Text 2 M: If I were you, I would take a plane instead of a bus, it will take you forever to get there. W: But flying makes me so nervous. Text 3 M: I went to borrow these two books, and also need those three books, but I couldn't find them. W: Well, they were all out, but two of them are due back in about a week. Text 4 M: Have you seen my uncle ED? W: Yes, his long red beard makes him stand out from the others. Text 5 M: How did you feel when the headteacher called you. W: I couldn't say I was relaxed. Text 6 W: Mr. Black, does your throat hurt? M: Yes. W: OK. Do you want to get better? M: Of course. I do. W: Well, Mr. Black. It might be a good idea if you gave up drinking. M: Right, Doctor. I'll try. W: And Mr. Black. I would advise you to quit smoking. M: What? I'm afraid that's out of the question. Text 7 M: Now Jerry, did you get a good view of the accident? W: Oh, yes. I was standing outside Brown's toyshop and I saw it all quite clearly. M: Do you know what time it was? W: Yes, I check my watch. It was 2:45 exactly. But my watch is five minutes early. M: Good. Now, how fast was the delivery lorry moving? W: Well, quite slow - about 10 miles an hour. It was coming up York Road and I suppose the driver realized the lights were going to change. But they were still red when he went over them. M: I see. What about the car? W: It was a red car. It was coming along the road at about 30 miles per hour. The driver barked when he saw the lorry crossing the road. M: Did you see what colour his traffic light was? W: Yes, it changed to yellow just before he crossed it Text 8 M: Mary told me today that she has a friend with a car for sale. W: Oh, she did? Then it's a used car of course. M: Yes, it's used, but she said it was in very good shape. It's a small foreign car. W: What else did she tell you? Did she tell you how many miles there are on it. M: She thinks it has about twenty-five or thirty thousand miles. W: That's not too bad. What about the price? Did she tell you how much her friend wants for the car? M: Three thousand dollars. W: Three thousand! That's almost too good to be true. Did she say why her friend wants to sell it? M: He lives in the city, and you know how expensive it is to keep a car in the city. W: Yes, that's true, but with the price of gasoline these days, it's true everywhere. Did she tell you when we can go and look at it? M: No, but she gave her friend's telephone number. Text 9 W: Hello. Helen! M: Oh. This is Mike Landon here. Is Tony Black there? W: I'm afraid not. He's away for a day or two. Back on…let me see…Monday morning. M: Bad luck! Oh, well, perhaps I can leave a message for him. W: Yes, of course. Just a minute. (rustle of paper) Now let me see…to Tony Black from Mike London. OK. And what's the message? M: Well it's just this: Could he come to a meeting on Monday afternoon at 5 p.m.? W: That's this Monday coming, October 16th? M: Right. It's to discuss the new factory in France. W: Fine. I've got that…I'll see that he gets it as soon as he comes in on Monday M: Good. Goodbye. Text 10 When Benjamin Franklin first went to France he couldn't speak or understand a word of French. One day he was at a meeting with many important men of France. There were several speeches and as always, everybody applauded after each speech. Franklin did not understand a word of these speeches, but he always applauded after each one. At last, after one of the speeches, everybody, including Franklin, got up, applauded, and cheered loudly. Then everybody began to laugh. Franklin asked the person next to him: “What are they laughing at?” “They are laughing at you,” said the man. “In the last speech, the speaker spoke about you. He said that France was proud of you; that you were a very good man and an excellent ambassador.” |
