13.A Sweet FindIt was nearly(56)impossible(possible)to get my seven-old granddaughter,Madison, out the door for school. She didn't want to get out of bed.She didn't like the shirt(57)picked (pick)out for her.The uniform skirt didn't feel good.By the time I got her into the car,she was on the point of crying."Madison,"I said."I know you're tired, but try to put(58)a  smile on your face.Remember how much fun we had at Disneyland?"
Maybe it was too much fun.For Madison's birthday,we'd taken her and her best friend to Disneyland. The girls had a good time.They(59)rode (ride) every ride of their choice. We got home well after her usual bedtime, but I wasn't expecting Madison's dramatic performance the following morning.I thought she'd be happy to share the magical time at Disneyland, but instead she sat in the back seat,(60)sobbing (sob).
I tried to hold back my(61)anger  (angry).I took a deep breath and tried to reason with her.Nothing worked.I was tired too,(62)and   I hadn't had my breakfast yet.
Suddenly the crying stopped and Madison screamed.Unwillingly,I glanced back.
"Grandma!Look at(63)whatI found!"she shouted.
Madison held it up for me(64)to see   (see).A little oink candy heart with red lettering. It must have been a gift from her school's Valentine's Day party."What does it say?"I asked.
"Smile!"she said.
Madison put the candy(65)into  her mouth and we both did exactly that.

She didn't want to get out of bed
57.picked.
58.a. 表示面带微笑用 put(58)a  smile on your face.
59.rode.
60.sobbing. 动词sob做 she sat in the back seat的伴随状语,和主语she之间是主动关系,用现在分词sobbing.
61.anger.
62.and. I hadn't had my breakfast  表示"我没有吃饭",和上句是并列关系,所以用and连接.
63.what. 引导宾语从句,做从句I found的宾语,用what.
64.to see. Madison held it up for me 的目的状语用动词不定式to see.
65.into.

Walking on the street,I saw an old friend.-

A certain survey was conducted to ask students to name the school subject that was (41)E as the most difficult.Not surprisingly,mathematics came out on top of the difficulty chart.So what is it about math that makes it difficult?
In dictionaries the word"difficult"is (42)C as"not easily or readily done; requiring much labor or planning to be performed successfully."This definition gets to the point of the problem when it comes to math.What makes math difficult is that it takes patience and (43)G.For many students,math is not something that comes automatically.It takes effort.It is a subject that sometimes requires students to (44)A lots and lots of time and energy.
This means,for many,the problem has little to do with brain power; it is mostly a matter of staying power.And since students don't make their own timelines,they can run out of the time as the teacher moves on the next topic.
Scientists believe that people (45)I different math understanding sills.Logical and left-brain thinkers tend to understand things in a different way in which intuitive and right-brainers do.They (46)H a lot of information at one time and allow time to let it"sink in".So left-brain students may grasp concepts quickly while right-brain students don't.To those right brain student,time loss can make them feel (47)J and behind.Unfortunately in busy classrooms with too many students,students are not always blessed with enough time.We have to move on,ready or not.
Math know-how is also snowballing,which means it works much like a pile of building blocks.You have to gain enough blocks in one area before you can effectively go on to"build upon"another area.Our first mathematical building blocks are established in primary school,when we learn rules and (48)B for addition and multiplication,and those first concepts become our (49)D.These mathematical concepts or knowledge has to sink in and become firm before students can move on to challenge the next stage of new concepts.However,teachers don't have time to ensure that every single student understands every single concept.So some students move to the next level with really shaky knowledge system.As a result,as they climb the ladder,they may meet with more and more difficulties and might (50)F painful failures at some point.

