Methods of studying vary; what works 1 for some students doesn’t work at all for others. The only thing you can do is experiment 2 you find a system that does work for you.But two things are sure: 3 else can do your studying for you, and unless you do find a system that works, you won’t although college.Meantime, there are a few rules that 4 for everybody. The hint is “don’t get 5 ”.

The problem of studying, 6 enough to start with, becomes almost 7 when you are trying to do 8 in one weekend. 9 the fastest readers have trouble 10 that. And if you are behind in written work that must be 11 , the teacher who accepts it 12 late will probably not give you good credit.Perhaps he may not accept it 13 .Getting behind in one class because you are spending so much time on another is really no 14 .Feeling pretty virtuous about the seven hours you spend on chemistry won’ t 15 one bit if the history teacher pops a quiz. And many freshmen do get into trouble by spending too much time on one class at the 16 of the others, either because they like one class much better or ?because they find it so much harder that they think, they should 17 all their time to it. 18 the reason, going the whole work for one class and neglecting the rest of them is a mistake, if you face this 19 , begin with the shortest and easiest 20 .Get them out of the way and then go to the more difficult, time consuming work.

I had my first job at the age of thirteen, when a friend of my mother’s who owned a book shop 36 me for six hours a week to help her in the shop. I was very 37 to earn my own pocket money and my parents 38 interfered with how I spent it, even when I was spending it 39 . They believed that by earning money, spending it, and learning from the 40 , I would become more mature and 41 about how to handle work, relationships with others, and money.

Like many 42 parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they 43 a great deal. When I was sixteen, for example, after I finished high school and before I entered university, I wanted to spend the summer months traveling around 44 . My mother was against the idea of my traveling alone at such a young age, but my father felt that it would be a great 45 for me. In the end, my father won the 46 on the condition that I limited my traveling to France, my mother’s home, where I had many uncles, aunts and cousins 47 through the country who could 48 shelter and help if I needed them.

Three years later, my younger brother decided to 49 a year off after his first year in university and travel through the United States and the Caribbean. Again my mother was very worried and not 50 to see my brother leave school, but my father encouraged him and my brother had a(n) 51 year working his way on trains and ships to 52 passage to different ports and cities, and discovering many fascinating places and people.

These kinds of experiences are probably rare for children in many countries but in the US they are fairly 53 . Most parents start 54 their children at a young age to do small things by themselves. By the time they have finished high school, many American kids have already had part-time jobs, traveled around the US or other countries on their own, have 55 the university they plan to attend and maybe even decided on their future career, and so on.

Now,perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for.Seeking material success is beginning to 26 large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hour work culture to make more money to buy more things is 27 up their lives, leaving them very little   28   or energy for family or hobbies. Many are turning to   29 ways of living and downshifting is one of them.

Six percent of the workers in Britain took the decision to 30 last year. One couple who downshifted are Daniel and Liz.They 31 to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she worked for an international bank. They 32 go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, 33 their two children with a nanny.Nearly twice a month Daniel had to 34 New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of  money 35 began to feel that life was passing them by.

Nowadays, they run 36 in the mountains of Wales.“I always wanted to have one here,”says Daniel,“and we took almost a year to 37 to downshift. It’s taken some time getting used to,but it’s been 38 it.We have to think 39 now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any 40 .However,I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot 41 .”

Liz,however,is not quite sure.“I used to enjoy my job, 42 it was hard work and long hours.I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m 43 getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do 44 ,though,is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the 45 is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从36—55各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to   36  .

I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph   37   we realized we were   38   . Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand new $20 bill. I was so   39    because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on   40   seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line.  41   I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I   42   I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just   43   out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.

My conscience(良心) opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldn’t   44    over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and   45  for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I    46   to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream in   57   that someone would say,“ Hey, Jeff, why don’t you use the change   48   the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so   49___ of my cash now.

For the next two years, whenever I was 50 of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “Don’t think about it....”

I have learned two things from this  51  .Maybe I was a fool for   52  in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a   53   pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will  54   up with you.

This reflects the saying, “A coward(懦夫) dies a thousand deaths; a hero dies once.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “  55  ” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.

Do you know what kind of things the young people are reading? More and more  36  and parents have noticed another kind of pollution, which comes from the printed papers  37  on streets.
These printed things 38  newspapers but have hardly anything to do with 39 . You can only find reading materials badly made up there---some are too strange for anyone to 40 ,  others are frightening stories of something  41  .However, many of the young readers are getting interested in such  42  reading, which  43 them what they should pay for their breakfast and brings them nightmares(噩梦)and immoral(邪恶)ideas in  44 .  Homework is left  45 ,  and daily games are lost.
These sellers shout on streets selling their papers well. The writers, publishers and printers,  46  they are, we never know,  are  47 their silent money.
The sheep-skinned wolf’s story seems to have been forgotten once again .Why not 48 this kind of thing? Yes, both teachers and parents have asked each other for more strict control of the young readers.  49  ,the more you want to forbid it, the more they want to have a look at it. 50  you may even find  several children, driven by the curious natures,  51  one patched paper,  which has travelled from hand to hand.
It really does 52  to our society. It has already formed a sort of moral pollution. The  53  teachers and parents need more powerful support in their protection of the young generation. At the same time the young 54  need more interesting books to help them  55  those ugly papers.
