The 42,503 Chinese students studying in the United States are enrolled (注册入学) in 994 different universities. The University of Houston in Texas, with 474 students, or more than 1 percent of the total, has the largest number of Chinese students of any US university. One hundred and eighteen universities and colleges have more than 100 Chinese, and the average number of students per university is around 40.
Twenty-three per cent of Chinese students are concentrated at the 20 most popular universities. Compared with other Asian countries and regions, Chinese students are quite well dispersed (发布). Only Japan has a lower percentage of students in the top 20 universities.
Now York States is the most popular with 3,524 Chinese students (10 per cent). States following in order of popularity with Chinese are, California, Texas, Ohio, and Ⅱ linois, Thirty-eight percent of the Chinese students enrolled in US institutions are concentrated in these five states.
Seventy-seven per cent of all Chinese are studying at the graduate level. Eleven per cent are enrolled in undergraduate programs while 4 per cent are listed as non-degree of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.
