Mary’s parents are different from the average. While she was growing up they required her to 21. First of all she had to work around their home. Later on Mary worked for other people.
When Mary was 14 years old, her mother and father told her that they were no 22 going to buy her clothes. Sure, they would continue to buy shoes for her and also the special clothes like suits, but 23 else was her responsibility. Some people thought that they were 24, but they wanted to teach Mary some 25 lessons. One thing she learned was that nothing is cheap or 26. She learned how to deal with her money carefully. Another thing she learned was 27 to keep from wearing out(穿破)her clothes too fast.
Also, even 28 Mary went to school she was 29 to work. All through her high school and 30 years she worked as well as studied. Mary’s parents had plenty of 31 but they felt she would 32 her education more if she had to 33 it. And strange as it may seem, they had heard that students who worked part- time generally got 34 grades than students who did no work.
Now Mary is a mother herself. She requires her children to do the same 35 she did, especially working part- time as they go to school.

Neighbors rescued a woman from her burning home early Monday morning, and three firefighters were hurt putting out the flames in Green Bay.

The fire was discovered around 4 o'clock at a three-story home in the South Quincy Street on the city's east side. Investigators(调查者) say 68-year-old Mary Taylor lives there with her two dogs.

“I got out of bed and went to the front window and could hear somebody was yelling(叫喊),‘Fire!’” Curt Dworak said. When he realized what was happening, he threw on some clothes and ran to help. “I was just hoping Mary wasn't in there, but her car was in the driveway,so I just reacted,” he said, “I just broke the glass and then went in through the window.”

Dworak yelled for Mary but got no response. As he searched, the fire grew and debris(碎片) started falling around him. I didn't know what to do. I yelled for her a couple more times, and then I heard her. Disoriented(分不清方向的)and unable to move, Mary was sprawling(趴) on the floor in the back of her house,so Dworak picked her up and carried her to safety.

Dworak, who has been hailed as a hero by Green Bay Fire Department but shrugged of the praise, said,“They would have done the same thing. Mary is a nice lady, and how could you live with yourself if you didn't do something like that?”

Mary was up and talking before she was taken to the hospital to be checked out. Dworak escaped without a thin cut.

Do you ever run out of great books to read? So what should I read next? Is fast-paced crime fiction your thing?

Try the new Patricia Cornwell book, Scarpetta (Putnam). She is such an able writer and handles complex forensic(法庭的) intelligence with ease. You need to be prepared, though, for the world you're entering—this isn't for the faint of heart, let's say.

If peace is more your thing, try Mary Pipher's wonderful new book, Seeking Peace: Chronicles of the Worst Buddhist in the World (Riverhead). Mary is a lovely, comfortable writer who takes the reader through her personal awakening after reputation and fortune came her way. Even if you've never experienced life as a bestselling writer (as she has done, in her book years back, Reviving Ophelia), you'll totally understand and sympathize with her renewed need for privacy, distance and quiet.

What if you want a straightforward, totally thrilling read with vivid characters, set about World War II? You cannot go wrong with Jim Lehrer's new novel, Oh, Johnny (Random House), about a young Marine whose life is changed forever when he meets a woman on his way to war. His relationship with her lasts him through danger and hardship, and there's an impressive ending. See our interview with the productive novelist/newsman in the current issue of Reader's Digest (March, on stands now), by the way, for insight into the very talented Mr. Lehrer and what interests him.

Well, what about something wickedly funny and totally offbeat? Does the name Carrie Fisher do anything for you? Try her vivid and new life in Hollywood and elsewhere, Wishful Drinking (Simon & Schuster). Be prepared for humor as sharp as knives.
