It was a high cliff (悬崖). Tom had been climbing for a long time. He was getting tired. Suddenly a piece of rock broke off his fingers. He almost fell.
He looked down and again almost fell. The ground was far below him. He looked up. It was still a long way to the top. He let his foot feel around below, but there was nothing there. He couldn't find the rock where his foot had been.“I'm going to fall,”he said aloud. His voice sounded frightened. Behind and below him ,quite near , a girl's voice spoke.
“Hold on hold on and I'll help you ,”she said.
Tom was afraid to look down again.
“Where did you come from?”he asked.
“I saw you were in trouble , so I came to help” she answered.
Her voice was closer. She must be just below me , Tom thought.
“If I fall, I'll hit you,”he said, “and you will fall too. You'd better go back. There is no way down from here. ”
“I know,”the girl said,“you have to keep going up. See that crack(裂缝) in the rock a long arm's reach? Take your time , but reach for it”.
Tom reached and found the crack. His fingers gripped it.
“Now move your right foot up,”the girl said.“you will feel a place for your toes. Don't look back just keep going up. ”
Tom moved up slowly , carefully.
“Now reach for those tree roots that are coming through above you,” the girl said. Tom reached and gripped them. And slowly, with the girl telling him where to put his hands and feet, Tom climbed. At last he made it. One strong pull , and he was over the top. He fell facedown on the grass , his eyes shut , too tired to move.
“Thank you , ”he said. “You saved me. This is a dangerous climb. I shouldn't have tried it. A girl fell from here last year. She was killed.”
“Yes,”the girl's voice said, “I was killed.” It sounded far away.
Tom jumped to his feet , suddenly cold , his eyes wide.
There was no one there no one at all.
