题目内容
Gates, William Henry Ⅲ, is the American business executive(管理人员)who serves as chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Microsoft Corporation, the leading computer software(软件)company in the United States. Gates founded Microsoft in 1975 together with his high school friend Paul Allen. The company's success made Gates one of the most successful figures in the computer industry and, at last the richest person in the world.
Born in Seattle, Washington, Gates attended public school through the sixth grade. In the seventh grade he entered Seattle's exclusive Lakeside School, where he met Paul Allen. Gates was first introduced to computers and programming languages in 1968, when he was in the eight grade. That year Lakeside bought a teletype(电传打字)machine that connected to a main computer over phone lines. At that time, the school was one of the few that provided students with access(连接)to a computer.
Soon afterwards, Gates, Allen, and other students persuaded a local computer company to give them free access to its PDP--10, a new mini-computer made by Digital Equipment Corporation. In exchange for the computer time, the students tried to find flaws(缺陷)in the system. Gates spent much of his free time on the PDP--10, learning programming languages such as BASIC, FORTRAN, and LISP, In 1972 Gates and Allen founded Traf--0-- Data, a company that designed and built computerized car--counting machines for traffic analysis(分析). The project served to introduce them to programmable 8006 microprocessor(微处理器)from Intel Corporation.

解析:
(1) 此题是分析理解题。文章中没有对exclusive school进行具体解释,但我们可从字里行间发现信息。第二段提到exclusive Lakeside School后,指出该学校bought a teletype ma-- chine,并且加以说明“At that time, the school was one of the few that provided students with access to a computer.”足见此学校是设备先进,资金雄厚。A、B均没有体现此意,D项表述不合情理,不含此意。故只有C正确。(2) 纵观全文可知,盖茨先是在Lakeside School首次了解了电脑及程序语言,后又到本地一家电脑公司使用微型计算机,进而进一步学习了程序语言,并在此基础上创立了Traf -- 0-- Data,最终在另一家公司“got to know 8006 microprocessor for the first time”.(3) 首先由词语Traf-- 0--Data的构成,可缩小了判断范围,然后由“a company that... for traffic analysis”可做出判断。 |
A man named Smith was sitting on his roof during a flood, and the water was up to his feet. Before long a fellow in a canoe passed and shouted, "Can I give you a lift to higher ground?"
"No, thanks," said Smith. "I have faith (信任)in God and he will save me."
Soon the water rose to Smith’s waist.(腰,腰部) At this point a motor boat pulled up and someone called out, "Can I give you a lift to higher ground?"
"No, thanks, I have faith in God and he will save me."

"No, thanks," said Smith. "I have faith in God and he will save me. "But after hours of struggling with water, poor exhausted Smith drowned and went to his reward. As he arrived at the Pearly Gates, Smith met God and complained about this. "Tell me, God, "he said, "I had such faith in you to save me and you let me drown. What happened?"
