One day, there was something wrong with my father’s truck. So he needed a   8   to work. The sun wasn’t even up when we left the house,   9   it was already getting warm out. When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to   17   me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s my   18  . Don’t work too hard. I love you.”

His   19   met mine, then glanced away in the direction of his waiting tools, he   20   his throat and said, “Oh, and… me, too.”

Old age,I decided,is a gift. The other day a young person asked me how l felt about being old.I was taken aback.for I do not think of myself as old.Upon seeing my reaction.he was immediately embarrassed(尴尬的),but I explained that it was an interesting question, and I would think it over, and let him know.

Old age is a gift.I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be.As I’ve aged.I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself.I don’t scold myself for eating that extra cookie,or for not making my bed…I am entitled to overeat,to be messy.I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

I will walk along the beach in a swimming suit that is stretched over my fat body.and will dive into the waves freely if I choose to,in spite of the pitying glances from the bikini sets. They, too, will get old.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one,or when a child suffers,or even when a beloved pet is hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength, understanding and sympathy.A heart never broken will never know the joy of being imperfect.

So,to answer your question, I like being old.It has set me flee.I like the person I have become.I am not going to live forever.but while I am still here.1 will not waste time feeling sorry for what could have been,or worrying about what will be.And I shall eat dessert every single day.

There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very lowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.

A type of reading which necessitates(需要) careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practise this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning of the text.
