9.Is there anything we can do about protecting the environment?Let's discuss how to protect it.
Many organizations,at a local, national and international level, devote to protecting the environment.Together they form the"green movement".These groups already enjoy a lot of public support, but their most important work is education.Unless people understand how threats to the environment affect them, they won't know the importance of protecting habitats.
Many farmers support the"green movement".Some make an effort to protect small areas of wood lands and are careful not to spray these areas with pesticide.A few have turned their backs on modern methods and use no chemicals at all.
Farming without chemicals is known as organic farming. In several countries, organic products have become very popular.Because no chemicals are used to grow the food, there are none to enter the human food chain.By choosing organic products, people think they are also choosing to save the countryside.
In the developing countries, action is finally being taken to save the rain forests by the governments. In Africa, the Ivory Coast recently banned all timer exports. In central America, the government of Panama made it illegal to cut down trees which are more than five years old.Such actions show great determination because timer exports have been a major source of income.
It is difficult to persuade poor people in developing countries of the importance of saving forests. They need more food and want to use farmland to grow it on.What we risk losing is not only the enjoyment of nature, but also the contribution of life on this planet.

One weekend the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmate and would return late.As this was the first time,her mother agreed,but she couldn't help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before.The mother waited till nine and decided to go out to meet her daughter.Just at that moment the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and there was her daughter,waving goodbye to a boy.Her heart missed a beat.When the girl came in,the mother was watching TV,pretending nothing had happened."Mom,I'm back.""Yeah.""Sorry to be late.Still sitting up?""Yes,oh,that…who's that boy?"The daughter was silent for a moment."Ah.It's my monitor.He gave me a lift on his way home.Mom,I'm going to bed.""All right.Go to sleep early."
Next morning when the mother went to the daughter's room to do some cleaning,she found her diary left at her pillow.Finally she opened it.It read:Mom,it's love that made you ask,but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn't.

3.Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city?In order to answer this question,we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area.Not all historical buildings are attractive.However,there may be other reasons-for example,economic reasons-why they should be preserved.So,let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people.What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view,new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style.Indeed,there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have ben placed very successfully next to old buildings.As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much,it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in,but the same can be said of some old buildings too.Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas.I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings,I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward.If we always reproduced what was thre before,we would all still be living in caves.Thus,I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different,even though that might be the more risky choice.
28.What does the author say about historical buildings in th first paragraph?D
A.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
B.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
C.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
D.Some of them are not attractive.
29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?A
A.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
B.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
C.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.

B.put things in a different place
C.choose new architectural style

A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
C.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
D.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
7.What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are feeling sad or depressed?You probably pat them on the back or shoulder,or maybe you give them a big,warm hug.
We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have.But scientists have discovered that apes(猩猩)have this ability,too,according to a study published in the Journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta,US,went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos(倭黑猩猩),which are closely related to humans.
The researchers analyzed the bonobos'reactions after more than 370cases of stressful situations,such as fights and losing temper,and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked,just like humans would have done.
However,researchers noted that not all bonobos were capable of comforting others.In the protection centre,many bonobos are orphans whose mothers were killed by hunters.They were found to be more anxious in times of tension and to have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions,making them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.
"Orphans,who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions,are much worse at comforting others,"Professor Frans de Waal,one of the researchers,told The Telegraph."Bonobos with moms were able to curb their negative emotional reactions more quickly.Therefore,they pay more attention to others."
This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react.Those who seem more capable of handling their own emotions-for example,the ones who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences-are usually better at expressing their concerns for others.
