Willie Stewart still remembers his first day of kayaking through the grand Canyon. He was getting bounced around in the roughest white water he had ever seen. There was nothing the river threw at him.

There he was in a 40-pound boat, with only a few months of training and one arm. Tied to his left shoulder was a prosthetic limb(假肢)that he’d had for just about a week. The plan was to paddle(划) for 20 days over 227 miles of the roughest white water in the United States. It was one of the most remarkable adventures that the Grand Canyon had ever seen.

It started with a casual phone call in the spring of 2005. A good friend, Mike Crenshaw, finally got a permit from the National Park Service to lead a private party of 16 boaters down the Colorado River that coming August. He had a slot(位置) open for Willie, “Was he interested ?”

“It was the chance of a lifetime,” Stewart said. He had been waiting years for this trip to happen. “How could I refuse ?”

But before they set off, Stewart had a couple of things to take care of. He had to get a white-water kayak, learn how to use it, and get an arm.

For most of his life, the rugged 45-year-old man has lived with only his right arm. He lost his left arm in a horrible accident when he was 18.Stewart was doing a summer construction job in Washington, D.C. The trailing end of rope he was carrying got twisted in an industrial fan. Before he could react, the fan reeled in the rope tight and cut his arm just above the elbow.

He became a bitter young man, angry at the unfairness of what had happened ,and often got into fights. In time, he learned to channel his rage into sports. He joined a rugby team, established a reputation as a fearless player and eventually was elected captain. His days of rage long gone, he found peace and purpose in his life.

  Celebrating sleep

World Sleep Day, observed on 21 March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems worldwide. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common.

In 2002, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Of the people that responded to the survey, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed with insomnia and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia(失眠). In addition, 30.7 percent of survey respondents reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems and 11.6 per cent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.

Overall, the survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also interfere with sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The survey’s findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating. If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase.

There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

THIS movie is about an adventure on an island called Skull, where an oversize gorilla named Kong falls in love with a blonde beauty. Nothing much to expect, you might say .

But you might be wrong.

It has been 72 years since the story was first brought to the screen. But the latest movie version, "King Kong", is a box office hit in the US. The film opens in China on January 14.

Kong himself resonates through American culture: his name known to every 10-year-old boy, his image used to sell everything from insurance to snacks.

So what is it that makes the story attractive to generations of Americans?

Set in the Great Depression of the 1930s, the film follows New York actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), who is kidnapped by movie makers. She was taken to the Skull Island, where she was caught by the aboriginals, who want to sacrifice her to King Kong, a gorilla.

But instead of eating Ann, King Kong saves her. He is captured and dragged back to New York. There he bursts free and climbs the Empire State Building in search of Ann.

Why did King Kong appear in 1933? And why is he back now, in 2005?

In 1933 a worldwide economic depression threw the future into doubt. "The monster represents American workers' feelings at being caged by forces beyond their control," says Gerald Molyneaux, La Salle University film professor and biographer of Charlie Chaplin.

Now, once again, Americans worry about their future in an age of terror, threatened by the presence of "the other" this time by al-Qaida.

But some people, on the other hand, see the movie just as what it is.

"I am confident the story is not any type of social or political allegory," says artist Dave Dorman, creator of the cover illustrations for the new King Kong comic books. "Sometimes an ape is just an ape."