8."Annabel,I think there is a bear in our house,"I shouted up the stair.She didn't hear me properly."There is a what?"she shouted back."You've found a chair in the house?"I cleared my throat and said again,as calmly as possible,"I think there is a bear in the house."If there is a world speed record for repacking a backpack and leaving a building,Annabel must be a competitor,for we were outside the building within seconds.
Annabel and I had already spent three days walking 80 kilometers over the mountains from the Pacific.We were in Canada's Yukon Territory,heading towards Car cross,on the shore of Lake Bennett.Here our boat was waiting where we had left it the week before.Our plan then was to boat down the 3,000kilometers of Yukon River to the Bering Sea.
On this day,we were walking the last 48kilometers towards Car cross,following a disused railway line.You had to keep an eye out for black bears,whose presence was obvious from the huge piles of dung(粪便)that littered the tracks.
As the day drew on,we started to look for somewhere to sleep.We finally found an old railway building,which looked as if it might keep us safe from bears.Though the windows and doors had large scratch and chew marks,they were covered with boards and looked safe.Annabel went upstairs and started to unpack and settle in while I looked around downstairs.
I was moving around in what was once clearly a kitchen,when,from out of a darkened doorway that I took to the storeroom,came a soft but unusual deep moan(呻吟).My curiosity raised,I started to walk towards the slightly opne door.I was halfway across the room when a low rough sound came out of the darkness and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.My natural ability was to ruin.I backed out of the room,my eyes staring at the dark doorway.We thought it might be a better idea to spend the night elsewhere.
We got up early in our small tent in the morning.The night's sleep had been all right except when a little troubled by dreams of bears.But our mood rose with the sun.We were walking along,relaxing with each step and looking forward to a big lunch at Car cross.
Crossing a small wooden bridge,we left the rail tracks to have a drink.As we returned,Annabel cried out"Stop!"Looking up,I saw a familiar black shape behind us:another black bear was following us,moving up slowly from behind,and then disappearing rapidly into the trees when we turned to face it.How long it had been following us,we could not say.

25.What can you know from the first paragraph?D

2.You might notice something new in the next few years as you watch Disney programs:Starting in 2016,there won't be any candy,sugary cereal or fast-food commercials (广告)aimed at kids.
The Walt Disney Company has become the first major media company to ban(禁止)ads for junk food on its TV channels,radio stations and websites.It hopes this will stop kids from making poor food choices.First Lady Michelle Obama called it a"game changer"that is sure to send a message to the rest of the children's entertainment industry."Just a few years ago,if you had told me or any other mom or dad in America that our kids wouldn't see a single ad for junk food while they watched their favorite cartoons on a major TV network,we wouldn't have believed you,"said the First Lady,who heads a campaign to help stop child obesity (肥胖).
The ban would apply to Disney-owned ABC stations as well as Radio Disney and Disney-owned websites aimed at families with young children.In addition,Disney plans to make changes to its kids'menus at theme parks and resorts (度假胜地).Fast-food options will be replaced with healthier choices,such as smoothies (果汁),apples,vegetables and yogurt.
In addition to candy bars and fast-food meals,other foods that don't meet Disney's nutritional standards will be banned from the company's kid-targeted media.Any cereal with 10 grams or more of sugar per serving will be off the air.There will be no ads for full meals of more than 600 calories.Juices with high levels of sugar and foods with too much salt will also be pulled.
Leslie Goodman,Disney's senior vice-president of Corporate Citizenship,said a company that wants to advertise will need to show that it offers a range of healthy options.
Disney isn't the only one pushing away unhealthy foods.Last week,New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested a ban on drinks over 16ounces sold in movie theaters,restaurants and convenience stores in the Big Apple.He says large,sugary drinks are partly to blame for obesity.

3.Starting the day on an egg could keep your blood pressure under control,research suggests.Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood pressure-lowering drugs.
The research, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes (酶) they produce a protein that acts in the same way as Ace inhibitors, but more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.
Earlier this month,British researchers declared that,contrary to popular beliefs,it is healthy to go to work on an egg.They concluded that the type of cholesterol (胆固醇) found in eggs has little effect on increasing heart disease risks.
Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin,from the University of Surrey,said,"The wrong beliefs linking egg eating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected.The amount of fat in our diet has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amounts of cholesterol found in eggs.The UK public do not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat.They can be encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature's most nutritious foods."
The British Heart Foundation dropped its three-egg-a-week limit in 2005.However,almost half of Britons believe the limit still applies.
