Today before you think of saying an unkind word, think of someone who can't speak. Before
you complain about the taste of your food, think of someone who has nothing to eat. Before you
complain about your husband or wife, think of someone who's crying out to God for a companion.
Today before complain about life, think of someone who went too early to heaven. Before you
complain about your children, think of someone who desires children but they're unable to be pregnant.
Before you argue about your dirty house or someone didn't clean or sweep, think of the people who
are living in the streets. Before whining about the distance you drive, think of someone who walks the
same distance with their feet.
And when you are tired and complain about your job, think of the unemployed, the disabled and
those who wished they had your job. But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning
another, remember that not one of us is without sin and we all answer to one maker. And when
depressing thoughts seem to get you down, put a smile on your face and thank God you're alive
and still around.
Life is a gift. Love it. Enjoy it. Celebrate it. And fulfill it and most of all love it!

The writer tells us that everyone should love life and be tolerant, warning us to be positive and
not to complain too much.
Many people around me focus on what they want instead of what they have. They just keep
expanding their list of desires, which guarantees they remain dissatisfied.
One of my friends, Li Hua, leads a rich life. His parents are busy in operating two international
factories, which makes his classmates envy him. However, he feels unhappy because he thinks he
is lack of love and care from his parents.
In my opinion, we should think more about what we have. For Li Hua, he should understand his
parents how busy they are with their work. If they don't work or stay at home with him the whole
day, can he still get what he wants and leads a rich life? What's more, his parents work hard in order
to create a better condition for him. So he should be grateful for what he has rather than complaining
about it. Thus he'll feel satisfied and happy.

                                        The elephant and the fly
A disciple(信徒), who was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest, asked his
teacher, "Why are most people’s minds restless? What can one do to still the mind?” The teacher
looked at the disciple, smiled and told him a story:
An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing
(嗡嗡叫) near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and
the elephant waved it away once more.
This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and
noisy? Why can’t you stay for a while in one place? ”
The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constantly
in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?”
The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I
get immersed in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating. In this way I can enjoy
my food and chew it better. I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around.”
Upon hearing these words, a smile appeared on the disciple’s face, “I understand! If my five senses
are in control of my mind and attention, then my mind is in constant unrest. If I am in charge of my five
senses and attention, then my mind becomes calm.”

The arrival of World Book and Copyright Day always draws public attention to young people's
reading, but mere temporary attention cannot increase the popularity of reading. The lack of reading
books is becoming an increasingly severe problem in China.
According to a survey by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO), Shanghai residents read most in China, with only eight books read a year on average.
About 1.3 billion Chinese people read less than one book every year, if textbooks are not taken into
account.
Nowadays, children's spare time is occupied by attending various tutorial classes, taking exam
preparation training, and learning piano, painting, dancing, weiqi, or other techniques.
"Childhood is a good period for reading literature. Reading can wake up the true nature of children,
and good education should fit children's nature," said Zhou Yimin, who is also a teacher.
Scholars are also worried about another adverse impact of the lack of reading. "If a child had never
read a book from beginning to end before the fourth grade, he or she may lack the ability to read an
entire book," said Jiang Junjing, an experienced teacher. What is worse, it may result in a lack of the
ability to grasp the whole situation. Children who lacked the ability to read an entire book in childhood
may end up being unable to grasp the whole picture or manage the whole team when they grow up.

Recently I entered one office of our company, seeing a co-worker( 同事) head on his arms.
She was really upset. We began talking about work issues and the topic quickly turned into her
daughter, her mother, her husband and her personal life. I just sat and gave her my full attention.
This went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, a smile came to her face and she said, "Why is it that
I can always talk to you?" What I know is that I gave her my full attention and listened.
Listening is an important part of helping someone. It is different from hearing. Most people can
hear but listening is a learned skill. You have to stop thinking about yourself and put your attention
on the person talking. I believe if you really listen to one another, many situations could be changed.
It means you give another person the chance to have him heard. To me, this is an important way to
help others and it does make a difference.
