Paper-cutting is a very typical visual art of Chinese handicrafts(手工艺品).It originated from the 6th century when women used to paste the silver cuttings onto their hair.Later, they were used during festivals to decorate gates and windows. After hundreds of years'development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country people, especially women.

The main cutting tools are simple:paper and scissors or a cutting knife, but clever and skillful craftspeople are really good at cutting in the theme of daily life. When you look at items made in this method carefully, you will be amazed by the true expressions of the figure's, emotion and appearance, or natural plants and animals'diverse gestures.Patterns of flowers display the beautiful petals(花瓣), pied magpies show their tiny feathers, and others such as a married daughter returning to her parents'home, or young people paying a New Year call to their grandparents.

It is easy to learn about cutting a piece of paper, but very difficult to master it with perfection. One must grasp the knife in an upright fashion and press steadily on the paper with some strength.Flexibility is required but any hesitation or wiggling will lead to imprecision or damage the whole cutting.Cutters stress the cutting lines in several styles. They attempt to carve a circle like the moon, a straight line like a stem of wheat, a square like a brick, and jaggedly like the beard.

People find hope and comfort in expressing wishes with paper cuttings. For example:for a wedding ceremony, red paper cuttings are a traditional and required decoration on the tea set, the dressing table glass, and on other furniture.A big red paper character 'Xi'(happiness)is a traditional must on the newlywed's door.Upon the birthday party of a senior, the character 'Shou'represents long life and will add delight to the whole celebration; while a pattern of chubby(胖乎乎的)children holding fish signifies that every year they will be rich in wealth.

A.FROM a skyline featuring both minarets(尖塔) and church spires to the call to prayer competing with music in a hip cafe, Istanbul is the only major city to span two continents. While it is known for sights dating back thousands of years, it also has a fascinating, and often ignored, modern scene that is finally receiving international attention. As a 2010 European Capital of Culture, the city is showcasing local artists in both historic areas and new museums — yet another example of how Istanbul is among the world’s most visually exciting cities.

B.WUHOU temple and surrounding areas are interesting and fun to walk through. It's worth spending time in a tea house, perhaps one in Renmin Park, because Chengdu's tea culture is worth experiencing. Chun Xi Lu, with its fluorescent lights and frenetic shoppers, is a good place to see the more modern China, especially at night. But the real attraction in Chengdu, and in Sichuan in general, is often the food. The hotpot, while not as spicy as in Chongqing, is worth trying. It is the same with chao shou, or dumplings. Maybe you should head over to the restaurant section right now.

C.SUNNY, fashion-forward, Sydney is an energetic city bent on making its mark. Sydney in particular is graced with wonderful weather most of the year.     D. THERE are many different Londons, and they appeal to people with many different passions: museum lovers, theatergoers, devotees of royalty, people who like to walk in the rain. But richest of all, perhaps, is the London for book lovers.Skip to next paragraph Because the city is the star and the backdrop of so much great literature, it is possible to believe you know it intimately(亲切的)— how it looks, how it feels — without ever leaving your home country, or indeed your home. But it is better to visit, if only for the joy of seeing the landscape of your imagination come to life. How thrilling it is to wander along Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes once fictionally solved the unsolvable!

    E. CAIRO is third world and first world, Islamic world, a city that jars all the senses, all at once. There are thousands of years of history in this city of 18 million people, and that history can be seen in the people themselves: the seller peddling his beans from a decorated cart, the felucca (a traditional wooden sailing boat) captain guiding his sailboat through the murky Nile, the young man riding a bicycle through traffic with a ladder-sized tray of bread balanced on his head. Come prepared: a scarf for women to enter mosques; packets of tissues for bathroom stops; small bills for tips; and if you like to drink, a bottle or two of wine from the duty-free airport shop. Cairo has a lot to offer, but a good bottle of wine is not included.

    F. MANY districts and landmarks in New York have become well- known to outsiders. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Anchored by Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, New York vies with London as the financial capital of the world and is home to the New York Stock Exchange, the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies. The original Manhattan Chinatown attracts a flood of tourists to its busy sidewalks and retail establishments.

A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家)

Dear Mr Expert:

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always Promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine ― so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can shou up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes― it makes the place feel comfortable and warm― but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?

Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan

Dear Joan:

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathesed yourfriends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛),you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with― or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

The disadvantage you usually find about MP3 players like the iPod is that they are too big. But get ready for the MP3 player in your hand to get much smaller—the size of a Band-Aid (创可贴).

It’s called the Skinny Player, and it’s being designed by industrial designers Chih-Wei Wang and Shou-His Fu. Unlike the current types of iPod Shuffles and iPod Nanos, the Skinny Player does not need to be fixed onto your clothes or put into your pocket. It could stick to your skin(皮肤) like you would attach a Band-Aid. But unlike Band-Aids, this tiny MP3 player will not lose its stickiness as you pull it off for the hundredth time.

The Skinny Player features flexible speakers allowing the user to enjoy music conveniently. When it gets dirty, the user can simply clean it using a damp cloth. No batteries either. The Skinny Player’s designers say it will be powered by body heat, using a flexible battery charging device (充电器) that is in contact with skin whenever the player is being used.

The design only include an on/off button and flexible speakers, no word yet on arranging the volume. Besides, the memory capacity(储存容量) won’t be the best, as it is designed to only store one album.

The small size and the ability to stick it onto your skin like a Band-Aid should make the Skinny Player perfect for runners who now depend on their iPod to keep them energized on the running path.

  A.       easy to clean                                             B. convenient to carry

  C. smaller in size                                           D. larger in memory capacity

63. Paragraph 4 tells that the Skinny Player _____.

  A. also has other advantages                          B. still has its disadvantages

  C. is easier to operate                                    D. is harder to operate

64. According to the writer, the Skinny Player will be especially popular among the _____.

  A. runners                 B. drivers                            C. students            D. speakers

65. The best title for this passage can be _____.

  A. Ipod—out of date MP3 player                    B. Ipod—out of date mobile phone
