America’s Beauty Is in Its Diversity
? America is built on the idea of freedom, and there is no exception for Muslim women. I ? ? the freedom of religion and speech. But mostly, I believe it’s OK to be? ? ? , and to stand up for who and what you are. So I believe in wearing the hijab.
? The hijab is a religious head covering, like a scarf. I am Muslim, and keeping my head covered is a? ? ? of maturity(成熟)and respect toward my? ? ? and to Allah’s will. ? ? ? , I also like to wear it to be different. I don’t usually like to do what everyone else is doing. I want to be a(n) ? ? ? , not just part of the crowd. But when I first wore it, I was also afraid of the? ? ? that I’d get at school.
? I? ? ? on my own that sixth grade was the? ? ? I should start wearing the hijab. I was ? ? about what the kids would say or even do to me. I thought they might make fun of me, or? ? ? be scared of me and? ? ? my headscarf. Kids at that age usually like to be all the same, and there’s little or no? ? ? of differences.
? On the first day of school, I put all those? ? ? thoughts behind my back and walked in with my head held high. I was holding my breath a little, but? ? ? I was also proud to be a Muslim, proud to be wearing the hijab, proud to be different.
? I was? ? ? about everything I thought the kids would say or even do to me. I actually met a lot of people because of wearing my head covering. Most of the kids would come and ask me questions —? ? ? — about the hijab and why I wore it.
? I did hear some kids were making fun of me, ? ? there was one girl----she wasn’t even in my class, and we never really talked much---and she spoke? ? ? me, and I wasn’t even there! I made a lot of new friends that year, friends that I still have until this very day, five years later.
? Yes, I’m different, but everyone is different here, in one way or another. This is the? ? ? of America.

“This is the emergency room calling and your son was just 36 in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms.We have called for a(n) 37 and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college,so we knew immediately this was 38 .
The doctor described the 39 ,which caused the burns. At 6 am,our son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they 40 the charcoal(木炭),it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline(petrol). The flames 41 my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
42 ,one of the boys was quick-minded,grasped my son,and 43 him on the grass. While it saved his life,it was not in 44 to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars(伤疤).
After he 45 from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery(整容)for 6 months 46 it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling. So,he had to return to college with scars typical of severe burns.
When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch, very 47__ scar on her arm,“Nancy,if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it.It does not mean they will not 48 it,but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.’’
I 49 this wisdom on to my son.He took my advice to 50 and returned to school with his head held high--glad he was alive.
By the end of the six-month waiting period,he decided that the scars did not 51 , sohe made the 52 to give up any plastic surgery.
We all have “scars” that we believe 53 people to keep away from us.And we spend a lot of time thinking that if only we looked different,or dressed differently, people would like us better.
But you see, people will only judge you by your looks,or your clothes,if you are judging yourself by these same 54 standards.Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value 55 yourself, and your beauty will shine through.

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到题后的横线上(请注意题后的词数要求)。
[1]Some people's ears produce wax like busy little bees. This can be a problem even though earwax appears to serve an important purpose. Experts say it protects and cleans the ear. It traps dirt and other matter and keeps insects out. Doctors think it might also help protect against infections. And the waxy oil keeps ears from getting too dry.
[2]So earwax is good. It even has a medical name: cerumen. And there are two kinds. Most people of European or African ancestry have the "wet" kind: thick and sticky. East Asians commonly have ___________.But you can have too much of a good thing.
[3]The glands(腺体) in the ear canal that produce the wax make too much in some people. Earwax normally falls out of the ear or gets washed away. But extra wax can harden and form a blockage that interferes with sound waves and reduces hearing. People can also cause a blockage when they try to clean out their ears, but only push the wax deeper inside. Earwax removal is sometimes necessary. But you have to use a safe method or you could do a lot of damage.
[4]Experts at N.I.H., the National Institutes of Health, suggest some ways to treat excessive earwax yourself. One way to remove wax is known as irrigation. With the head upright, take hold of the outer part of the ear. Gently pull upward to straighten the ear canal. Use an injector device to gently direct water against the wall of the ear canal. Then turn the head to the side to let the water out.
[5]The experts at N.I.H. say you may have to repeat this process a few times. Use water that is body temperature. If the water is cooler or warmer, it could make you feel dizzy. Never try irrigation if the eardrum is broken. It could lead to infection and other problems.
[6]After the earwax is gone, gently dry the ear. But if irrigation fails, the best thing to do is to go to a health care provider for professional assistance.

I devote myself to music because of my grandmother. My mom and I lived with grandparents from the time I was two until I was eight. And even then, I was at their house before and after school every day while my mother was at work.
Grandma loved music. It was her that first _31 me to Elvis Presley as a very young child, and once I heard his music, I was truly in 32 with it. Most five-year-olds ask for 33 for birthdays, but I wanted Elvis’albums. I would play them non-stop and 34 to the music in my grandma’s family room though my movements didn’t look good.
Grandma played the piano and 35 me to sing “America the Beautiful” and “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. I 36 started playing music on the piano, and soon Grandma was paying for me to take piano lessons from a lady living in the 37 . I would come home from __38 and walk three houses down for my lesson. I _39 took about nine months of lessons, but it was enough to give me a(n) 40 and allow me to continue to teach myself.
Last month when I came home to visit Grandma in the hospital, I brought along my guitar with me. She was in a lot of pain, but the music seemed to _41 her soul. She had me sing some songs and when I started to sing “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, her weakened voice 42 in with mine for a few lines. That experience was one of the most 43 of my lifetime and one I will certainly cherish forever. I told her of my music career and she was very _44 and said, “That’s wonderful!” I _45 to play for her throughout the week I was home.
My grandma passed away two days ago. In my opinion, part of her will live on through every song I write or sing in my life.
