,but it wasn't hurting her.
As I left the shop,I thought of my foolish question about God letting people live past their prime.Why,that woman was more alive,more sensitive to life than I was.Age has not bent her spirit.(www.nmet168.com)

2.My color television has given me nothing but a headache.I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn't fit.I let a shop assistant fool me into buying a discontinued model.I realized this a day later,when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid.The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signedoff for the night.Fortunately,I didn't get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten t bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电)noise.For some reason,when certain shows switched into a commercial(商业广告),a loud noise would sound for a few seconds.Gradually,this noise began to appear during a show,and to get rid of it,I had to change to another channel and then change it back.Sometimes this technique would not work,and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound.I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉)shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise,I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away.At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist,and it stopped working altogether.My trip to the repair shop cost me $62,and the set is working well now,but I keep expecting more trouble.
