       Climate change, pollution, overuse of water and development are killing some of the world’s most famous rivers including China’s Yangtze, India’s Ganges and African’s Nile, WWF said on Tuesday. At the global launch of its report “World’s Top 10 Rivers at Risk”, the group said many rivers could dry out, affecting hundreds of millions of people and killing unique aquatic life.

       “If these rivers die, millions will lose their livelihoods, biodiversity will be destroyed on a massive scale, there will be less fresh water and agriculture, resulting in less food security,” said Rayi Singh, secretarygeneral of WWF-India. The report launched ahead of “World Water Day” today, also cited the Rio Grande in the United States, the Mekong and Indus in Asia, Europe’s Danube, La Plata in South America and Australia’s Murray-Darling as in need of greater protection.

       Rivers are the world’s main source of fresh water and WWF says about half of the available supply is already being used up. Dams have destroyed habitats and cut rivers off from their flood plains while climate change could affect the seasonal water flows that feed them, the report said. Fish populations, the top source of protein and overall life support for hundreds of thousands of communities worldwide, are also being threatened, it found… The Yangtze basin is one of the most polluted rivers in the world because of decades of heavy industrialization, damming and huge influxes of sediment from land conversion.

       Climate change, including higher temperatures, also means serious consequences for fishery productivity, water supply and political security in Africa’s arid Nile basin. Tributaries flowing into the Ganges are drying up because of irrigation, WWF said.

       People living in the UK take quite a few holidays abroad and in this country each year. Choices made about where to go, how to get there and what to do while there can either benefit or harm the environment.

While on holiday

       Many of the things you can do to be greener on holiday will be the same things you can do at home—but there are also some extra things too, like avoiding gifts made from endangered plants and animals. Here are some suggestions:

       ●Making the most of locally produced food and drink, and local activities and attractions will support people in the area you are visiting and reduce the need for further environmental influence from transport;

       ●Switching off any air conditioning, heating and lights will help reduce climate change effect;

       ●Save water—some countries suffer from water shortages and saving water can help avoid damage to our natural habitats.

Endangered species

       Some gifts and foods available in some countries can be made from endangered plants or animals. Check before you buy, but if in doubt, avoid animal and plant gifts. More details of the types of products to avoid and illegal trade hotspots can be found on the Souvenir Alert webpage.

Making a positive contribution to the place you are visiting

       There are ways in which your holiday can help support local people and the environment;

       ●There are many opportunities to volunteer and help with projects that conserve and improve natural habitats;

       ●When you are away, or if you are looking for somewhere to visit, you can support projects or attractions which protect wildlife, such as nature reserves and conservation projects.

Canada is a very large country. It is the second largest country in the world. By contrast it has a very small population. There are slightly over 30 million people there. Most Canadians are of British or French origin, and French is an official language of Canada as well as English. About 45% of the people are of British origin, that is, they or their parents or grandparents, etc., come from Britain. Nearly 30% are of French origin. Most of the French-Canadians live in the province of Quebec.

Over the years, people have come to live in Canada from many countries in the world. They are from most European countries and also from China, besides other Asian countries.

However, Canada was not an empty country when the Europeans began to arrive. Canadian Indians lived along the coast, by the rivers and lakes and in forests. Today there are only about 350 000 Indians in the whole country, with their own languages. In the far north live the Inuit. There are only 27 000 Canadian-Inuit.      Climate scientists hit back at disbelievers yesterday with a new study which brought about the evidence
for man-made global war ming was"stronger than ever".
     After analyzing more than 100 scientific papers published in the last few years, a team of British
researchers say there is an"in creasingly small possibility" that the world is warming up because of natural
variations (变动) in climate.
     Instead, man-made global warming-caused by the burning of fossil fuels-is making its mark on every
continent and ocean, they say.
     The studies used computer models to see whether changes in air temperature, sea ice, sea temperature,
wetness, rainfall and ocean saltiness recorded in the last 50 years could be explained by nature.
     Since 1980,the average global temperature has increased by around0.5℃,they found. The same warming
pattern was also found deep in the world's oceans.
     Natural forces such as volcanic eruptions and returning chan ges in the brightness of the sun could not
explain what was happen- ing to the world's climate, Dr Stott said.
     The sun's output had actually fallen over the last 50 years, he said.
     Even if the sun had got warmer over the last few decades-as some skeptics say-both the upper and lower
layers of the atmos phere should have got hotter.
     However, in the last 50 years the lower atmosphere has warmed while the upper atmosphere has actually
cooled, Dr Stott said.
     Drier parts of the world are getting drier, while wetter areas are getting more rain-a finding in agreement
with man-made climate change, the report found.
     And the amount of mid summer sea ice in the Arctic is also declining over time-even with the natural
yearly variations, the study found.
     The study comes along with growing public doubt about climate change.
1. With enough evidence the climate scientists prove _____.
A. global warming is disappearing recently
B. mankind isn't to blame for global warming
C. mankind is to blame for global warming
D. global warming will disappear sooner or later
2. What caused the global warming according to the British researchers?
A. Frequent volcanic eruptions across the world.
B. The increase of the brightness of the sun.
C. The warming pattern of the world's oceans.
D. The burning of fossil fuels by the human being.
3. The underlined word "skeptics" in Paragraph 8 refers these people who_____.
A. believe that mankind is to blame for global warming
B. believe global warming will disappear sooner or later
C. doubt the global warming will disappear sooner or later
D. doubt the global warming is caused by humankind
4. What can we infer from the last sentence of the passage?
A. The study has made the public live in a terrible dream at present.
B. Many people don't believe the study of the British researchers now.
C. The public have been used to the climate changes these years.
D. The result of the study comes from the opinions of the public.
