“Hi! John.” Mary ran towards me with a rare bright smile on her face, saying, “I’m going to have a  1   performance tonight. I hope you’ll come. Here is the  2  .” She left in a hurry, disappearing in the crowds of people  3  .

“What?! What performance? Dance? Is that true?” I asked myself. Mary was not such kind of girl. She was a quite  4   girl. I had never seen her making up or wearing attractive clothes, for she did not know how to  5   indeed. What a terrible thing, especially for a plain girl!

“I should go to, I must go to. That’s a miracle!” I thought.

I arrived at the  6   with the ticket, and found my seat. Her performance was the seventh one. I knew I would  7  from a hard time before her turn, for I had no  8  of art, but her performance was  9  watching, no matter how long I would wait. Time went slowly. I  10  with myself not to fall asleep.

“Let’s welcome the next exciting dance - Latin !”  11  filled the hall at once.

I opened my eyes as large as possible,  12  to lose anything. Wearing a golden and shining skirt, Mary appeared on the stage. Her dress went well with the brilliant lights. She was so beautiful. Dancing with a charming smile, she was fully  13   in the Latin music. At this moment, she looked like a pretty butterfly  14  on the splendid stage.

After all the performance  15  , I waited for her at the gate.

“Hi!” She stood in front of me with a bag and her crystal high-heeled shoes in her hands, and 16  as she used to be, but the making-up still could be seen.

“How do you feel?” There was not a little bit tired  17   on her face.

  18  !” I answered.

“Thank you! I knew it would be.” She could not  19   her excitement, laughing like a child. Looking at the shining crystal high-heeled shoes in the wonderful starry night, I  20  that every girl has a pair of special shoes which are like the crystal shoes of Cinderella.

It’s certain that the following tale is a nice example that can teach us a good lesson. One day, a young man  36 begged from door to door along the street.  37  an old wallet in hand, he was asking for a few coins to buy something to eat. He kept complaining about his bad 38  and kept wondering why those who had so much money were never   39  and were always desiring more.
“As for me, if I had only enough to eat and to wear, I would not want anything more."
Just at that moment Goddess Fortune  40  the beggar among the crowd and approached him, greeting, “Hi, young man, I have wished to   41  you for a long time. If you open your wallet, I will pour my gold into it. But keep in mind that I will do that only on this   42 : All that falls into the wallet will be pure gold belonging to you; but every piece falling upon the ground 43  become dust, worth nothing. Are you clear?”
“I see. Now I’m ready. ” said the beggar with confidence.
“Then you should   44 ! It’s obvious that your wallet is a/an   45 one, so don’t load it too heavily,” said the Goddess Fortune.
The excited beggar could hardly   46 to have gold. He quickly opened his wallet, and a   47  of yellow coins was poured into it. The wallet became heavier and heavier.
“Is that enough? Isn’t it cracking? Will your wallet strong enough for more?” warned the Goddess.
“Never  48 .It’s still strong enough now” replied the beggar firmly.
The wallet was filled with so many coins that the beggar’s hands began to   49 . “Ah, if only the golden stream would   50  forever! Just a little more,” said the beggar, “  51  just a handful or two.”
“There! It’s full. The wallet will   52 .” warned the Goddess again, but the beggar insisted, “ I know it will  53  a little more, just a little more.”
One more piece was added and the wallet split. The   54  fell upon the ground and became dust. The greedy beggar had now   55  but his broken wallet.

下面是几则寓言小故事:

46. An ant went to the bank of a river to quench its thirst, and being carried away by the rush of the stream, was on the point of drowning.  A dove sitting on a tree overhanging the water plucked a leaf and let it fall into the stream close to her.  The ant climbed onto it and floated in safety to the bank.  Shortly afterwards a birdcatcher came and stood under the tree, aiming at the dove.  The ant, perceiving his design, stung him in the foot.  In pain the birdcatcher shouted, and noise made the dove take wing.

47. Two men were travelling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path.  One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and hid himself in the branches.  The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and pretended to be dead as much as he could.  The bear soon left him, for he will not touch a dead body.  When he disappeared, the other traveler descended from the tree, and asked his friend what it was the bear had whispered in his ear.  “He gave me this advice,” his companion replied.  “Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger.”

48. A prince had some monkeys trained to dance.  Being naturally good at learning, they showed themselves excellent pupils, and in their rich clothes and masks, they danced as well as any of the courtiers.  Their performance was often repeated with great applause, till on one occasion a courtier, bent on mischief, took from his pocket a handful of nuts and threw them upon the stage.  The monkeys at the sight of the nuts forgot their dancing and became (as indeed they were) monkeys instead of actors.  Pulling off their masks and tearing their robes, they fought with one another for the nuts.  The dancing spectacle thus came to an end in the laughter and ridicule of the audience.

49. A cock was once strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he noticed something shining in the straw.  “Ho! Ho!” said he, “that’s for me,” and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw.  It turned out to be a pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard.  “You may be a treasure,” signed the cock, “to man, but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn.”

50. An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around hi to give them some parting advice.  He ordered his servants to bring in a bunch of sticks, and said to his eldest son: “Break it.”  The son tried hard, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle.  The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful.  “Untie it,” said the father, “and each of you take a stick.”  When they had done so, he called out to them: “Now, break,” and each stick was easily broken.
